You'd be surprised how much gold a gold luxury watch contains! But don't take our word for it. See how we take a popular gold Rolex apart and find out its exact gold content by weight.
The watch we used in this picture is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 40, reference number 228238, which is going for around $39,000 in the market as of the day this video was recorded (on 10/8/2020).
Typically, the difference in price between similar stainless steel and gold models of a specific watch brand is significant. Some people think that the price difference is due to the value of gold, but is it really? I mean, the watch movement is not made out of gold, since both gold and stainless timepieces of the same model/brand have the same movements. What's different are the other parts, like the case, bracelet, etc.
So we set out to take the watch apart and weigh those parts, then calculate their total value based on the market price of gold, which was around $1,900 a troy ounce (or $61 a gram) on the day we recorded the video footage.
On the video, you'll see our preferred watchmaker, Yuri Lopez from Chrono Sky (Instagram link below), take the watch apart and set each gold piece on a calibrated scale.
/ chronosky
What interesting thing to mention is that during the last 20 year period, from 2000 to 2020, gold outperformed the US stock market (S&P 500) by a pretty wide margin, making an investment in gold during that same period worth 7 times the initial amount!
On a side note, gold luxury watches, whether for men or women, are made in 18K gold, which is 75% gold by weight. On the video, we also compare the gold weight of the watch to a 24K chunk of gold.
After you watch the video, comment how close was your guess...what percentage of the gold watch's price was due to the dollar value of its gold content?
Happy Guessing!

I had this value proposition when I saw a 1990s 18k Rolex going for $8,500 in 2016-2017. Gold was less but I knew it was perhaps $5000-$6000 on the metal value and the labor value of creating the watch too. Watches have value because of the engineering behind it, and as it's a store of labor. Gold has a value because of the time it takes to mine, its rarity and its refinement process.

Actually no. Worth is not the same as Price. These watches cost a lot because of marketing. When you buy a 10k$ Rolex, you spend about 1000 to 1500$ on the actual watch. The other 8500 is the price of the name 'Rolex'. Let's not fool ourselves. Rolex makes about a million watches a year. It's an industrialized, mostly automated proccess. Their movements are no better than any top grade ETA, and even worse than the Coaxials you'll find in Omegas priced half as much.

I legit guessed 20% exactly. However, the watch isn't priced for gold alone. Labor on making the watch has to be accounted for, the movement of the watch, engineering, and paying someone to assemble it, plus retail mark up. You don't wear precious metals in raw form, so it's justified that a watch like this comes with a high price tag.

So a $39,000 gold watch with only approximately $9,000 worth of gold will have a mark up of $30,000 ? Sounds more like price gouging off of a luxury brand name . Unless the watch is a one of a kind time piece then there is no valid justification for a mark up that high . I'm pretty sure that some of the internal mechanism are used in their other models of Rolex watches because it is massed produced . It's not like you have to wait for the watch to be made on every order , the model watch is sitting in many show case retail stores or stock rooms . It's not even a limited edition in design and technology . There is no $39,000 worth of craftsmanship and materials in the watch but it s mostly $39,000 worth of status symbolism that is being paid for .
@Crmjewelers
@Crmjewelers 3 жыл бұрын
I hear you Manny, but I think that another factor that's causing hard assets like watches to become so inflated is a continuously loose Central Bank policy. 🤷‍♂️
@LordFirestaff
@LordFirestaff 3 жыл бұрын
@@mannybruce8950 Yes and no. One thing you should consider is that you're helping to pay quite a few people's salaries when you buy a watch like this. Even if there is roughly $30K worth of profit, that isn't just going into the pocket of one person/company. Rolex employs 4,000 people worldwide. These people are paid very well for the products they put out. Aside from that, there are also the dealers to account for which make a decent commission on the product. I agree it's somewhat of a status symbol, but it creates ways to help the super wealthy shed some of that weight in wealth and spread it around. When you consider non luxury brand watches, like G Shock for example, that you can pick up in Walmart for $200-$400, not a lot of people are making decent money off of something like that. The commissions can't be very high (if any at all), and because they sell in volume, most of the profits go right into the pockets of the manufacturer. I think there is a huge plus side to having luxury brands on the open market by helping a lot of everyday people earn a better living.

Agreed. When I saw the springbars on the balance I thought: gold plated, more likely so, and you just can’t make a spring out of gold as, yes, steel is much (MUCH) stronger.

I feel surprised as well but I guess if they do go through the effort to make it 18k gold, it is less likely to scratch the watch when you replace the strap? If you put a harder material like steel against gold it's going to easily damage the surface.
@TheCatfishBlues

If they use steel springbars, the steel will damage the gold case (the lug holes) in the long run (just slight micromovements when the watch is used), since its by many factors harder than soft gold.

I have a vintage 36mm Rolex DayDate Reference 1803 with a presidential bracelet (version with hidden clasp) in 18k yellow gold. The watch weighs a total of 127.5 grams. I once disassembled the watch because I had installed a new dial to it and then weighed all the gold parts. The Rolex movement 1556 with dial and hands had a weight of 23 grams and the acrylic glass another 2.5 grams. The bracelet, watch case, case back and crown together had a weight of exactly 102 grams. But only 75% of these 102 grams are pure gold. That's 76.5 grams. That's 4,600$ of precious metal.

Its just a silly mark up back those that can afford to wear this don't care about the money. Its the posers that can't really afford it and buy it that are the real losers. Look at a 20k Lange and its movement finish, alot of thier cost goes into the craft. Not with rolex.

A fallacy in the report but the overall point is a good one. You say most of the price "has nothing to do with the precious metal content." Even though the greater expense may not be from the value of the pure gold content, it could be that an 18k gold Rolex is more expensive to make than a steel one, if a) forming, assembling, and polishing the parts is more expensive with gold (maybe it requires more care or more refined or delicate machinery), or b) maybe Rolex's 18k gold has expensive alloys (the metals mixed with the pure gold to make it 18k) or maybe Rolex has some special way to "mix" its gold. Rose gold, for example, is more expensive than yellow, though it has the same pure gold content. White gold I believe might be 18k, but has silver(?) mixed into it. So, in any of these explanations, the higher price clearly "has something to do with" the precious metal content, even a lot to do with it. But this is all speculation on my part. For that matter, they may even be factoring the cost of transporting or insurance or any other considerations that wouldn't apply with steel. Still, excellent point that it is nowhere near $20,000 worth of gold. Excellent education of consumers in this message. I have often wondered this question. Depending on how accurate my speculations may be, the point definitely stands, probably 90-95-99% accurate. Thank you for the fascinating, very informative video!!
@Alias_Anybody
@Alias_Anybody 3 жыл бұрын
They showed the actual metal content in the video, the 25% are almost 50/50 silver and copper, pretty standard alloy for gold jewelry. And making the parts isn't much harder than it would be with steel either (movement isn't made of gold anyway, other parts are rather straight forward). The price of a Rolex has almost nothing to do with how much it costs to make, just how much the pimps are willing to pay for the brand on the dial.

You should also do a similar on take on a Rolex stainless steel watch of exactly the same type as the gold version . I bet you would find both identical watch movement vary greatly in price reference to the cost of the Gold. It other words the Gold version would be hiked up by a huge margin whey above the value of the Gold. ( same Rolex movement + stainless case/strap ) against ( same Rolex movement + gold case and strap ) so you will be paying for gold way above its actual value. Just because its a Gold Rolex .
