Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

TUBI is one of those recent platforms which emerged, semi-quietly....but, with an impressive collection of: recent, old school, classic, forgotten, or independent films (and TV series). Netflix proves (ironically, like its Blockbuster Video predecessor....or dominant social media platforms.....or, national movie theater chains...) if a company becomes a behemoth and dominates a field too much (resulting in discrimination, and politicizing.....) people will seek/create a viable alternative.

Fabulous presentation. Interesting how the rights holders make their money in production as opposed to just counting on box office. It’s like the opposite of the cinemas: you pay for distribution and then hope to sell enough tickets. Here they already pay the filmmakers in hopes that it generates views. I try to correct folks when they say “there’s no good ideas in Hollywood anymore.” There are, they’re just a little harder to find now. Lot of em are straight to streaming.

I've seen people post in a film Facebook group that they were offered $2500 for their film by Netflix. Idunno if that was period or each quarter or pay period, but they each said agreement was 2 years.

You've got to remember he's talking about a certain caliber of indie film. One that most here won't match - budget, actors, production values etc (I'm guessing). So his numbers are pretty high for most of the filmmakers I'm imagining are listening. Remember that he can only talk about what he knows and has experience of. So check his IMDB (and anyone else who you're listening to) and if your films are of the same level/quality then the advice is solid. If not, then look elsewhere.
@playstationaccount4473
@playstationaccount4473 2 жыл бұрын
so what budget are you speaking of.....for this calibre of film to be able to be made? 100 thousand dollars....which includes....location, cast, food,camera and equipment? I am a producer given the reigns of a production house from his father and i want to shoot a feature by December. already looking at story and novel rights. so yeah.....what budget range?

Why does any stranger on the internet offer sarcasm to a serious inquiry?
@milesflanagan4899
@milesflanagan4899 2 жыл бұрын
@@playstationaccount4473 I genuinely replied. Not sure why you'd think that was a sarcastic answer at all. It isn't. I run films festivals and a film distribution company and those are the types of budgets we deal with. So that's why I answered with those numbers ($5K being at the high end). Meaning that the majority of indie films are in that range - with no B (or Z) movie actors bookending them. Just unknowns. So it's hard to get traction and attention for them. And the market is flooded with these types. Both my festivals and distribution company are run for the love of filmmaking and to help average low budget filmmakers get their work seen and to hopefully make some money (though sadly it's usually not much). So again, my answer is deadly serious. The industry has changed massively in the 15 years I've been involved - from the boom years of DVDs to the slim earnings from streaming. But I am interested why you'd think it was sarcastic. Love to hear back from you. Hate to be misunderstood. Plus you have to understand the value of your product before you can work out what the budget would be. I know the value of the films I distribute so I always tell new filmmakers to make them for as little as possible. Hence the $50 to $5000 suggestion. Having a 'name' actor can help, understanding genres and understanding economic filmmaking are all part of the process. Speak soon.

I understand his point about drama but I disagree. It’s a perfect time for drama because collectively we needs a catharsis. Look at dramatic periods of history, such as times of war. Post Vietnam, for example, we were flooded with drama. Why? Because we collectively needed to make sense of it, we needed that catharsis. That said, I do agree with that we are also looking for a bit of an escape. I think it’s a period for both, and if you can combine both, then perhaps you have the winning formula.
@maverickzerof1

Perhaps you're right about your last statement, but going back to 9/11 we've had so many dramatic films and it hasn't stopped at all. Guillermo del Toro, Christopher Columbus and Cuarón had to join together to defend film as a medium for escapism... It got to that point, where people were saying that movies should just reflect our world to educate and make people aware of situations around the globe, which is fine but we can't eliminate film as a medium for telling fiction with the purpose of entertaining and escape. It's no wonder with this huge influx of dramatic films and shun of escapism that we are all so stressed with zero ways of escaping our daily lives for an hour and a half or two... We need both, but right now we need to make people remember how to dream, to aspire to something else, to inspire, to have fun too.

I'm going to ad to this scary story that just happened to me..I signed with a distributor two years ago..our movie was distributed through streeming platforms and was pirated from that on sites with paid adds.this happened before the pandemic..moving forward ..they kept all the money..it did very well across the board..quarterlies where never straight forward ..always a mess to confuse us, money wise..so zero to us..but now..I'm being chased by the distro because I've blown the whistle on them..cannot afford the legal to support my case..but there are many of us that are being screwed..I believe based on all research our movie pulled in around 200k..well multiply this by 70 precent of all films that are taken advantage of by this distributer..they are banking big time..I've now been threatened with sanctions..to shut me up by their legal council..and have threatened decimation suit against me..I'm may loose my job as well..these guys in my opinion would go to lengths of putting a hit on any that are considered threats to their scam... I will not shut the truth from the film makers..be careful all all these distributors are ready to take your movie and own you..you will never make money or see your film back..they have now taken my film down...and only by manipulation can I get it back..either by payback or manipulating me to apologize publicly with many loose threads that can take my apology and make money on top of what they have made through a lawsuit to pay out damafes..so now..I don't have my movie back and the have taken all the money and are waiting to sue me for damages...This is base on a true story of mine and is written with my personal opinion...best intentions to whistle blow..fyi..be careful..these guys don't play around and can not only screw you financial..they can also have you taken out..truth be told..it's become a mob organization...most film makers don't know this and most just gripe and move on..but for those that dig to deep..will be buried deep..in my personal opinion
