How Much Power Does the President Really Have?

We sometimes say the president is the most powerful man in the world, but this isn't really the case. The president of the United States of America must work within a system of checks and balances that is intentionally inefficient and forces compromise so that no one person can take too much power. George Edwards, professor of political science, explains the limits of the president's power. A president's promises on the campaign trail often get deflated after they get into office because they have to contend with congress. Party politics often makes it difficult or impossible to compromise, as senator Lindsey Graham found out the hard way when he got trampled by an elephant.

The problem with this is once both sides know that they have to compromise they can deliberately overshoot their goals on the initial drafting of an idea and then 'compromise' down to what they originally had wanted in the first place.

Very good video. Many people often like to think that the executive has total control and that's not the case. I am not only saying this because it's true but also to ease people's fears of...well you probably already know who it is.

Thank you! Great animation and I love the peanut butter and jelly metaphor! I hope this video gets a *lot* more views as the 2016 presidential campaign goes into full swing. It may help to allay some of the fears of a (Dog forbid) Trump presidency. Without congressional support, the most "powerful" action he'll be able to take is to sign a bunch of insane "executive orders," most, if not all, of which will require funding to implement, funding that the House will deny him. So the worst that can happen, as I see it, is that as Americans, we will be the laughing stock of the rest of the civilized world for four years, but what else is new?

I understand what they mean by "compromise". What really should be done is to have one set goal for the country and do it. Now that one set goal is not, just one thing. That one set goal is what the business is and doing the things from that goal. If you get two parties, that don't agree on anything, to "compromise". It can have dangerous effects.

Yeah there are things like executive orders where one branch tries to step out of the bounds of their Constitutional duties. Those things worry me the most. But in general the balance of powers works and should be maintained.

I think it's important to remember that presidents also can push things through with executive orders. On top of that although federal agencies like the EPA, FBI, CIA and arguably the most important, the federal reserve, are meant to be run independently, alot of the most effective presidents have found ways to make them work for him, usually through key appointments or by tampering with the budget.

I feel like executive orders just kind of bypass a lot of this system though? We have a similar thing here in Canada called an OIC. Or you can always manufacture an emergency and take emergency power/martial law. It seems the president has a lot more power than they let on in this video.

I tend to agree...the executive branch uses the power of regulation and fiat more than the legislative branch could enact laws, which is what the video depicts. At least in the current federal government which has more bureaus, offices, agencies than the original constitution ever envisioned the federal government becoming (aka. the enumerated rights).

That would require a 2/3 vote in both houses of Congress. It is very unlikely either party could gain a 2/3 majority in both chambers anytime soon. It would be a fine thing if the Democrats won majorites in both houses of Congress this year and more than justifiable considering how reckless the GOP has become, but it remains unlikely.
@DavidJGillCA

That's just it - the right-wing crack-pots of America regularly show that they don't understand the basics of how our government works. It would require a 2/3 vote in both houses of Congress to amend the Constitution. That's not going to happen.

Also only about 40% of voting age Americans vote, and only 40% of those voters can be considered to be casting an educated vote, so basically only about 15% of voting age Americans are going to actually consider why they should vote for who, not "I like that guy's mustache, I'll vote for him!"

The president is really just a spokesperson. You can’t anything done on your own, due to checks and balances. Therefore, any sort of change is probably impossible without your political team mates in the houses. People think too differently from each other.

This totally sidesteps the powers that the US President actually DOES have, and frankly, it's terrifying and I don't understand why anyone OTHER than a sociopathic narcissist would want the job. I'm talking about the military, the NDA, and foreign policy in general. Leaving aside actual troop deployment, just on the margins on a given day of making decisions and signing stuff, 10,000 people over here, 20,000 over there, if you track it all statistically, will die, or live. You just have your hands on such giant levers - pick your metaphor - that you affect so many people, there are gallons of blood on your hands pretty much your first couple of weeks in office, depending on how quickly you settle in, figure out where the light switches are in the West Wing, etc. Even Jimmy Freaking Carter - was there ever a nicer, more conventionally MORAL President? - had his E. Timor.
