Remember that the average epidermis is 20 micrometers (0.02mm thick). That is 5 times thinner than a sheet of paper. It's almost impossible to tattoo without reaching the dermis. So don't worry about being too shallow.

Great tips. I use the same thickness practice skin and it was very helpful in knowing if I had the needle depth set right and if I had blowout.

Awesome videos. I'm new to rotary/pens. Been tattooing on and off since 1995. Did a 3 year apprenticeship in AZ. Made needles built machines(coil) made needles with a jig. I too like to go from needle depth rather than ride the tube. I like how your video is detailed and to the point. These rotary's are lighter less hand fatigue, quieter and just all around better. Guess I need to get with the times. From one artist to another great job. I'm just used to coils.

Can you do a video about wraps and grip? ( grip I think you covered already) wrapping a machine is personal preference, but, there's a lot of techniques with different wraps. Fat wraps for lining, smaller ones for shading and flicking, medium for color packing, etc. Love your videos! You keep it straight to the point.

Hey man I practiced on myself last night and whilst the stencils I made and art came out good all my lines are a little wonky and in some parts the ink didn't really sit at all. this vid actually helped a lot. if I retry this at some point on myself or practice skin il pay attention to this as I didn't realise that speed and needle depth was super important, kinda seems obvious now I watch this, also realised I have to watch my voltage!

Good video! Maybe make a video showing angle of machine while tattooing lines, shading and packing? My Mentor let me practice my linework and all on him and myself. A few bloodline tattoos and I was ready for the first tattoo with actual ink. It was only black...lined and packed. That was 1977...Damn time does fly!

Hiya. Great video. I've just started out practicing on fake skin. I read a lot of comments that line work should be around 7-8v with a wand. I personally feel better with a much slower 3-4v. What are the issues with using lower voltage, my lines are evenly saturated with no blow outs after a few months of practice

I started of just recently, I’ve been practicing blending I’m on my 5th day but it feel natural to me. Skin feels like normal in a few hours. Burns like normal.

I absolutely love how were all tattooing are own selfs now'a'days. Cuz they charging up the ass out here in Cali. Haven't gone in years and both my legs are sleeved up, done my neck, my arms, my stomach etc. I'm a very patient person(also ambidextrous) tho so I don't condone doing more then your thigh if your not good with control of your hands.

i have been practicing on fake skin for a little while, and decided to do some practice on myself. i have tattooed myself once before and it came out really well! this one did not, lol but this video helped a lot with the issues that i dealt with, so thank you! i think ill get some more practice on fake skin for a while :P

Hi, I'm practicing tattooing on the same practice skin as you and the lines look good even if I tattoo so deep the needle goes through. When you refer to it being easy to spot a blowout on thin practice skin do you mean that the blowout shows up as the needle going through? I'm just wondering if the right needle depth is when the needle is still fully staying inside. Might be a dumb question honestly but I've been told the needle should go somewhere between 1-2mm and if the skin is 1.2mm does it mean a blowout if I tattoo through... Love your videos btw! So helpful!

I’m artist. My friend recently suggested I should tat. As fashion designer I’m taught to know everything. I find new skill sets and hobbies with art and now I’m going to tattoo. Who knows what can come of this. This is for me. I will be learning and so excited to practice daily. Thank u for providing these videos. Did not have this type of stuff when I got my first tat. This is truly amazing. Now I will have tattoo, work out videos , art and fire dancing on my KZfaq.

So the dermis is 3 to 4mm beneath the epidermis. Which means I can have my needle coming out at the 3mm mark but only use 1.5 mm depth and not ride the tube. Now won’t I still be just outing in in the epidermis at 1.5mm? Please let me know.

so your Yuelong thin skin is easier to run lines on than the 3mm . I ask because they were out of the thin ones you recommended. Iam using Star Bright and was having a time then tried some practice ink and worked much better what would you suggest please and thank u

I think my practice skin is really bad. It doesn't holds the ink whenever I tried to clean it the ink smudges everywhere. And skin breaks apart so quickly that some of the pieces got stuck on my needle. Or is this normal?

My first and only tattoo I have ended up being a blowout. The ink expanded and the lines even merged or faded

My thought exactly when I first got hand in these fake skins. That surely it is better to practice on these thinner skins, over those 3+mm thick silicone skins. Cause on these you can see your mistakes on the backside. It have been my goal for every one of these I've finished, to not have blow outs on the backside of them. And I can say, it is clear to see a difference from the first skin I tried on, to now 20+ skins later.

so when we talk about "hand control" on how dark or soft the ink is going to be shown, how can it be very light and still not disappears after healing? (cuz a lot of pll only uses dark ink for different shades of dark

I know how to line but damn.. just had one I forgot ointment on.. lines were ghosty.. just got a coil.. did two tattoos before his with this new machine.. worked great... think ointment is to blame for light lines? I mean dude I struggled and sweated just to make one solid line.. lmk
