Good info, that's interesting to hear. I'm Australian and my first full time job in 2015 as a junior dev was AUD$50k or around £24k at the time. I've since moved to the UK and just landed a job at the senior level for £115k.

first full time dev job seems fine at 24k, depending on what skills they're asking of course.. especially 2015. A lot has changed since then.. issue we have in the UK is now shelf stacker is on around 21k.. which i totally understand is good because people need it to live on.. but its meant inflation of course, so that 24-25k salary is not anywhere near as good as in 2015 now.. but if you're a rock bottom junior learning the tools of the trade until moving on very soon, then it is not too bad at all really.

@@joecater894 yeah, I agree. I've 10 years of exp and am currently very disappointed with UK's IT job market. I'm still seeing A LOT of companies trying to hire senior with the same salaries from pre covid times. It's like some companies are stuck in time or sleeping under a rock and haven't seem how much cost of living has increased in the UK. I'm seriously thinking about leaving this sinking ship.

Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve been learning to code by myself but never had a job in tech. I recently got an offer of a part-time computer science masters degree. (I have a nonSTEM degree already). Do you think it’s worth doing it and then try to get a graduate scheme job in two years? Or just try to get a developer job in a small company for two years and then possibly jump to a bigger company?

Don't waste your money on a masters lol. Not right now anyway. I would recommend offering your services privately on fiver and other sites and contracting at the same time. I find grad schemes a bit confusing. I've been working in Finance for the past 12 years but have an undergrad and master's degree in Economics and Finance I did before then. I am now self learning to become a fullstack dev. Does that rule me out when it comes to grad schemes?
@sapphyx26
@sapphyx26 4 ай бұрын
you don't learn to become a "full stack dev". It doesn't happen. You gain experience that turns you into one. And frankly, in this day and age, < 5% of all developers could ever be classified as "full stack", going from registers on a CPU all the way to a web browser.

@@sneigee you can get cheap apartment in the UK.. not London though. A little trick I thought of, which I'll never ever do because I'll probably never live in London, but I often thought.. might be able to get mooring for a boat.. buy a boat for around 20-30k.. and live in it. For example 60 foot mooring in a popular London dockland marina would cost around £6,000 per annum and 28-29k would get quite a nice little cheap sailing boat with cabin. Apparently seems some other people have had a similar idea and have bought canal boats, doing something similar. Of course, the other option is commute from a town in the south, which I can tell you from experience is roughly 65 pounds / day... something like that.. depending. But takes a long time.. Bristol is a good place to go.. or Cambridge, both for tech jobs.

I am a software engineer here. I have the CS degree. If I am honest with you, in the UK, no one asked me for my degree. What they usually do is to ask algorithm questions during the interview. So it is more to show that you know the subject than having the degree. In Spain thou (I'm from there), it is the first thing that they ask. About the maths, generally speaking, you don't need them. They don't hurt, either.
