i was a patient in the hospital and i was in the Heart section of ICU and this young 22 year old nurse, i was her first patient. I was the first patient that she ever put in an IV...She did it perfectly, and i told her to take a picture on her phone and text it to your mom... she did and she said "i did it".....her mom was so proud and happy...

I love when people are into pay transparency! In Missouri, where I live, the new grade pay starts at $29/30. I love that they’re moving up wages for nurses because they deserve it. I wish for a time when nurses can make travel nursing pay as staff nursesn

Congrats!!! I’m a teacher and I take home about $1600 every 2 weeks. I used to be a flight attendant and it was about the same. Thanks so much for all you do. An emergency room nurse or ICU nurse sounds completely out of my comfort zone but I’m so glad there are brave women and men who do it!

As someone in his 50s now dealing with an elderly parent whose health is failing, do yourself the biggest favor you possibly can now: get in the habit of saving and investing for the worst times in life, not the best times in life when you imagine yourself retired and on a beach somewhere. You may find yourself set for what remains of YOUR life, but a sick parent or child can wreck those dreams in an instant.

I also live in Oregon and I’m an associate medical laboratory scientist, so essentially a lab nurse. I make 34.16$ plus 2.50$ evening shift differential. I graduated from school five months ago. It’s a really fun job with zero patient interaction, so perfect for people with social anxiety. 😊

Absolutely loved this video! I'm also a nurse in Oregon and it's so interesting to see how different hospitals pay us: my base is $41.02, night shift dif is $4.95, and weekend is $2.95! We used to have extra shift incentives as well but they stopped it a few months ago. When it was in effect, nurses got a $500 bonus if you picked up a full 12 hour shift, time and a half w/ an added $19.50 on top of base. Congrats on your paycheck Sierra! Keep it up

Cheers and well done. When I retired from the Navy, becoming a nurse was my plan. I was basically a logistical and computer guy in the military for 20 years. I took night classes for years to obtain the basic Bio 101, AP 102/102, chem, etc, etc. Since my BS was in computers, I needed to get all of my pre-req courses for Nursing School done for the Application Process started. I applied and was accepted. I took one semester at Nursing School with a very nice college. During the winter break which was 4 weeks, I got a computer job to pay for the next round of books ($$$$). However while doing computer stuff, another person I knew offered me a full time computer job. That was a huge thing for me. I earned a B+ in Nursing school, which as you know is very good. Lot's of people when home and had to re-apply to the school because their grades. I really loved the nursing school, the teaching staff and administration was incredible. But, in 1998 the average starting pay was about 15 per hour/day shift. My computer job was 25/hour/part time. So I wrote a letter to the Ph.D Dean of our school and informed her I was leaving the school. She was very nice and really wanted my to stay. You make great friends with the students and staff, so It was like when I retired from the Navy, a sad day. Now moving forward, my computer positions moved me up to over 100K/ year within 8 years leaving. I had to to retire from computer programming. due to a neck injury. But, even though I am older than most, I would love to start that adventure again. Really, loved the way you broke down the pay process. So many folks don't under day, night, weekend or holiday pay schedules. I'm in a retirement age and still get offers for computer jobs, but having watched your video, I might go back to school! The medical field is in short supply and they help 'everyone'. Thanks and the best luck in your future assignments and growth.

Thanks for being honest about wages. I’m a union heavy equipment operator in Oregon and we make on average $45.26 an hour, and time and a half after eight hours with double time on Sunday or holidays. Four year apprenticeship starting at 80% of journeyman wage. I will say this though, our work in Oregon can be hit and miss due to weather. Average yearly income is around 75k to 110k. Congratulations on becoming a nurse!

Your video showed up in my feed and I thought it was cool to see the breakdown in pay for someone different in my field. I’m in the technology field and I have about $800 taken from taxes. I get paid salary but if I did the calculation - my gross hourly pay would be $55 but after taxes it nets to about $37. It’s interesting to see the difference. Thanks Sierra. The salary link you shared is very helpful. I did a brief salary comparison of different areas. I live in North Carolina. Most of the hospitals in this area gave across the board wage adjustments based on experience (no certification diffs or BSN diffs) earlier this year. I now know why; they must have been losing nurses to better paying areas (which was ,apparently, almost everywhere). Interesting! My wage increase was huge.

I am a “new grad nurse” working in Ohio. I was offered 32.50, but my rate jumped up 34.50 within the first couple weeks. I also work in the OR and once my 6 month orientation is up, I will be put on call and make even a little more (couple bucks sitting at home and time and a half when called in). Absolutely love the OR even if I feel clueless some days 😂

I appreciate your transparency. I’m broke and I’ve been broke 😬 school was really expensive. I graduated a week and a half ago. I’ll be an RN in a month or so, as soon as I take the NCLEX. Talking money doesn’t bother me either. I took an ER residency, night shifts. Where I live I’ll start at $38/hr with night differential. Your paycheck kinda scares me, cause I have rent/bills/car/insurance/loans 🥲 I was nervous enough for this ER residency, but the money part makes it worse.

That's different than what I'm used to. At my hospital you get the differential of whatever the majority of your shift is. So for 7p-7a you get night shift differential for the entire 12 hours since the majority of your shift is 3rd.

There is such a nursing shortage in our country of nurses so it doesn't surprise me that hospitals and nursing homes are doing all they can to retain nursing staff. I thought about becoming a nurse myself at one point, but the idea of sticking a needle on someone's body was just too much for me 😂Stay with nursing, you obviously seem very passionate about it and that's what matters! I'm in healthcare as well, just not anything with providing direct medical care. I'm and administrator and that works best for me. Thanks for sharing. If your interested in ways to pay off your student loans I know how to do so by still being a nurse. Just FYI.

That’s an amazing base pay. My base as a new grad RN in 2012 was $22/hr. Working night shift amounted to an extra $10,000/yr.

That’s actually really good. In 2017, nurses where I worked made significantly less than that even with many years of ICU experience. Some of the clinical ladders to increase pay make it almost impossible after a certain point. A lot of hospitals will pay as little as possible and staff as little as possible. We got several “market raises” because our pay was behind everyone else. The raises are a joke too. Inflation used to be about 2% and our standard raise was 2% so really we weren’t even getting a real raise. I’ve changed careers but it’s nice to see that some of you all are at least getting paid better. Unfortunately, I feel like travel nursing or changing jobs every two years is the best way to make money as an RN because a lot of hospitals don’t take care of their nurses.

I was so excited to earn a good check my first 5 years because I made the most out of all my friends. However, after about 8 years, they began to move past me, had off weekends and holidays. After 15 years, everyone made more than me. Nurses max out quickly in healthcare. Plan ahead!

I’m a 70 year old retired Metrologist from a DOE National Standards Lab and my main hobby for the last eleven years has been having surgeries. Three years ago I came down with pulmonary fibrosis and COPD. As a result I spend a WHOLE LOT of time in this chair watching you tube. I know a good channel when I see it! Anyway, if You get tired of Nursing I guarantee You could make a killing in modeling!!

You're doing well! I'm a new grad too and I start my second week tomorrow. Same thing with me, I'm in orientation dying of boredom in classes. My pay is way lower: $30.14/hr base, $3.50/hr diff for night shift, and $5.50/hr if it's a weekend. No incentives, but I can get time and a half as well as a sign-on bonus of 15k for a one year contract. I feel like Florida doesn't pay nurses that high as I'm seeing many Floridian nurses make less on average. That's OK though, this pay is literally double my last job's pay with the base pay alone. My first paycheck will be exciting!

For those who don’t know, OT is calculated before shift differential is added.

I just started nursing school so I’m nowhere near this point. But as far as overtime. I do know MANY places have another incentive. Even though you are only scheduled for 36 hours, the last four hours of your shift are overtime because you’ve worked over 8 hours in a single shift. So on every 36 hour week you STILL have 12 hours of overtime. Maybe it’s not a common thing in your state though. Congratulations on your journey and I can’t wait to get there

I recommend going to the IRS withholdings calculator and adjusting how much is taken out of your check. I was paying way too much in taxes and I thought getting a tax return was good. now I'm getting way more in my checks and lowered how much I get during tax time.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your base pay as a nurse in Oregon! I’m an LVN in California, I work as an MDS in a skilled nursing facility. I make about $39. I’m almost done with my RN, and in snf, starting pay is about $50-$55 as an RN!

ED nurse from Nebraska for the past 5 years, quick tip I wish I knew years ago… if you’re going to pickup and work 8 shifts in a pay period make sure to work 5 shifts in one week and then work 3 the next week. You’ll end up making more this way instead of 4 and 4

As a new grad LPN in Florida, I make $20.60 / hr. I worked the night shift and made about $2 in the differential. I am working dayshift now since I went back to nursing school for my RN, just 2 months after beginning work. I wish I made more because I do almost everything an RN does, but it is only temporary. I did get a $5,5000 bonus (that includes a $2500 relocation bonus) because I had to do a major move when I started working. With that being said, almost $1500 was taken out in taxes, which stinks.
