How much horsepower can a WRX CVT handle? Can you tune a WRX CVT? What are the modification options for a WRX CVT?
This video goes over how much power and torque a WRX CVT can handle before transmission failure. It discusses WRX CVT tuning and modification. I talk about CVT transmission coolers and CVT torque converters.

I just bought a 2016 Subaru WRX cvt and I was skeptical at first but after taking it on a test drive I was sold right away. (Especially since where I live in Cali the traffic is crazy and not beneficial to have a stick just for cool guy points) the car has great takeoff speed and it pulls super hard on the freeways, I love my CVT WRX and real glad I found your channel man keep up the love for the CVT’s!

@@AutoEnthusiast You know it doesn't have to be a CVT, it could be a traditional transmission.. CVT's should be avoided at all times. If a car has CVT, turn around and walk away. The fact that Subaru put in a CVT in a WRX says a lot about how much they care.

I love my wrx cvt. But I learned pretty quickly to not go around telling other subie fans it's a cvt. I deliver pizza for 1 of my jobs and I just didn't want to be shifting, but I still wanted a wrx with the power, 265+ HP is plenty for me and it's more about control, that's why subaru is my favorite in the first place. I average about 35 mpg on my commute. 90% highway at 65 to 70 mph with minimal city driving on either end. If I run the fuel tank down low I can easily get 500+ miles out of a fill up.

What do you mean slip? Like the trans slipping? Because that is already damage leading towards failure.
@subieseduction1377

I mean wheel slip actually. From what I understand, the CVT doesn’t allow for wheel slip for continuous length in time. Subaru has recognized this and added something that will prevent cars that have cvts from prolonged wheel slip now. I believe I saw this in a Subaru AWD video recently that explains it much better than I can. If I can find it, I’ll send it your way.

I get rods are one reason, any others? And finally, change the channel name to what? Something like, 'Subaru Enthusiast' or 'WRX Enthusiast'? Or are you looking for something altogether different?

Yeah, it is on the list of video ideas. Mainly for the 2015+ it's the rods. As for the name, thanks for sticking through to the end of the video. i am thinking potentially of just making the channel name my name? I don't want to narrow myself to just WRX's as I am hoping to add cars to the channel.

What I've wanted to know ever since I got my '15 CVT: What did Subaru do to get 296 HP and 295 lb ft. out of the WRX S4? In five years I have yet to find any information on it. I know the engine is more than capable to produce the power. I'm just curious what they either did to their CVT, or if it's in fact a different CVT entirely. I mean, they ONLY offered the S4 with the CVT. They must have known something that COBB didn't.

@Gunnberg85
@Gunnberg85 3 жыл бұрын
@@dimensionjester9052 Agreed. It would have added to the manufacturing costs since they can share the CVT across the other platforms more easily as opposed to the dual clutch. It's a shame really. And yes, according to COBB, instant torque is the bane of that transmission's existence. Most tuners go for off-the-line power, and are most likely to kill it. You're definitely doing it right. I took my first transmission out at 18k miles making at that time 310hp and 340tq with a huge boost spike lol. After that i tried to change the boost onset to something more subtle but at 32k miles i blew my second one and at that time subaru declined my warranty and i had to pay for a new one out of pocket and thank FUCK my local junkyard had one for $2400 so i didnt have to pay 10k i also did all the work myself and put a new oem converter with the upgraded needle bearings. At this time i said fuck the CVT because i wanted more and i moved on. When i was selling it was the whole uproar about buy this or that converter etc but nah fuck all that, imo the platform is dog shit IF your looking to make real power. If your happy with 300/300 then its a great time. Still can taste that CVT and it made me ditch subaru all together after owning 8 of them.

At the end of the day, people need to stop being elistist when it comes to cars, like a manual will fit some people's needs and cvt will fit another persons, some people are hella super into cars, some people like cars alot but not to the point where they'll get into manuals, some live in cities with tons of traffic and don't want to deal with shifting, some don't mind it. I lease a WRX CVT and honnestly it's quick and fun; but Subaru is def making a mistake by not using a dual clutch. Why most people prefer manual cars (I do, they are awesome to drive), the people who choose automatic cars will want the fastest ones. All the fast automatic cars right now have dual clutch, and if you look at the Golf R, the GTI or the Audi S3, they are all quicker on a 0-60 time than the manual option. The CVT however is not (the manual WRX do a quicker 0-60). On top of that CVT owners are limited in the amount of power/ mods they can add to the car, so it makes it even less attractive. If they could only use a dsg transmission like the Golf R, it would make it quicker than the manual and more fun to customize.For me, even if it's fun to drive, a CVT on this car is just a bad choice.

It depends on the specific transmission. The better CVTs can handle more power and torque, others can’t like Nissan CVTs. Stick with a Honda one or Toyota, they will last. It’s sudden torque which kills these transmissions but as long as you drive normally then they can last just fine.

Subaru needs a new automatic. Maybe it wouldn't sell super good to their base but man are CVT very meh. I wish Subaru or Honda would get a good automatic like VW/Audis have.

My CVT couldn’t handle an intake and COBB port just so you know. I bought my car brand knew in rinebek New York. And... that car couldn’t handle any mods at all, it’s in the shop rn and I didn’t make 230 HP .__.
