There was one point of interest I was curious about, when you mention Meher is that the only asset offered to the bride to be or is Meher usually accompanied by other traditional gifts like gold and jewelry? I was curious to ask because I've seen that in some Islamic cultural backgrounds Meher is occasionally considered secondary and separate to traditional gifts such as gold and other valuables.

Very interesting (and very good English by the way). In the UK most marriages are for love and as more women than men now go to university younger women tend to earn more than their husband - I earned 10x mine. It tends to be wise here for the man and woman to have similar earnings and similar asset values when they marry. However as in most places wealthier people tend to have more choice of a spouse because we all across the planet seem to forget basic Christian and Islamic principles and warnings that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of heaven.

In Malaysia being a multi cultured society even giving an Al Kuran is acceptable as a Mahar. We do not normally request for a Mahar in a form of a house,car, electrical items etc etc. Normally it's in money form. For an average income earned family nowadays Rm10,000-00 is the lowest requested Mahar. There are some that would go as high as Rm100,000-00 depending on the status of the bridegroom.If it's inter racial marriage than they would follow the bridegroom s culture Or just accept the request of the bride s father.

Can the bride say how much she wants as Mahar? Does she communicate her wish to her father and her father asks the Groom? Or can the Bride directly ask the Groom about the Mahar? Is Mahar only discussed between the Groom and the Bride's father about how much money they want for her daughter or does the Bride have a say in the amount and ask the Groom directly herself?

As someone who is marrying Saudi woman, I don't like the concept of Mehr as it needless pressure on men and a hurdle for marriage. But it you have to arrange it as its part of culture and without it her family won't accept even if she does. Because her father controls the marriage.
