Really appreciate the video Doug, interesting stuff! I'm a teacher for a job and play some poker on the side. I don't do bad but couldn't very well live on a net of $400 a month now can I? My job pays all expenses and allows me to save a bit so I mostly just play poker for the joy of the game. And the profit (somewhat consistently $4000-5000 a year) goes to a fantastic holiday over the summer and a romantic weekend around the Xmas time. I used to envy players that just make crazy stacks (i don't have the highstakes experience like you do, obv) but the more I learn, the more I'm okay with where I've settled in here. Play poker for as long as it's fun and burn off the profits in the sun =D Have a good one Doug, and whoever else reads this!

A mate of mine actually said exactly that to me just last week... However.... my mate doesn't play himself and got his "information" listening to Bull-zerian bragging on various non-poker podcasts and chat shows. He just wanted to join in a conversation some friends and I were having about poker and that was the only name he knew. We explained to him how DB is like one of these arseholes you see nowadays who inherits a shit load of cash from his daddy then uses it to convince total morons he's some kind of financial genius, rather than the tacky, self promoting narcissist clown on an ego trip he really is, in order to exploit them for his own gain and maybe get to live a nice house in Washington for 4 to 8 years before they realise what a dick he really is..... You know the type.

I should have reworded. He went on a tilt and lost a ton of money, in the proximity of 18 million, was never 18 mill in debt per se, as he's a fantastic player and made quite a lot of money over his career. His tilt was what led him to take time away from poker. He explains in this article/interview a lot better than I could! www.pokernews.com/news/2016/11/interview-gus-hansen-reenters-the-gambling-world-26234.htm

Doug very well said, I have been bankrolling several pros for the last 10 yrs or so and I must say I have done extremely well! I been quite lucky although most of my winning came through my decisions on who to use, what game or buy in. No names mentioned but you know as well as I do there are many pro's who couldn't afford a cup of coffee! Bankroll and money management is the key! Just like any other business you have to keep your overhead down! Excellent video Doug and happy to see you being honest on what the real world of Poker is really about! So many young bucks think its easy and its far from that! Times have changed, players are different, computers and websites along with Live Poker games (Seeing hands & action) have changed the game! This is not my real screen name, I am certain you know me but that doesn't matter, Keep up the good work Doug!

Richest online cash game players are probably PLO players. Ben, Jeans, Sauce to name a few. Jeans and Sauce both made 5M according to highstakesdb. Now that's not all of their volume, but let's just go by that number. Ben86 made probably a little bit more since he has been on top for a long time at PLO cash. Can't imagine NLHE cash players putting in much more volume than that honestly and win rates were probably smaller. Saying OTB made 5-10M is quite ambitious. It's closer to 5 than 10 honestly. Same for someone like Trueteller, who is a true NLHE cash grinder.

Just check their stats on shark scope, lots of guys everywhere making money in tournaments. You're definitely correct in saying that most, do lose, but I think most of the people losing are because they simply can't commit the time that some doing it for a living does. If you're doing it for a living the variance becomes a massive edge vs the come and go players which definitely make up the field. I think if you commit to it as your job and you have some good discipline, esp when it comes to managing your bankroll, playing within your means, and correcting tilts, you're going to make money playing tournaments in the long, you just need the odd top 3 or 4 that comes along with hot runs of cards.

Well if I may... I don't know what the expenses are in US. but, I'm from Poland and f.e. at the moment to be a winning player you don't need to player higher than NL50 (where you still have the edge over other players) if you're making around 4bb/100 hands and playing around 1 mln hands / year you earn around $20.000 counting the denomination it's around 80.000 - 100.000 PLN. So it's between 6.500 - 8.500 PLN / month... If you compare the earnings with our country avarage income around 4.000 PLN gross, you're quite good money... and the cost of living here aren't so big after all... f.e. to rent a flat in Warsaw, let's say 2 bed room 1 day room kitchen and bathroom, in a good location, you'll find one for around 3.000 - 5.000 PLN / month. If you would like to buy a flat like this, you need around 400.000 - 500.000 PLN... If, you'll be looking for a 2 room studio flat (bed room, dayroom opened to kitchen, bathroom) you can have one eaven for arounf 1.500 PLN - 2.000 PLN/ month. So in general, looking at the earnings in a perspective of US citizen, yeah the stakes are rigged and hard... but according to countries in cetral europe (Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, etc.) you're making quite good money eaven when you play only mid stakes... and still i didn't counted rakeback... :)... But it is true, that if you want to be a well known poker pro, you still need to look at it your way :)... never the less great Vlog...

Hillarious! I discuss poker a lot with my viewers and the most common question is how much luck poker involves? If you were up for it, I'd love to play you heads up in a best of 3 or 5 to show that in the short run it's a lot of luck involved even if we all know I'd be crushed in the long run (I'm a former poker, now casino player). You could name the stakes but please don't make it to brutal.

Hi Doug, I have the rare perspective of being a former low/mid stakes professional. Phatbluntman and Canufrontme on full tilt and poker stars (just so ppl know i'm not BSing, they can look up my profits online). I feel like making any kind of reasonable profit to support a living was ridiculously hard. With cash games, or large MTT's, it's almost impossible for anyone to establish a consistent income, no matter how good you are. Even elite pros who've bagged massive MTT wins, can go YEARS without any meaningful profit. I think Sit n Go's were the most consistent steady form of income, and even then, it was such a grind just to make a solid profit week to week. When you move up in stakes, you have to deal with harder competition AND greater swings in your bankroll. The poker economy also has gone to shit since Black Friday. There just simply aren't any fish anymore. The seas have dried up. Most times nowadays, you're sitting with all regulars, and it just becomes a matter of who's running well that day, and nobody's making money off of anybody. You need like, 30-40 fish per solid pro just for that pro to make enough money to sustain any form of meaningful lifestyle.

One of the most informative and interesting videos ever on poker. It answers a question I had of how a player can lose a cool million dollars in a high stakes televised cash game. You would need to be fantastically wealthy to drop that and walk away nonchalant *_or as I now understand have a team backers_*

Hi i really enjoyed today's video. (keep up the daily uploads btw). At the end of the video you talked about how most people obviously lose or break even. It would be nice if you made a video about how to get to the top/good or how you got so 1337 at the game. Just a video suggestion, don't kill me for asking, plz i don't wanna die ):

Hey Doug, I really like your approach. I work in Finance and figured most of what you expose here. Yes people tend to believe poker players make ALOT more than they actually do. The real successful poker players actually have sponsorships and make money out of those sponsorships. I think its a misconception that is important to expose for younger kids dreaming of being poker pros. You'll have much more success if you spend your time studying poker, studying for school and having good grades...

I live in L.A. area in my opinion no body beats live low limit games because the rake is to high. (Excluding props) So I'm just pulling this number out of my a**. But would it be reasonable to say that out of all the players that play live games in L.A. and cover there own rake. That less than 1% win money or break even? 1 out of 10,000 make $30,000 to $50,000 a year? And 1 out of 100,000 make over $50,000 a year?

But then you have to play in a supposedly much tougher field and your edge goes down the drain....i mean to sell for certain tourneys sure makes sense, but in general shouldn't it be more profitable(also thinking about the learning curve) to just play within your bankroll ? selling without markup makes no sense, I think (given there are enough tournaments to play) On the other hand, if I was fedor I sure as hell would sell with whatever absurd markup is possible with his recent results and potential stakers that underestimate variance and make mincashing the Highrollers very valuable.

Guaranteed that if all poker players paid with their own money 100% of the time, they'd all be broke! You don't see casinos selling books telling you how to beat them?? So why would a poker player want you to better yourself? Also tired of seeing so and so won x amount over their career. Let's see the NET amount after buy ins, taxes, paying others back, etc. And let's not count other ventures like selling books and such. Almost certain, most are losers.

Doug is absolutely right. The rake $ucks. Literally. Back in the day, there was no house dealer, and the card-room rake on 2,5 limit was $2.00/ half hour per player. A full table lost ~$50/hr, including tokes to the house-man. Now change that to house-dealer, 10% rake up to $3.00 hand, plus tokes, and ~$150/hr disappears from the same table. That's an extra $10/hr per player, GONE. If you were a grinder making $15/hr, you just took a 2/3 pay cut. At that rate, you now have two choices 1) get a "real" job, or 2) higher stakes, where the rake % is also lower. You damn sure better have a consistent A-game and disciplined spending to survive that route. Even so, you're back to grinding, and. Grinding IS a real job. You want to win big at poker...be the house!

If you only looking on online poker tournament databases you will not get far, matter of fact u wont get anywhere...biggest money is made in live highstakes cash games (currently in Macau) and there is no stats about it online, only the guys who play in those games know. If the guy brings 1.5mil$ at the table (Robel in Super High Roller Cash Game) he has to be in 10mil $ group imo same goes for Colman. Maybe doug can confirm it for us :D
