That giant sponge filter made me crack up!! 🤣 I think filtration is a topic that will always be one that needes to be discussed. There are so many different options, and not one of them is the "best". What is the "best" for me may not be for you. That's why this hobby is so freakin cool!! We can all take from eachother and become better fishkeepers.

In my experience, ease of maintenance is one of the most important things to consider when deciding what filter to go with for your particular setup. I have a Fluval Flex with the built in filtration compartments, and I bought some media baskets for the compartments that allows me to stage the filtration media properly, but more importantly it makes it really easy for me to pull all of it out during water changes to rinse and clean. I can also easily siphon out all the built up waste inside the filter compartments while I'm at it. I can have everything clean in about 15 minutes. If I'm gonna have multiple tanks, I need the maintenance to be as simple and straight forward as possible.

I don't have multiple tanks just 1- 75 gal aquarium that I admire keeping clean & functional, I also don't have a multiple load of fish in it either just a bunch of plant's. I DO HAVE a non brand canister filter rated for a 75 gal but it doesn't seem like it's strong enough to have a good flow to keep things off the substrate & it just accumulates. "I need the maintenance to be as simple and straight forward as possible." which is what I'm looking for not to mention easy so I'm looking to hang 2 hob's on the aquarium along with the canister filter to see if THAT will help with keeping it cleaner. The 2 hob's are rated for 100 gal tanks so with the canister filter & 2 hob's that should help keep the tank a lot cleaner + I might add a bubble bar to see if that doesn't work for me.

Guys just speaking from a few years of experience and I want to say do not underestimate how much live plants are as a filter. I have a koi pond and 3 indoor tanks and I have a sponge filter in a tank, a huge canister filter in another, a hang on the back filter, and a tank with strictly just plants and a pump to circulate water. And I have noticed for my bio load the plant filters work much better than anything you can buy.

Fish load is absolutely what determines the amount of media you need. Gallons in the tank doesn't matter. My rule of thumb for how much filtration I need is how quickly my glass gets that bio film haze. That haze that clouds your glass. Not to be mistaken by algae. That's not what I'm talking about. If my glass needs to have the haze cleaned off once a week, or once every two weeks in my opinion I don't have nearly enough. In my aquariums I have enough media that I only need to clean the glass every month and a half to two months. For me that's when I feel I've got enough. This doesn't mean gph either. You can have overkill on gph while not having enough media simultaneously. For example I have a 125 gallon tank with several very large African Cichlids in it. It has 2 fx6, 1 sunsun 304b, an xpertmatic internal filter, and a large sponge filter. This is way overkill in gph but with that much media my glass stays clean and the bacteria in my filters not the nitrifying bacteria get to break down the waste as quickly as its made. I've been waiting months for one of them to get dirty enough to clean for a video but it never happens. If I had a filter large enough to hold all the media I have going in it. I'd just run one filter. The xpertmatic internal filter I don't use for biological filtration. I clean it weekly. I only use it to remove waste from the tank but mainly aeration. The large sponge filter I only keep in there to seed new aquariums. I keep a few in different tanks strictly for this purpose. People in this hobby have this idea in their head that an aquarium only grows enough bacteria to "cycle" a tank. Which simply isn't true. An aquarium will grow far more nitrifying bacteria than needed to "cycle" the tank. Is there a limit to how much it will grow I'm sure there is but it far exceeds the amount needed to keep ammonia and nitrite at zero ppm. People tend to not realize there are many other kinds of bacteria living in their tank that break down waste. These are also important. Another thing to think about is the bacteria that break down waste reproduce much quicker than nitrifying bacteria. This is the reason why cleaning to often is such a bad thing. You'll have an imbalance of both kinds of bacteria. Likewise if you don't clean enough the nitrifying bacteria can out grow the other bacteria. So to sum it up go by how clean your tank stays. Both the water and the surfaces. If it's getting dirty quickly add more. I have a 75 gallon African Cichlid Tank that's so balanced it hasn't had the glass cleaned since August of 2021 and is pristine. Zero algae growth and water never turns green. The way I setup and maintain my tanks none of them grow Algae even with 11 hours of lights on. Any filter can keep your tank "cycled" but that doesn't mean it's efficiently or properly filtering your tank. I say "cycled" in quotes because the way people think of cycled in this hobby is only 3/4 of a true cycle.

I know you've done videos all about cleaning a tank but maybe it's time for a more consolidated one: showing what to do for regular cleaning (like what do you rinse in tap water, what do you rinse in fish water) and how and when to do a major cleaning. Just a thought.
@jmdq1
@jmdq1 Жыл бұрын
Rinse stuff in aquarium water that has been inside the tank water. You have a build up of microscopic good bacteria on things in the water. So you don’t want to use tap water to rinse them off , because tap water has harmful fluoride, chlorine, and other minerals toxic to fish. It could kill the good bacteria you want in your tank. I rinse my new filters that have carbon in water that is treated with the water conditioner, ( the stuff that makes tap water safe for fish ) . The sponges have a lot of plant debris etc stuck on them, so they just need a good squeeze out in the aquarium water you collect from the top of the tank. Then you can put it back on your intake tube and the water in the tank flows thru it better, on to your outside filter. Which in turn keeps those filters from clogging up and your whole flow is faster . With the rinsed off sponge. This I do between changing my over the back Aqueon filter. I have a 36 gallon bow front tank.

The pond guru says 1kg of bio media = a 100 liter tank and that's is good for a normally stocked tank, with a heavily stocked tank you can reduce that by half, so 4kg of biomedia will by good for a 400 liter normally stocked tank, and again half that fig for a heavily stocked tank

There's no such thing as too much filtration on any closed system. Think of it as recreating an environment for any living being, if you have multiple sources of filtration, you're improving the living condition of your enclosed environment by increasing the amount of water being cycled and you require less maintenance, having to mainly clean the first filter once per 3-6 months depending on load and not including evaporation top offs. It's still not advisable but alot more sustainable than running multiple fish tanks even if they're air filtered. A

Here's how I personally look at it... If you take your substrate and literally put more down than you really need I would say make it around 3 to 4 inches thick and buy hang on backs making sure that for example if it's a 125 gallon aquarium I would use 3 of the biggest hang on backs... I wouldn't disturb the gravel much when doing water changes... But vacuum it in sections every couple weeks maybe even once a month but break it down in sections about 14-20%... It will always stay clear!! Because the bacteria build up itself will carry the aquarium... With changing all the cartridges once a month but me personally I use 4 cartridges per bang on back .. I'm telling you in reality you won't be cleaning that tank much... That's a truck I was taught 20 years ago

Moat people under filter thier aquariums, so I feel like having too much filtration is a good things vs worrying about whether or not peeps have too much. But I get it, telling people you need specialized tools will also turn them off from the hobby. It''s why I recommend people to simply replace every filter medium they use to simple sponges and plastic pot scrubbers. Even better: if you ditch all your ceramic media (bio rings, etc) you will also inevitably triple/quadruple sometimes x10, your filter capacity. Ceramic media don't really have as much filtration capacity as we were lead to believe as most of these surface areas are too small for critters and microorganism to colonize and most of it are actually closed off from the outside world. Might be usable for nitrogen gas, but practically useless for the microorganism that do the bulk of the filtration. The surface area cited by companies are really misleading because the test used for getting these result measure nitrogen gas penetration, not actual biological activity. 15 to 30 ppi sponges and plastic scrubbers have way more useable surface area and ensure that water can actually flow through the material. When people really insist on getting an answer on how much filtration is needed, I just tell them to make sure they are getting crystal clear water. If you aren't seeing crystal clear water on a tank that is done cyclin, you likely need more filtration media. Crystal clear water looks like water where your fish looks like they are floating in air. There are exceptions of course, but for the vast majority of people, this applies. Oh btw, while the partial nitrogen cycle is important, the the filter other main function is to prevent diseases in your tan. You will only achieve this if you have enough surface area that has been colonized by the microorganisms live alongside the nitrifying bacteria in your filters. These microorganisms control pests, parasites and infectious agents by literally eating and consuming them from the water column.
@FA-ft9sq
@FA-ft9sq Жыл бұрын
i should add that the other nice benefit with over filtration is that it can lessen maintenance and even make it possible to go completely maintenance free. Having tons of surface area ensures that any organic things in the water will eventually decompose and processed by your filter critters. I have two tanks with canister filters and probably over filtered by a factor of three and I haven't had to servic them in almost six months now. power consumption is really low as well, I essentially jerry rigged it so that only one 7 watt motor runs the multiple canisters per tank.

I disagree with the over filtration. Not all of us want to do constant maintenance. If you have a higher filtration than what is required, I have found in my past 15 years of owning fish, more is better than less. I have a canister filter that can handle up to 150 gallons on a 15 gallon tank and it allows me to control the amount of flow and I can turn it up to act as a vacuum as I do only 25% water changes monthly.
