The Sailing Wind Therapy crew (Jeff and Adrienne) have been asked a lot how much it actually cost to convert our Leopard 45 Charter boat into our cruising home. This video is based on our previous video where we explained all of the Conversion work we completed which is titled:

OMG! Your explanation for getting the top of the line mattress for only your bed is hilarious. When the ex and I bought our first brand new home we went mattress shopping for the spare/guest bedroom. The salesperson kept trying to upsell us (I meant, why not, it's their jobs to do so?) and finally I made the comment that "I did not want a super comfy mattress for that room because then guests would want to stay longer than 2 or 3 days. It was our home, not a hostel!" The salesperson laughed so hard and loud the manager came over in fear then laughed with all of us. That plan worked for over 10 years!

Good plan! We figured 5-6 nights is a good visit. Not too short or long and our guests can still make it home and get an extra day to decompress before going back to work. It’s those retired friends we have to watch out for though. 😜

Thank you for responding . You answered my question when you said you purchased from the mooringS. They would be one of the few that would commission the boats in a minimal way. This now explains why you have had to add things like radar. Normally radar, ais and a good chart plotter would be very basic installs. All the other things you did are fantastic and proper. I delivered a Leapard a year ago and sitting in the helm seat was terribly uncomfortable. The changes you made were perfect.
@SailingWindTherapy
@SailingWindTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind that a Moorings boat almost always lives in the same region such us the BVI. For people chartering and sailing around the BVI, radar and ais is really not ever needed. No one is allowed to sail at night or in bad weather conditions.

Wow! Kinda mind-boggling, but nice job going back through it. The first video I saw of yours was the walkthrough of all the changes and additions. The boat does look beautiful. Good taste, very neat, and wonderfully organized. The only thing missing for me was a mind-blowing total at the end. I'm hoping to become a single, senior, female liveaboard in the not too distant future, but I'll be in the make-it-do camp!

@@SailingWindTherapy Only if you don't put it in context of what you originally paid for the boat and what you think it's now worth after your investment. We went thru a similar exercise on our refit (ours was more restoration than upgrades) and while we spent around $100K, we bought the boat cheap enough that when we were done, the market value was still higher than what we had into it in total. But totally understand if you don't want to get into that level of disclosure. In the meantime, very impressive project on your part.
@SailingWindTherapy
@SailingWindTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
@@svechappe6075 thanks! We plan to live on the boat for many years and these modifications are going to make the experience tremendously better for starters. As far as the word “investment goes”…it’s a boat and of course not usually an appreciating asset. However in these times it makes a big difference and if we sold her now we feel we would get a lot of this money back. Thanks for the great comment and watching too!
@svechappe6075
@svechappe6075 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailingWindTherapy Totally get it. After our refit project was done and we moved onto the boat to sit out the pandemic, we discovered a bunch of "quality of life" projects we wanted to do and proceeded to spend a chunk more on those. They were actually more fun than the refit project, which was focused mostly on bringing the boat back to presentable condition.

I really like this video. I'm in the process of buying a 48 through the moorings right now, just waiting on some gel-coat repairs and general cleaning/polishing on the boat before flying down to the BVI to pick it up. I appreciate the insights on the costs involved in having everything professionally fabricated and installed. While I'm fully capable of doing the work myself, I'd rather pay someone else to get it done a lot faster, and with far less trouble and travel than I can...

Great video. I’m thinking of doing something similar. I’d love to hear your thoughts on all the different options concerning putting a cat into one of the different Moorings charter programs. Keep cranking out the good content! Love your channel!

Thanks for the love! We did a presentation with Leopard a few months back which may answer a bunch of your questions. It’s at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6epl8ye35q4h6M.html Can you take a look at it and then see if that answers your questions? When we put both of our boats (the first one was destroyed in Hurricane Irma) in The Moorings, we had them as crewed yachts. The income is based on the purchase price of the boat. The crewed yachts cost more (because the include a bunch more things) so you get a larger monthly check. But check out the vid above and then let us know what other questions you have. We’d be happy to answer them for you. 😊 And bottom line was that the Moorings program worked perfectly for us based on our needs and situation.

@@SailingWindTherapy We have spent the past several months upgrading our boat, very similar to your video today LOL!!!! New radar, MFD's, AIS, sensors , upgraded water maker, new cushions, we also converted ours from the charter version to the rear master cabin, new generator, new tender & motor, upgraded solar & batt's, etc, etc, where does this list stop. We will make our first trip to the Bahamas in January. Our range is about 1K to 1.2K miles with full tanks. Our AIS ID is TOM CAT (Athens TX).

I kept my Road Glide and keep it at my in-laws house But I was missing it a lot while cruising and will always miss it. Going 8 instead of 80 is a different experience for sure!

Love an informational sailing video. I guess that's the nerd factor in me. However, what was the total? I was hoping at the end you would give a total. So much so, I didn't keep track. Just doing round numbers, you may have spent more on upgrades than I did on my 1991 Morgan 45. We chartered that very same boat in Coral Gables and we know why you changed out the mattress!!! Thanks again for sharing this info. So many channels show the repairs but never share the cost. I am slowly catching up. Damn job keeps getting in the way of my personal life!!

Hi, thanks for watching our videos. The total came to roughly $140k. We were nervous to put it in the video, so we purposely left it out. My dad has a 1980 Morgan 38. It's a great boat. He and I lived on it for 2.5 years while I was in high school. And yes, that mattress had to go. Thanks again for watching, and happy new year!

I also am fascinated with Solar and see many putting Bimini's without solar panels, It seems to me that the roofs are wasted space unless Solar panels are incorporated on them, why did you not put more solar on the Bimini knowing your thoughts about solar...
@SailingWindTherapy
@SailingWindTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. If you’re referring to the Bimini top over the helm station, it’s just too small. We have a sky light up there to view the Main. The rest of the space is just too small to go thru the expense to install a small panel. If you’re referring to the coach roof which is basically the whole roof, there are possibilities but limitations also. We are looking to install two 400w panels on the port aft portion of the roof. They should be far enough away from the boom so we can still work on the main when necessary. If we put them on the sloping forward part of the boat then we run the serious risk of the headsail sheets getting caught and ripping them off. Now I’m talking about the solid panels not the flexible walk-ons. The flexible ones are still just too small and expensive to justify installing. Hope that answers your question. 😊

Thanks John. We wanted a better Coax cable which should give us longer range then what came from Leopard. So we ended up having a better coax, redundancy in case one goes bad, and the VHF and AIS don’t have to share the same coax ( even though I don’t think it’s a big deal if AIS temporarily doesn’t work while we’re using the radio). But… with that said, the Splitter is certainly a very good (and less expensive option too). 😊
