It took me 2 years to become a profitable player. At the time I was lighting money on fire and wasn’t in a good place in life. Fast forward 10 years later I’m a winning player. Now I’m constantly learning off the table. I put in way more time off the felt then on it.

You're telling the real deal jnandez... It's not pretty in the beginning. Took me three shots before I was finally able to get it right. I'd bust and then I'd have to go back to work. Finally with more study, better bankroll management and a clearer view of what I was actually going after....it finally came together. Been Pro for 3 years now. Very good to put things into perspective here with the time investment required. Some newer viewers to the channel may be seeing 4K an hour, 15K in two hours and saying, "this poker thing must be easy...I should give it a try". And there goes their plans for their Christmas bonus this year. Keep up the good tutoring work.

I've tried live NLHE, online NLHE and online PLO all cash, never liked tournaments. What I can say with my (shitty) experience is if you play live: play NLHE. If you play online: play PLO. Live is so easy but you lose so much time and play so few hands. Online is definitely tougher but PLO is more filled with people with no basic knowledge therefore is still (very?) profitable.

nice one, painful truth but got me thinking. Been funplayer 4 about 8-9 years, studied a bunch and followed many streamers but never got to the point to actually grind lower stakes as I should consider the bankroll managemant. I should probably of course get the holdem manager as well. I have 60 days break from pokerstars now, but will study hard until the I can play again, and then slowly grind it up. I needed this video. For the past 8 years I'm stuck at the micros, busting bankroll after bankroll, stop play start play. Maybe this game ins't for me ahahha I will stick to others activities.

Good video, especially at the end. Most poker players end up losers in the long run due to rake, in ability to get up when they lose. You can have 10 winning sessions, but if you can't get up after a losing session, you would end up losing it all in one session.

Great video as always! In my case, I work as a Doctor, I am 32, so I think it´s best to play MTTs and cash in my free time and if I hit something big I can think of working less in Medicine and playing more poker. It doen´t make sense for me to grind from the bottom. I am married, don´t have time, energy hehe. But I study every day and play whenever I can. Cheers!

Nice vid. Next video should be "How much money do you need to live in Switzerland". I visit on a short trip this summer and it´s pretty expensive:) I bet it´s easier to be a poker pro in a less developed country. For some 1k or 2 k a month can make you a king.

I had been breakeven for like 4 years, suddenly flipped the switch with game selection and a much more hands on approach.... Took A LOT of work though. Not for the faint-hearted... I lost friends due to how long i did not see them, because i was playing poker alll the time. Never mind though, if they were real friends they wouldn't have cared as much as they did... Very worth it in the end and i am so happy to finally be grinding like the grinders i watched online back in the glory days of poker.... I am making nowhere near as much money... But more than i would be in some crappy minimum wage job (which is all i could get anyway, because my social skills are absolutely terrible, job interviews always go horribly for me)... I do understand your point about if you are not beating the games for 2 years, just quit... I think 99% of the time you are right... I don't think many people will be prepared to do what i have done.

At this moment iam finishing my thesis and always wanted to try and play poker for a living for at least 6 months to see the results... but do i really want that for me? be pressured by the need to got the money at the end of the month? I am working up in my way and i completely understand everything you say about poker and they couldn't be more true than that. Hey JNandez. Thanks a lot for the video. Just a quick question. What do you think about stop win? You could set up for 5 hours of grind, but what if in one hour you get like 10~20buy ins or whatever, and "feel like it is enough" for the day?

Using sites with recreational players like william hill or ladbrokes and playing small stakes while having moderate knowledge but not enough to win against players on poker stars will I be able to be profitable?

The problem is that all online pros started building their roll when they were living in their parents' place, didn't have any expenses and had a lot of free time because they were not working full time and had big semester breaks. If I need 4-5k per month for living and I can play 2 hours per day, how long would it take for me to quit my job and turn pro? Probably 5 years or more? If I play 40h per week if turned pro, so how big of a bankroll and which stakes do I need to play to make it possible with monthly expenses of 4-5k? Is it maybe a better idea to move to Eastern Europe where I can live on $1000 per month? How much of a bankroll would I need for that to make at least 3k per month?

I think that at NL a very solid win-rate is 2 bb at 1/2. You can basically take 2/5 of 66,000 (his example) for your income -- $26,400 -- not exactly the dream. And, you will have to work your ass off for that -- pay insurance, retirement, taxes, etc. Problem is, your not even guaranteed this financial dream; instead you could waste your youth and go broke and have no resume to fall back on. You would make more money collecting cans to recycle, and have a more impressive resume. Welp, see you on the tables.

Not a lot. About 7 out of 12 are losing players. 4 out of 12 are breaking even. If you're above average you can make unemployment benefit wage (1 out of 12). If you're exceptional you can make a teacher's wage (1 out of 25). If you're borderline genius you can make engineer's wage (1 out of 1000). 1 out of 50000 can make CEO wage. You're constantly dealing with isolation, depression and a harmful lifestyle.

What do you think about differences in the return rate for online vs live poker? I know guys like Andrew Neeme are talking about much less return in live poker: 5bb/hour. I guess it would make sense from the perspective of the number of hands you play in online poker. But if that is the case, I can't wrap my head around the fact why one should focus on live. Any comment?

being that i haven't yet entirely learned the hold'em game (im at 18%roi in 9 handed sit and gos over 25k games but only playing $1 and $3 games at about a 3:1 ratio.) Would you say that i should rise the stakes in holdem, now that i know for sure i am at least crushing it a little bit, and then use that money to play omaha, or should i just jump on the 5nl PLO and just 1 table again and start relearning? or is that a better task after i have already build the bankroll up... I know it's kind of a personal decision, but i'd like to ask what you would do here? If you were suddenly this person? It's been a long and enjoyable road learning holdem, and i feel like omaha will be very much the same. I kind of feel like i know how the swings will effect me. I have experienced many stages of over-confidence and burn-out, these 25k games have taken me around a year to do.... And i've been taking money out of the bankroll this whole time to pay for my life (haven't had a job this whole time, and while i've been living frugally, i have been surviving even playing these tiny stakes , as my cost of living is low, due to shared accommodation and a fairly non existent diet) My discipline is definitely there. But my MAIN problem, is that when i try to play the sit and gos AND learn ANY OTHER format at the same time, it hurts my results in both i think... So i feel as if i must do 1 and not both.... Either learn PLO cash OR NLHE tourneys and sngs.... I enjoy playing every single day, 9 hours per day actually playing, at least 1 hour of revision at the beginning and end of every day... So essentially i have 11 hours PER DAY to invest into poker. I guess my question is, where do i go... I am not super good at game selection yet, seeing as the games i am playing are almost always profitable, but very much micro stakes, and i have to play SO MANY games per day, just to make 60 bucks EV, But the feeling i got when taking shots at the $5 games and then getting crushed, then a week later, coming back with a new strategy and crushing THEM (around a week ago, but then got banned and waiting on ID, so this week is hard study and re-evaluation time, hence this massive comment)..... Essentially what i am saying while, while yes, i am still at the micro-stakes, i think that is about to be over now, and i will start making arooouuund "job money" finally. So while i look at omaha, and can see a muuuuch longer shelf life in terms of edge, i look at all the work it took just to get to the $5 sit and gos, and that makes me wanna think again... cannot possibly afford coaching right now. BUT i can spend ALLLL my time thinking about poker and playing poker. My girlfriend is incredibly supportive and knows that my brain is up to the task, if i am allowed to do it... my parents were not so supportive, hence we moved out into our new flat, but this has basically crushed any chance of being able to put aside money, we are saving just over $250 bucks a month, which is going towards my girlfriends driving lessons, car and insurance, which we will reach in around 7-8 months given no major speed-bumps.... So.... without getting coaching (at least in the next 7-8 months) what would you do here? I would like to say, the only reason i do not have a job, is that my personal skills are not up to par with the job market that i would like to become a part of, i am stuck with only very low-skilled job applications being successful, thanks to my lack of ability to explain my strengths in words and always wind up either talking about poker or rambling in some other way, appearing dumber than i am, getting assigned to tasks which are too simple for my easily roaming mind. I know i seem like i am selling myself a lot here, but that is only because the main bulk of advice i receive, seems to be A) from poker players i see as worse than myself.... And/or B) telling me to step back from the game and be more part-time.... Or C) Get coaching....... This is mainly to confirm or add to that list of 2 options basically, either change poker to a part time thing, or, wait until you have received coaching to take shots at the mid-stakes games....... Is switching to omaha worth it for me at this particular time? or would you advise against it??? THIS QUESTION GOES OUT TO ALL (I APOLOGISE PROFUSELY FOR THE LENGTH, i did try to keep it brief, but i essentially need to give my entire situation in order to get an accurate(ish) answer) BUT IF JNANDEZ (unlikely to get the time i understand) could answer this question in the form of either a response, or more broadly addressed video. That would be more than awesome, and likely an absolute life-saver... Good to see that you are still going strong and look better than ever in terms of health, you are definitely my biggest inspiration in the poker world (even though we play different games this whole time). You have done wonders in keeping the dream alive for me. All the way from your first video.. I was like "damn, there are new good players who are crushing and at least making decent money out there who also are not playing live".... top 5 or 10 % of people are playing poker for a living that is the definition of difficult. Its not like the 90% are all there to hand you money. u got to work hard just like anything and got to be obsessed about it.

Trying to make $1500 a month playing poker for a lviingis incredibly difficult. Only way is too play an insane amount of mtt's and be able to make very quick profitable decisions always.... I only play 8 mtt's at once and i usually have no time to spare. Timer is always running out. Cash games arejust too difficult with titling etc... Nobody plays as well when they are losing in cash games on multiple tables.. I can be down a ton on the day in mtt's and still plya well because I know what are the risks in mtt's for the stakc size and bets I will make... it's way more crytpic in cash games on what is the right and wrong moves in pots at the time you're doing them.

i currently make 50-100$ at plo5 and plo10 per day. basically only knowledge i picked up was from either phil galfond or jnandez. jnandez content is much better for low and mid stakes players though as theres many direct examples. i wish i was able to see him playing on the site and with the players i play with for an hour. i would love to see how he would adapt to them. also plo is a cruel game. i run almost 40 buy ins under ev and out of the last 4 days i had 3 days where i ran more than $100 under ev each day. and my bankroll is just at ~$150. it feels bad and my mindset is crushed. i actually need help as i would love to bring the plo thing further :/

Hello J; what if I told you that 85 or 90% of the time when I sit and play 1/2 no limit, I double or triple my money within the hour. I always sit with $100 at the table and I almost NEVER lose without first doubling my money or tripling it. My greatest problem has been to leave after I do so because I still want to keep playing after just sitting for an hour or so, and then I get a little more lose, seeing more flops,etc., then I end up losing what I won plus what I started with and some. Do you suggest for me to keep playing after I reach my goal, even if it is in less than hour or just leave even if I still want to keep playing?

You have to have income coming in besides piker period if you don’t you don’t stand a chance you also have to be super cheap with money and not play to high advice get a good job career making 5-10 k a month take shots on the side can’t go wrong ..... set your bankroll to never ever lose more then a 1000 a month your welcome

hi friend , what are your thoughts about playing more but lower stakes ? , right now i'm beating nl10 with a good winrate, but on the site i play if i move up the stake i will pay more rake and the players will get probably a lot better , i'm thinking about buying a better monitor and play more tables at nl10 , and play 2 sites at the same time , so , even if my winrate goes down a little bit i will still make more money , basically i'm not sure if i can beat nl25+ :/ , i'm really afraid.

$66.000 - +/- 40% tax = $ 40.000 left and no retirement salary or insurance. Best you can do is play 2 or 3 hours a day next to your 4-5 day per week job.

I think the numbers you pulled of are prob unachievable for over 90% of players and newcomers. Playing 1/2 in under 12months is not going to happen in todays games. Esp PLO with the enormous stdvariation. Running bad for 2-3months , having to move down stakes, mental stress leading to tilt and less grind etc. This is a huge factor. You need to be a trained athlete or need years of experience to challenge these hurdles. People struggle at NL25.. barely breaking even or making a small income. This is GRIND.. day in day out. For most ppl its the lazy route for their life path. Forget the money.. follow your passion.
