costco receives x100 foot traffic a dealership does, the coffee or now a days bottled products and automated coffee makers are x10 easier to use than having to buy equipment and space for hotdog. What analogy, if you can't find good analogy then just don't say it. People who liked this comment are just as bad for thinking of this. Better comparison would be amazon kindle which they have stated they lose money on but hope for people to use it to buy more products on the kindle.

I work for Costco in California and since fast food prices have gone up so much in this state. Our food court is triple busy compared to last year. The lines practically never end after spending so much money on groceries most families can't afford to go to McDonald's or Burger King so it's like you could have something from the food court when we're done shopping or we're just going home.

One of the Costcos I go to that has an outside food court now requires people scan their membership card to buy anything from the food court. @@williamkreth The point of a loss leader isn't to make money directly. They're not. It's even in the name. However, the point is to be a selling point to customers because it's a really good deal, and you'll recoup your money in other products. This is a common marketing strategy, with some examples being (fittingly) hot dogs - the sausages are typically sold at a loss to make money on the pricier hot dog buns.
@godaistudios
@godaistudios Ай бұрын
Agreed. It's a low profit item, but in volume, it adds up. Yes, I suppose you can call it a "loss" when the market would tell you to set it a higher price point due to margins from an economic standpoint, but Costco isn't paying more for the product than it sells it for.
@machintrucGaming
@machintrucGaming Ай бұрын
Does the 1.50 includes taxes ? If so with 80 cents of material cost that leaves something like 40 cents for labor storage... add in a employee to make the hotdogs, let's say 1 hotdogs per minute, that's 33 cents of labor per dog leaving them just 7 cents of margin. Hard to quantify the rest of the cost. But at 1.50 they're likely not making money on it anymore
@godaistudios
@godaistudios Ай бұрын
@@machintrucGaming Tax is not included. Also, it won't take a full minute of labor to make a single hot dog. 80 cents of material may be slightly overvaluing the raw materials. My guess is that in terms of profitability, they are making 10 to 15 cents per combo sold, While the margin is extremely low, the greater value is to use it to keep people coming in and buying everything else, as the video demonstrated.

Your analysis is incorrect. You stated that the hot dog and bun cost between .45-.80 cents. A soda cup with refills would be .15 cents max. Just because they can charge over $4.00, doesn’t mean they are losing money by not doing so. Costco is profiting at least 60 cents, so it’s safe to say they made over $100 million in profits off of their hotdog/soda combo.

Most of the ones I've been to in the past couple of years now charge for bread, allow only one free refill on sodas, and charge you more if you use a credit card to pay instead of cash. And note here, restaurant owners/managers/staff: the day you start charging for a glass of water is the day I will avoid your establishment like the plague, and let everyone know my experience. Your estimates are too high , remember they own and make everything in house from scratch (they also own the pig & cow farms where the meat comes from). A single hot dog bun is pennies , that soda again pennies , the hot dog itself .10 (if that) , condiments yup again pennies considering how little people use. Where the larger cost comes from is staff and electricity , but when you break it down to how much time is spent for one single hot dog it too can't be much, .30 or so.
@kameljoe21
@kameljoe21 Ай бұрын
@@James_Ford4815 Yes Costco now owns the hotdog manufacture and even the farms that produce them. Overall the profit is around 20 to 40 cents per hotdog. They make make a good amount of money from the 150 million combos they sell a year. Even at full blown retail you can nearly break even on the hotdog combo. The most expensive things are the cups, soda for the average person. Even when I order from a restaurant supply company with steep discounts I can make a small profit. Keep in mind the contract that it has though its soda vender and the bulk volume they sell gives them huge discounts along with their own cups which should be heavily discounted as well. Even the retail package of the hotdogs state its the same ones they sell at the food court. The break down price of those minus costco's profit of 50% or more because remember they own the farm so the middle man profits are gone which gives them a huge advantage. The other thing cost co makes huge money on is the rotisserie chickens. Though last I heard they increased the price past the 5 dollars. Either way costco owns the farm that provides them as well. I was able to find the locations of these farms several years ago and they are massive. Costco has been slowly investing its money in its food chain and removing the middle man from the cost which brings their profits up a lot more after they pay for said farm. They also make a bulk of their profit from member fees. Keep in mind that every story that Costco makes about loss leader products means more people are going to spend that money in which they will make more profit. Think about it like this. You are at Costco and you say lets gets a combo because you know its a loss leader and while we are at it lets get a chicken because they lose money on it. We are making a profit by doing it. This mentality is the reason why they sell very well in these products. If costco came out with a new product that was cheap at the food court and make it appear like it was a steal of the century they would do very well.

Back in 1964, I work in a beer bar. It only sold beer and pizza. One day the owner happened to drop by while I was making a pepperoni(it was the type of pizza we sold). The owner was giving me a bad time for not putting enough pepperoni on the pizza. I pointed out that our pizza was priced very low compared to pizza joints around town. He said he was in the beer buisness not pizza. He only sold pizza because people bought more beer waiting for and eating their pizza. As long as he didn't lose money on the pizza, it was a loss leader. By the way, the 1964 date is not a typo error. I'm 82 and was in college in 1964. The owner sold the bar. The new owners tried to expand the buisness by having a full menu and selling wine and hard liquor(sp), and ended up bankrupt in about 10 years. They forgot that they were in the beer buisness.

That building was first used to make bubble-canopy helicopters for the military. As a child I remember watching the roll out the new helicopters onto trains and trucks. There still are train tracks that cross Morena Blvd. Ryan Air (think of the Soirit of St. Louis built by Ryan Air) moved in to that facility in the 1960s. In the mid 60s, Ryan Air moved out and Sol Price purchased the entire plant for Price Club. It is only leased to Costco and is wholly owned by Price Enterprises.

The bureau of labor saying hot dogs should cost $4 with inflation is hysterical. During art shows, farmers markets and a few other events my friends family sets up a hot dog stand using Kirkland dogs, buns and ketchup/mustard and sell them plus a can of soda for $1.50 and cover all expenses plus lot fees and usually cover about $20/hour for the two people manning the station. The fountain soda plus cup cost about 0.08 and the hot dog + bun and the marginal amount of condiments is likely well under that $0.40 cost considering 36 count of the hot dogs to a normal Costco consumer is $9.99 or $0.27/hot dog...

At the local Sam's Club (which is about two miles from my home, compared to the eight miles drive to the local Costco) the hot dog and 24 oz. cup combo runs $1.50 (plus tax). However, if you want two hot dogs with your order, that second hog dog will cost you an additional $1.30. Not terrible, but it may be an indication of how much of a markup fountain soda drinks are. No one is going to confuse a Sam's Club food stand with a four-star restaurant. Cleanliness in the eating areas can be suspect. One thing for certain -- if Costco or Sam's Club start charging $4.00+ for the hot dog combo (or $2.50+ for their individual drinks), they might as well shut down the food stand in the stores.
@robertpearson7861
@robertpearson7861 Ай бұрын
Yes I have bought the hot dog combo (in fact I do it most times I visit their store). I also frequently buy one of their rotisserie chickens when I'm otherwise shopping at CostCo. And, as I'm sure CostCo intends, I frequently do large amounts of shopping at the same time as I pick up those hot dogs and chickens. So even if CostCo is losing a little on each dog combo (and they could easily be breaking even or even making a small profit) this "loss leader" approach appears to be working for CostCo. NOTE: There are some things I prefer to always buy from CostCo (especially some of their KirkLand branded products). And there are other things I can buy anywhere, but CostCo is often the cheapest place to get them from. And there are even things I almost always buy elsewhere, because CostCo either doesn't sell those items at all or does sell them but at a higher price then other stores. So even though I buy a lot of stuff from CostCo, I'm not a blind "fan boy" that assumes that everything they sell is a good deal for a consumer!
