I found this video very helpful! I’ve been a mobile dj since 2002. I still do parties for $500 and weddings for $795. Im a dj at a bar this Friday and getting $200 the nice thing is I don’t have to bring my PA system. It’s great to hear what other djs make! I did a gig at at a bar/grill with my PA and lights for $170. I charge low at first just to get my foot in the door. Over the years I’ve found that bar/clubs can be a reliable source of work. Where a weddings is a word of mouth for me. It’s not a guarantee source of money/gig to stop my day job. Keep it up Barr love your channel!!!!

Nice rant. Pretty much agreed with everything. I don't know many full time DJ's. Most, as you stated, do it as a side love/hustle. The Dj's that make stupid money are also producers. They make music. I think the money maker for mobile cats is being a business owner with multi ops. That way you can do three weddings at once. Takes time to build and has to be a labor of love especially in the beginning. Multi op is the money maker if a six figure income is what you're after. A rich man once said "I'd rather get a small percentage of a hundred peoples efforts than 100% of my own". My 2 stupid cents.

Something you said early on really resonated with me. Too many guys try to be the "everything" DJ. I figured out early on in my career (?) that I was TERRIBLE at school dances. I mean just rotten awful. But rather than lose out on the money, I have still managed to keep the clients. I have a pretty strong network of other DJs around me, and we ALL share gigs with each other. Of course, we're all good at weddings. We aren't allergic to money. But I have another DJ friend of mine that's great at school dances. On the flip side, he knows he's awful at 50th birthday parties. Being a classic rock guy, I'm GREAT at 50th birthday parties. But we all take a little from each gig just to keep it interesting. I don't comment a lot, but thanks for the work you do.

That actually goes for most musicians. I don't mind having a 9-5 M-F because I mostly DJ at night and weekends. If I get a gig in during those working hours, well I have tons vacation days. So I still get paid from that job, plus the DJ gig. Plus medical benefits! I see that a lot of musicians and DJ have bar or waiter jobs which suck! Work in something with day hours (no weekends) and benefits. Life is better that way. Plus I DJ my companies holiday parties! $$$$

I charge $100/hour at 4 hour min., for just being a DJ or sound engineer. If you want me to bring any equipment other than my laptop and headphones, that's when the prices go up. If I DJ for a music artist performance then it's $150 per set plus $50 for rehearsals.

Hard facts and 100% true. People consider me a full time DJ but the truth is I have multiple sources of income. I tutor, I repair equipment, I program DMX lighting and I'm an electrician hooking up distro's at the local dinner theater for touring acts and productions. I'm in the entertainment business and I love it. I've also lived by "it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep". Great video Barr

Good point B. Theres alot of Djs here in Cali where I live and theres so many of them charging dirt cheap. Cheap Equipment, cheap prices and the skills suck. So Im always up to date on everything. I have 4 sites that I market my business and Im always looking for new ways to improve my business. I don't Dj full time because I have another business to run. When I first started in 85 I did alot of gigs for free and had to go by referrals. Now everything is on the internet now.

Fun gig, lots of work, so I kept my dayjob. Do a couple small gigs and events for fun. Not setup to do big gigs. It would be a big pay cut to DJ full time. Only had 7 events last year and they were all productions, not a DJ. Brought the controller for the ability to play requests between live acts and bands. Did not want to attempt to steal the show. Just played the intermissions.

I just wanted to chime in on this. I own a multi-op company and we don't quite charge 2350 or even $2000 for a wedding. We charge barely half that and most DJs frown upon us being "cheaper". I honestly do make 6 figures and yes much of it goes to expenses. We charge well under 1,000 for parties but we do 500 events a year and having other guys do the work and you pocket the booking fees and rent out the gear does make a lot of money. Solo full time guys definitely make 40-60 grand a year and you're right on that. I feel bad that multi-ops get a lot of crap about the under cutting but if we do 10 events in a week at 300-500 per party we're turning a profit instead of one event for $2000. Good video and maybe brides and grooms need to see that breakdown LOL

Bayardo, great stuff and not stepping on your toes, just want to say this to all the DJ's in comment section saying they're getting all these low paying gigs. 1- Network your ass off (In order to increase ones NET-WORTH, you must NET-WORK!) 2- Never leave your house without at least 10 business cards (Don't have any? Hit up a site like Vistaprint.com) 3- Learn how to properly market, promote and advertise your business (The day you stop learning is the day you die) and 4- Invest wisely over investing the coolest must have gear (What good is having a mixer that is as much as a mortgage payment and you're not getting a return on your investment). Apply these 4 tips and watch how a quantity of gigs, becomes quality paying gigs.

Spoken like a true professional. I agree about focusing on a certain market but there is no reason why DJs can't specialalize in at least the big 2. For us in the Northeast that would be Weddings and Mitzvahs or Sweet 16. It's the only way to bring the Net profit over 100k +.

Excellent video sir!! I love the information and insight you provided. I also saw part I of this video that was great as well. I am still trying to get my DJ services off the ground and I want to mainly do weddings. I did a wedding back on December 21st , 2019 and that was mainly through friends of my wife, but it was still a great experience!! I think I may start hosting my own events to get my name out there more and I feel better about not charging for them because you made a great point about charging for lifetime events versus other types of events such as birthdays. I can demonstrate what I can bring to a party by just doing my own showcase. Keep up the great posts my man!! God bless you and God Bless the United States of America!! :-)

Who expects, realistically, to make 'full time' money for part time work? yes, a wedding is 7 hours of your time, and there is a lot more time involved, but even if you have 2 weddings a weekend that's not 40 hours of work. Add in seasonal issues - i'm in PA and may-oct there are lots of weddings...nov to april not nearly as many events. It's normal to not work at for 2-3 months out of that.

Another insightful video DjBarr.. good job... Lot of people nowadays will pick quantity over quality....what I mean by that is there's a lot of quantity in the DJ business out there nowadays that will do the $400 weddings (total) so their options are a lot more than it used to be 15 years ago or so.. DJ's coming out of the woodwork right now.... but unfortunately sad but true they never figure it out that they get what they pay for till the end...

What I really want to know, is your KZfaq Channel monetized? If Yes, how much do you make from your KZfaq Channel, it can be a ballpark figure. I am a Part Time DJ, I make more money at my corporate job than if I would to be a Full Time DJ. What about Multi-Ops like Posh, how much do they pull in each year, and how much does Posh pay a DJ for a 4 Hour Wedding? I like to know I have options if I decide to DJ Full Time or start a multi op in the future.

Hi, I like your outlook on the Biz., the info is good, we seem to follow the same ideas on gigs, good solid party. I find some DJ's worry more about the money and not the young couple asking you to give them a wonderful wedding day. My partner was following Ricky Webb, what a cocky schmucks he is. I will continue to follow you. We run part time, so I don't see us getting into the Utube thing. Have a great day. Ed Iron Beats Entertainment, Nashua, NH

You not kidding about the stupid factor. Also... Your time is valuable. The extras set you apart and you should always be working to improve yourself too, so they have to go with you because you are not like the next guy. IMO anyone that complains about loosing to the cheap guy is prob not spending enough time to make themselves look like they are worth it. I look at you and you are first class all the way down to your suit. Clients that are paying big bucks want to feel like they are getting what they pay for. In my market, brides ask about backup systems a lot. The fact that I started as a sound co and have inventory of equipment speaks volumes and I always carry 3 ways to make music so they feel secure that the music won’t stop. So if your out partying in your spare time and not spending time working on your own biz you really have no one to blame but the guy in the mirror. That’s my 2 cents and we’ll spoken DJB!

Hi Bayardo I hope this doesn't seem like a stupid question but I believe from watching your videos that you would do a lot more gigs then 40 a year. I have often seen you document weekends where you have played 2 or 3 gigs in a weekend. Great video by the way!

@@djbluesilver oh i know :), i am just saying if people are claiming all DJ's are millionaires, that's not true, There is only a handful whom are just been DJ's. The rest of us as Barr pointed out will only make that figure or around about that in North America. that being said Barrs figures are in a very in demand area, In Toronto its a different beast, and breaking in to 1000 it self is a big feat.
