This episodes discuss how much money junior hockey players get paid in Canada. I show you my WHL contract and how much players in the CHL get paid. This episode will discuss how players who get paid in Junior hockey have to get paid under the rug in order for them to keep their NCAA eligibility.
CHL contracts are standard to all players and players get paid monthly, not on salary. Lastly, we discuss the CHL class action lawsuit and punishment CHL teams can receive from violating player benefit.

You conveniently forgot to mention that all your room and board is paid for, your food is paid for, your travel expenses are paid for and all your equipment and stick are paid for. Add all this up and each player is receiving close to $3000 per month. Multiply this by 18 players and each team is spending close to $55,000 per month on its players. Over the course of an 8 month season, each team is spending close to half a million dollars on its players. On top of this, the team has coaching expenses, gm expenses, scouting expenses, etc. It is rare to see a junior team sell out an arena game after game. The money a junior team makes is probably just enough to sustain the team's expenses. Junior team provide kids a chance to play hockey and to give exposure to professional leagues around the world. And if all this isnt enough, each player gets a free post secondary education once they are finished playing tier 1 junior 'A' hockey. If junior teams were to pay out any more money than what they are currently paying, teams would go bankrupt and there would be no junior leagues to play in.

VanCityVideos 3000 a month is ridiculous... You pull that out of your ass? Billet parents get between 300-600 dollars a month depending on where you play. Players get sticks gloves and pants, all provided at a large discount to the teams due to sponsorship. You never played junior did you?

This guy had 1 point in 32 career whl games which is pretty much half a season. While still a major accomplishment getting drafted and getting any ice time in the chl I do find it funny the only players I've heard complain about pay are the ones who never really did much lol

There are lot of former CHL players that can't get their college money now. David Branch tells them to hit the road.

Isn't there an option to not get a stipend and just play for a scholarship to a really good hockey program? I'm not sure how Canada's collegiate leagues work, but down here, if you get paid even a small stipend, you're playing professional hockey. I consider major junior hockey semi-professional because it's players get paid, and Junior A and tier 1 are high level amateurs playing strictly for scholorships and to possibly enter the NHL draft or secure contracts for ECHL or SPHL clubs. Just how I see it. Major Junior Hockey is one step down from fully professional hockey. Basically it's a defacto developmental territory.

Sarnia Sting played in an arena for their first four seasons that could only seat less than 2,000 people before the Progressive Auto Parts Centre was built (formerly known as the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre and the RBC Centre)

Do you think CHL players should be getting paid more? Or not paid at all so they can keep their NCAA eligibility?

Many Industries misclassify workers as Independent contractors when in fact they are Employees and the CHL is no better, the players in my opinion are Employees and are entitled to minimum wage and all employment benefits and I side with Sam Berg and the players in the lawsuit.

I hate to break to you but the Judge Certified WHL OHL Lawsuit, You’re using the same type of scare tactic that Con Smythe try to use against the Toronto Maple Leafs back in the 1950’s and they all voted in NHLPA under the Ontario Labour code. I know CHL likes Laundering money.

Most people that own CHL teams are just the most wealthy people in the Community and don't do it for money just to say they own the team. Once they start losing millions of dollars because of The minimum wage those teams won't be around and everyone will just look for the NCAA contract. When I was JR age hockey it was free here in Canada now at the JR A level it's about 5000$ to start playing with a team and about 1000 to play JR B which was free five years ago. So when the CHL buckles to these lawsuits family's will be paying 10-20 thousand a year for the kids to play. The cost have a player dressed at retail. Helmet 300$ with visor , shoulder pads 200$ elbow pads 170$ pants 220$ shin pads 180$ jock 70$ skates 1000$ gloves 200$ mouthguard 40$ skate sharpen 6$ tape 5$ bag 50$ stick tape 5$ plus the 5/6 sticks player use a season at 300+. So in one season they get 10000$ worth of expenses on the players then each ice time is about 200$ an hour so let's say 15000$ each player in a season. The bus then is 2000$ a year for each player. And because they can't get college (NCAA )for free because they make 2000$ a year.

Exploiting child labor laws? Not even close man. It is not a liveable wage I will agree... You don't need one. You get free school. Free food. A place to stay. Don't take those other things for granted. American football players walk on to college teams just for the love of the game and a chance at higher education. Exploiting child labor....maybe you don't love hockey. It feels too much like a job.

They should honestly should stop paying guys. So they are not classified as Pros anymore. The league will actually get better because guys won't be afriad to play there because they can go play NCAA which is better then Canadian college hockey. They NCAA will get better because they can pull from a better pool of players. Also Guys that get drafted in the NHL and sign contracts will be forced to play in the NHL or AHL. They wont have to wait until they are 20 because the CHL Holds your rights. The ECHL, AHL and NCAA will benefit from it greatly. But the USHL and NAHL will be hurt I think.
