Its really time for animals to not be marketed as something humans have to have. Most animals are locked up and crated all day and paid no attention to. I have pets and they live a great life- but I feel for people that get them and cage them all day- or rather I feel for their pets. I have taught my kids that animals are not to be owned- if you ge a dog, they need a mate/friend/pal. But once my dogs pass I will no longer participate in the pet industry- and I encourage many people that do not need a dog (emotional support animals, etc.) that you CAN go without one- it is OK!

@@Goldenretrieverfam When I got my dog he was a rescue dog. The person that rescued him crated him. The previous owners crated him. I never crated him and never understood why they did. He's a big dog so he can hold it, doesn't make accidents in the house, doesn't chew up anything.....why the heck was this dog crated? From day 1 I didn't crate him. I allowed him full access to the house just like I got from day 1. I gave him the opportunity and he never tried to take advantage of it. As you said, too many people have dogs that shouldn't have dogs. I don't understand getting a dog to lock them up in a cage 90% of the time, or to a tree in the back yard.

The answer is: Pet insurance. When a dog is a puppy or younger age it saves owners thousands of unnecessary dollars they don’t have! $10-$100 a month vs shelling out 3k to 5k in one day, for emergency surgery is a BIG difference!

I started laughing when Dave talked about having a "dog with papers." The most money I've ever spent on a pet's medical bills (north of $2000) was for a Persian that I bought from a collector (not an actual breeder) because I was young and dumb and he was a cute little ball of orange kitten fluff. His sweet personality was a big reason why I kept him as long as I did.

If it's a minor surgery or a procedure to the point you're thinking about euthanasia over $1000 vet bill...you most likely shouldn't own a pet in the first place. If you're living paycheck to paycheck or a vet bill/expense is going to wipe out your emergency fund, you shouldn't own a pet. People need to do a lot more research and look at their financial picture before taking on responsibility, but most pet owners think all they need to do is provide a roof, toys, water, and food and that's it. The first time a vet bill over $100 comes up they panic.

For me, my dog is my child. Like any parent, I’d pay (and have paid way more than just a couple grand) whatever price if there was any chance my dog’s quality of life was still good. That’s the responsibility I knew I’d take on from day one and should be the same for any pet owner. I always knew the possible costs at any age, especially old age. And my dog has been way more worth any price I’ve ever paid. I found a vet I trust completely who also trusts me in return. If you don’t trust your vet for good reason, then find another. If you believe all vets are there only for a paycheck then you might want to seek a professional who can help you with trust issues. And if you can afford it, get pet insurance (or set aside money for unexpected costs like this) like you do for you and the rest of your family.

In the old days, vets would come right out and tell you if the right thing to do was to put down the dog/cat. My experience now with vets is they want people to go broke with all kinds of expensive treatments even on an old and dying pet. It's ridiculous and I wish I could have some of my older vets who were in the business to help animals instead of making big incomes. It's gotten to the point that I almost don't want to have pets anymore because the vet bills are so GD high. That probably won't happen, but I am training myself to say "No" to a lot of these expensive procedure and treatments. Whenever I take my pets to the vet for checkups and whatnot, all I see are $$ signs.

@@tracyalbino-daggett4032 There are definitely people who want old unwanted animals. But for every one person who falls into that category there are 7 people who don't want their old animal for whatever reason. Everyone who is thinking of getting a dog, be advised (GET THEM PET INSURANCE ASAP)! The best time to get insurance is when they are younger! The younger you get the insurance, the cheaper the monthly cost!! $10-$70 per month. Of course, older dogs will cost more money per month! $70-$100 per month. All plans will include coverage for vet visits, dental checkups and surgery costs! Always look into which one fits you and your pet best!

I think it's a legitimate question. What if the dollar amount was higher, say $15-20k? Asking financial advice regarding where the limit should be drawn is fair. I don't think the caller had any bad intent here; he clearly cared for his dog and was going to spend the money (actually--he's in the comments here, and he paid for the procedure).

@Adam Blazak - Initiating a similar conversation with my wife ... "can we discuss how much we are willing to spend on Chloe" ... resulted in a divorce a couple years later. She said I told her NOT to spend money and decided I was dangerous and a threat. Her actions also contaminated my relationship with my youngest daughter and as a result I no longer have ANY contact with my grandchildren. Its fantastic that Truffles has made a full recovery and once again enjoying her life. But as logical and grown-up as that question might seem, there are lunatics out there and create unbelievable scenarios in their mind and then go down a path a devastation.

I hope this guy never gets a chance to home an animal ever again, he clearly isn’t up for the financial burden that can sometimes come with having a pet. I feel so sorry for this poor dog. To be devoted to his owner and this POS be so flippant as to decide to kill it when eye removal would remedy this issue, to me, is disgusting. Yes, dog is 9 yrs, but small dogs generally have a longer life expectancy than larger breeds, so 9 is not all that old. IMO, only when there is not one single option left to treat and/or relieve pain, should putting them down be an option. If you, yourself, would choose death for yourself, or allow someone else to choose death for you, then do it. No animal wants to die, even when there is pain. They look to us to help them live, not to kill them when they become an inconvenience.

Why is killing the animal an option? The animal is suffering, however, we should do all we can to keep them alive and try to give them a good quality life, is like saying "save money, kill the animal..." That is selfish. We use the animal's pain as an excuse to solve the "issue" we are having taking care of a sick animal.
