I am amazed Wanderbots didn't cover it (either for Nextfest or Release) when he covered number 1, did you do a mailout to the YT/Steamers as I only saw 2 I knew in the results ? I worry about DLC any time soon with a typical conversion rate of them, I feel like since you appear to "have something" a better strategy is update the game with bug fixes and minor things while working on a large content drop and use that as an excuse to reach out to all the YT'ers again and do another discount. (too bad you already did a 20% discount because I don't think your next discount will even notify your wish listers)
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 4 ай бұрын
@@shannenmr I reached out to a lot of creators (including Wanderbots) but yeah MG2 didn't get as much coverage as the first one. I had a good attach rate with the DLC in MG1 so I'll likely go for the same strategy. It's still ways to go though and meanwhile I'll push out smaller updates and potentially a bigger update too.
@shannenmr

@@AuroDev I have heard a few of the "Indie" YT'er like Wander and Splatter mention there is currently a lull in new games at the moment, it might be worth reaching out to the ones who didn't cover it (or just everyone) especially if you have a decent content drop, re-balancing pass or say controller support added etc. I assume you are just providing a key in the original email and not making them reply asking for it?
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 4 ай бұрын
@@shannenmr Thank you for the encouragement. I have sent a bunch of different emails to the creators (to the point that I'm going to wait until major new content before trying again), but most are hard to reach or at least get a response from. Splatter actually already made a video about MG2, but there was an issue with the video so he deleted it quite soon after posting. It was a bummer, but I understood his decision.

First of all, congratulations! It's a bit disheartening to see how on average a developer only gets around 40% of what their game generates. I know numbers mean extremely different things when you are trying to run a business, pay the bills, and provide to your family, but in my eyes 8k sales in the first month as an indie is great and you should be proud of yourself. Keep up the good work!
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 22 күн бұрын
Thank you! It's true that the numbers mean different things for different people. 8k in a month is huge for me too, but on Steam the first month is usually a lot lot bigger than the following months and then for most games it just keeps constantly going down so I always try to also consider what the numbers mean for future sales (+ trying not to be optimistic so I won't be let down later on :D).

@AuroDev I watched your video twice, but I still didn't get it. Like your actual income was 30% of the whole gross income? Or I misunderstood it again.
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 4 ай бұрын
@@deanthedev It gets a bit tricky because there are so many steps and some are just estimates. But yeah, for the first month, the estimate for my personal earnings (= not what the company I own gets, but what I as an individual would get) is 35% of the total gross. The percentage will be higher in future as the expenses stay the same while the gross keeps growing. The personal net number is also just a theoretical estimate since I could just a well keep all the money in the company that I own. So it's tricky again because the rules are different depending if the money is on my own personal bank account or if it's in the bank account of the company I own.

I'm very happy to hear the game did well! Your an awesome dev, love the content it really keeps me motivated working on my own stuff seeing someone also going through the indie trials. I was wondering, if you put your games on sale, during either a big sale or just randomly have you noticed significant spikes (I've heard that if you put a game on sale for 20% or more it emails every wishlister). I was wonder that if you do do that would you make a video of it summarizing if there was a spike and how large it was? It's something I'm curious about. Again great video, and great game
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 4 ай бұрын
Thank you, that's great to hear! The sales always result in some sort of spikes. Usually they are small spikes, but some will be bigger. I don't really have any great insight or secret tips on that topic, but basically I think it comes down to the visibility of the sale (is it on front page of Steam), how exclusive it is (are you among 100 games or 1000 games), what your placement is in the sale (is your game the first one that's shown on the sale page or is it on page 5) and what your discount% is. I don't think about it too much and just try to participate in everything I can.

I'm keeping all options open, but I get bored working on the same idea for a long time so I need to switch it up again. I recently released a game with 40 wishlists and by some miracle a crap load of streamers covered it which led to a lot of sales. I think that is the biggest takeaway

Sheesh man. I've had mine out for 4 days short of a month and I've only made 4 sales, 2 of which were returned. Clearly I did everything wrong man. Congrats on the success! And also a big thanks because of your videos I was able to upload and get my game going on steam for a first time ever selling a game.

I am sorry to hear that. I'm sure you learned a lot from the experience though so if you continue making games, the next ones should have better chances of making more sales. It's a hard line of work to make money!

don't lose hope, the fact that you got a game finished and put on steam means you've made it farther than a significant portion of indie game devs. every "failure" is a win if you take the time to learn from it. good luck on your next project!
@DarkParadice

@@AuroDev I did. I always get better project to project. But this was the first time ever trying to sell one. I learned the process, picked up easier ways to do it through your videos for future projects. It is rough though starting out. @BlueJayGaming Appreciate it! Yeah, my next project will for sure learn from this one and hopefully do better. I'm hoping sales is just like the process I had for game design; every project gets better and better so I'm hoping sales do too.

Great numbers! But I guess it depends on a country you live in (basically your expenses). For a Finland with median salary 3.2k euro it's enough to keep you "stable/comfortable with some hopes", for me in Ukraine with median salary 400-500 dollars and much lower expenses on food/apartment etc. those numbers would be super great! Great blog, looking forward for new videos!

I'm not super familiar with the different arrangements like that, but I know some people do that over here. Another trick would be to establish a separate holding company that owns my main company, which would allow to withdraw more money from the company with less taxes. But I don't want to invite more bureaucracy to my life right now. I am still dealing with relatively small sums of money too so the extra hassle does not seem worth it currently.

You mentioned you think the prequel helped boost Mortal Glory 2, any way to tell by how much? If MG2 was a standalone game with a different name, how much lower do you estimate the sales would be? Also, did you see any boost to sales of Mortal Glory 1 with the release of the sequel? Congrats on the successful launch!
@AuroDev
@AuroDev 4 ай бұрын
Thank you! Hard to say for sure how much being a sequel helped. I can see that ~36% of the players own MG1 so there are a lot of new players also. Could be that getting the early boost from MG1 fans helped trigger the algorithm though. I had MG1 deeply discounted during the launch so I got a lot of sales for MG1 too but hard to say how many were thanks to MG2.

Chambers of Devious Design is a great game so you should not feel like it was a faliure at all. It's a shame it didn't sell but it's one of the best board game conversions ever made. Thank you, that's really nice to hear! I also really like the game. Technically & design-wise I achieved exactly what I was aiming for. But unfortunately since making games is my only income source now, I need to heavily consider the financial aspect also. Financially it was basically like working a minimum wage job for 17 months. But I still learned a lot from it and it's always nice to hear when people like it so at least it's not all bad!
