How much protein do you need per day?
Well, it depends on lots of things.
If you are training and trying to build muscle, it makes sense you need more than someone who isn't training and isn't trying to build muscle.
If you are trying in a calorie deficit you may need more protein again versus during a calorie surplus.
Even your age can make a difference, as older people may have a degree of 'anabolic resistance'.
Let's discuss the science.

Im so confused on how much protein to gain muscle. So many different people are saying about 1 gram per pound of bw. 1.6 grams of protein per KG would be alot easier for me to maintain the diet.

If you do better with 1.6 grams per kg than with 1 per pound than stick with 1.6

Yeah the research seems to show that gains in muscle aren’t any higher if you exceed 1.6g of protein per kg of body weight, me at 75kg body weight puts me at 120g of protein which would be easy to hit across 4 meals

Funnily enough, beyond 1.4 g/kg didn't show benefit, they just rounded it up to be sure.

If my goal is to just lose weight, would I decrease protein as I go down?

Getting high protein is hard get I eat 2 cans of tuna for my 1st meal that's only 40 g eggs barely have any, also I want to try to gain muscle while losing weight so I don't want to eat too much maybe that's my problem, I know about powder but I'm broke so cant buy

Do you have a protein powder that you prefer? One that is cleanest?

Thanks for this Ben. So is it your bodyweight in KGs X 0.8 rather than your body weight in LBS? that may be a lot better to achieve if that's the case. I see a lot of other videos where you multiply it by your body weight in LBS.

Is that per kg ideal body weight? Or current body weight even if you are overweight?

The advice I heard recently was if you aim for 1.6g of protein per kg of current bodyweight, even if your goal is to lose weight it’s a good intake to aim for Thinking of very overweight people who are trying to lose weight, say they weigh 150kg maybe, with the aim of eating 240g of protein per day, that’s way beyond what their body will require for their muscle mass, but the high volume of protein can be really beneficial through the satiating effects of consuming protein and aid in their weight loss too Just something to think about but not something that you or anybody else NEEDS to do to be healthy

Yeah, it only makes sense as an ideal bodyweight, as your fat doesn't really need to be fueled by protein.

So there is a correlation between the intensity/frequency of strength training and amount of protein per day.. Say I want to build lean mass and use the 1,6x formula, shouldn’t my training be exactly aligned to this? If yes, how can you know that you are not „waisting“ your protein intake?
@ondrej1893

Nobody knows exactly for your training...it's not really an exact science right now. 1.2 probably enough if you are chill about the speed of your eventual results, 1.4 very good, 1.6 to be sure. 1.8 in severe calorie deficit while bodybuilding. And all this is g/kg ideal bodyweight, not current bodyweight.

Mike Mentzer always lauded the 0.8 g/kg. Studies haven't shown any higher than 0.7-0.82g/lb to have any benefits. I personally believe you can get 90% of your gains with a miniscule amount of protein.

I am confused, you said studies haven’t shown any higher than 0.7-0.82g/lb to have any benefits”, on a video that shows two RCTs and three review papers

@@BenCarpenter I should've phrased it better. I mean significant enough benefits to make it worth it for me. There seems to be diminishing returns the higher the protein intake goes.

Just keep in mind 0.8g/kg and 0.8g/lb will be quite different 0.8g/lb would be equivalent to around 1.75g/kg if I’ve calculated correctly
