I find myself watching a lot of Mac videos in recent times simply because, as a 30 year Mac user, the advent of the M1 and what it may mean for my future workflow is very concerning. It is so refreshing to watch your very informative, low-key, sensible explanation of pertinent topics. No hyperbole, no animated theatrics. I never hesitate to click on your videos, even if I am not particularly interested in the topic. With some of the other guys--most in fact--I see a new video and immediately ask myself, "Do I have the energy to listen to this bozo right now?" It's often like inviting a used car salesman into my studio. Thanks for a great job!

@@MarkEllisReviews Mark: Couldn’t agree more. You and @theverydaydad are my go-to experts. I’ve got a question that has been concerning me, however. I’ve been an iMac junkie for nearly two decades and looking to replace by 2015 model with an M1. I’m afraid, based on the listed prices for the 24-inch iMac, the bigger next model will be out of my price range (above $3000 based on my 2TB needs). Is that a reasonable concern? Again, please keep up the great work! Thanks! Wayne

@@waynebeamer Nice to be named alongside him - thanks! It's so hard to say regarding the next big iMac. You're probably not far off, to be honest, but I'd certainly base your guesses on current iMac prices, because it's unlikely to be that different, given Apple's history with this.

Prioritize RAM, storage specially for Desktop(Mac Mini, iMac)can be compensated with an external ssd. Macbook wise it is more of as hassle but still doable(upgrade when in doubt, can’t do it afterwards). The extra storage is just way too expensive. Most of the files you won’t need most of the time. For most users the speed difference is not that noticeable except in like booting. Finally upgrading the storage won’t add much to the resell value. So if you plan on selling after a few years the value will be quite similar to the 256GB ones. Tip: be sure to keep about 10% of your drive free for optimal performance.

Another great video Mark. I bought my Intel 2020 Mac mini with 512gb, and I only use 45gb of that, the rest is external SSD storage, it's fast enough for my type of workflow, page layout and a bit of photo editing. I think I'll go with just 256gb for my M1 Mac mini but get 16gb ram option. I use iCloud quite a lot, I tend to keep "current" work on there and off-load to an external once the project is finished, large photos are kept on an external drive, but the actual page layout file is normally kept on iCloud, it's a great option for me, as I can take an iPad, go to a client and discuss their project, get their feedback and if need be, make minor adjustments and edits right there and then, get back home and finish it up without having to transfer files from one device to another.

For me personally I stick with the 1TB; historically it has been the best compromise of onboard storage and space for new things. There are many times when you want to use your laptop without things hanging off the USB port and when internet connectivity isn't reliable, fast, or available. I had a 512 Macbook few years ago and was constantly bumping up against the storage wall, so I upgraded the SSD (back when you could) to a 1TB. Very $$$ at the time but was worth it (and it still works).

It's disgusting you can't upgrade the internal SSD. Just the fact that it limits the number of applications you can use is ridiculous, external SSDs are fine for files, but not apps. I'm sick of Apple getting greedy not allowing people to upgrade their products. They basically are a monopoly bc PC is a freaking mess.

Thank you for making this video! It was really easy to understand, especially for a tech novice like me. In case you or any other techie ever sees this comment, I wanted to ask: what counts as "hammering" a computer? I've heard a lot of these reviews talking about pushing laptops to the limit, or something along these lines, and I'm wondering if I'm actually doing this and need a more robust laptop. I primarily use laptops for academic research and document work, to watch and download movies/music, and web surfing - sometimes simultaneously for hours. No video editing or photo storing, though. Do I need a laptop with more than 8GB RAM/256GB SSD storage? (Oh yeah, I also have no money and hope I don't have to buy a new laptop every few years.)

Super insightful! But I'm still undecided on what to go for. I work with music and audio and starting to get into the streaming and video editing side of things. My current poll of choice is whether to go for an iMac or a Mac Mini (both M1). I have an MSI monitor, and it's one of the reasons I'm leaning towards the mac mini but also when it comes to portability, the mac mini would also be on the advantage. By portability, I mean the ease of carrying it, in which case, I would have to move or travel somewhere. As for working on the go, I'm always using my Macbook Pro. I'm 70% onto getting a mac mini, but for some reason, I'm not fully decided to go for it. Help? lol

great video marks, about to buy m1 mini and this help me a lot, i’m a bit like your mac mini case, i’m teaching video editor and after effect for uni, occasionally do video editing for my business and about to jump into the world of live streaming and streamyard stuff. So i wandering if i instead go for 256gb + external ssd (my local shop cause me around 320 usd for 2tb samsung ssd) is a good idea? I used to store everthing local and backup the files every like 3 month or if the local storage is nearly full. I working with 512 mac book pro for longtime so not sure if change to 256 life will be big different not not. I hope it make sense. Anyway, cheers.

Nice video reinforcing the route I have taken. I bought a Samsung 870 500 gig Sata drive to go in my hub as well as a T7 & T5 USB drive to plug into a lightning port should I need more. I've always been a fan of both Dropbox and Google Drive. That recently saved years of work when my iMac hard drive died. Cloud storage is the way to go for photographers. Great Video .. It is nice to see videos for us "everyday users" and not geared towards content creators only .. ( you now have a new subscriber ) .. I am currently using an Mac mini ( 2018 ) intel I3 3.0ghz. with 8 gig of ram and 256gb hard drive and a Samsung Evo 2tb external drive housed in a dock that sits nicely under the Mac mini... I would consider myself a basic user mostly .. but I spend a fair bit of time in Fusion 360 ( cad) creating models for 3d printing.. I am interested in the new iMacs that appear to be on the horizon especially the possibility of a 32 inch version and M1X or possibly an M2 chipset.. I am thinking of getting the basic M1 Mac mini with 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage to bridge the time until the iMacs come out next year.. My current Mac mini struggles in Fusion 360 now ( in 4k ) .. so I have to drop down to 1440p to make everything smooth and not clunky .. I believe this to be graphics related and not really CPU related.. With that limited amount of use information what would your advise be ?

Hi Mark. First of all great video as always, but you didn’t mention one option for the non professional user; the family plan from e.g.Apple. Buying the 2TB option from Apple in a family plan gives you the opportunity to share the storage and the costs between max 6 people. This might be a good option for some and it is much cheaper, each member will get 333 Gb for 1 pound 16 instead of 50 Gb for 0,79

I think 16/512 storage is sweet spot for long term use, especially for mobility and performances wise. But if the budget concern i will take MBP 13" M1 8/512 CPO. It have what i need in terms of the battery life, performances, buffer storages, mobility, and portability. I'm not worried about SSD wear and tear because it have 512gb SSD for much long usage. I have a little trick for using MacBooks with external storage: get a case for your MacBook (which you always should, MacBooks dent and chip like crazy), stick Command strips onto the SSD and the lid part of the case, so you can attach the SSD onto the back of your laptop lid when it's in use, and detach it when you want to. In this way when the SSD is in use, you can move your MacBook just like there's no external SSD connected, it won't be dangling around. Just don't stick Command strips directly onto your MacBook lid, so if you change your mind you wouldn't risk scratching it when you remove those strips.

So I paid to have the 2TB, 16GB M1 MacBook Pro shipped a few weeks ago (it took almost a month - I live in LA and the only option was ordering via the site/app)... My husband got the 8GB, 512GB M1 MacBook Pro and I bought my mom an M1 MacBook Air 256GB....Overall, after spending time w all three of the M1 macs in my orbit which each have different ram and memory (mine, my hubby’s, and my mom’s M1 air when she comes over)... the MacBook Air is my favorite. I can’t believe I’m saying a MacBook Air is my favorite anything, but the M1 air is really amazing. The thinking for me getting the fully tricked out MacBook Pro M1 was more “planning for the future” as more programs use the M1, and I want my MacBook to be able to handle video if for some reason our normal setup were to fail. All of that said, fantastic videos, great information and thank you! And if you’re reading this and aren’t planning on truly extreme/insane heavy duty work on your MacBook, I would go for the MacBook Air M1 :)

Hi Mark. Great video. Thanks. I have a question and would be grateful for your view. I am making tutorial videos where I make presentations with keynote. I use this because it allows me to create animations. I want to screen record this presentation and later add an overlay video of myself doing a voice over commentary. All together there may be a total of 30 videos each between 5min and 20min long. The big question is which MacBook do I need. Air vs pro, 8Gb ram vs 16Gb, 256Gb drive vs 512Gb. Great info here, Mark. Quick question in regards to your Sandisk Extreme external. One reviewer on Amazon writes: "(The M1 Macbook ports which are) Thunderbolt / USB 4.0, which should run at 40 Gb/s, but in reality it only operates at 40 Gb/s with Thunderbolt 3 devices, under USB it actually runs at USB 3.1 Gen 2 specs, which operates at 10 Gb/s." Just wondering if you've noticed read/write speed reduction from using your Sandisk Extreme, which I believe is only USB 3.1 and if you think a buyer should invest in a Thunderbolt 3 external. Thanks.

May i ask some advice please. I've used a mac tower for years in South Africa, I left 3 years ago bringing a 2011 MacBookPro with me and all my music productions on ext drives. 15 months ago I bought a 2014 MacMini from OWC and installed a 4TBSSD, I purchased 2x5TBHDD Seagate drives on which are stored the majority of my Music Software Library, such as Spitfire, BBC, 8Dio, Arturia etc etc. In August I acquired BBC Symphony Orch from Spitfire Audio, and incredible library but sadly my Mac Mini just doesn't have the balls to run it let alone all the other orchestral and band plugins that i need to run for my productions. So, I explored Apples new offerings, i cried at the $6500 starting price for a tower...OUCH! Let me point out that some music software requires/demands space on my internal drive, I have presently 800 GB left of my 4TB, this is yet another worrying factor. OK....I need either 64gb or 128gb of Ram so I'm considering a 2018 or late MacMini that can have 64gb or more of Ram. It has 128GBSSD Storage, yep the one that's soldered and cannot be changed. It can be used for the basic Apple Apps etc and I'm thinking.... put my 4TBSSD in an external box and teach the machine where every item is stored. My 2x5TB's remain untouched, no problem there. Soooo, a iMAC PRO has also been suggested, seen a few with 64gb ram or more, I could have my 4TBSSD installed. Any suggestions? Many thx. Keith (thx for reading my request)

I’ve seen your video on 16 vs 8 GB RAM and now I just saw this one. I still don’t have an answer. I’m not an intensive user. I don’t do gaming or video/sound editing. I do photo editing and just use the computer for light work. So on the surface 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage appears to be appropriate for me. But I’ve bought windows PCs in the past and when buying the base models, I’ve had to add RAM over the years and have had my computers get bogged down and not be able to do updates. I’ve had to do factory resets and get rid of all but necessary files. I have one desktop which I’m looking to replace. That one has 2TB storage and I’ve added RAM to it. It works wonderfully. I do keep my computers for a lot longer than most people (somewhere in the 10 yr range) so I’m afraid that the base model Mac Mini might not be enough RAM and storage. Again, I’m coming from Windows PCs so I don’t know if I’m comparing apples to apples or not. I can always buy external storage as you pointed out but will 256 GB storage and 8 GB RAM be enough to run the machine well into the future or should I upgrade?

Depends very much on whether you’ve added the music to iTunes. If you have, have a Google of the solution - there are lots of really useful guides out there which will explain it far better than me. If you’ve just got a bunch of MP3s on your old mini, it’ll just be a case of attaching the new drive and copying them across :)

I'd note that choosing the lowest storage has it's faults. Everytime you update the OS it takes up a vast and amount of storage And can cause issues later on down the line. Minimum of 1tb is preferred. If you don't believe me you'll shoot yourself in the foot 5 years down the line. If your using external drive be sure to use professional ssd drive like those from owc or glyph. If glyph, the Glyph atom is awesome! If you have sessions that will be "heavy" go for the 16gb version of the Mac mini. The power needed is subjective and it sounds like on this video he's saying 8gb of ram is ok, but if you're serious about your music production 16gb would be a huge difference.
