Just because it’s chain driven it’s not bulletproof BMW have thought of that and designed failure into the chain guides by making them out of plastic.
@ChopsGarage8 ай бұрын
Trust me I know all to well about chain issues
@trevorphillips30558 ай бұрын
Tell me what else cam chain guides are made from because everyone I've ever seen has been plastic. They are special plastics that are widely used for that purpose. I'd say the problem on the mini is the tensioner, they rattle on start up until the oil pressure builds up. That's an early sign of a problem.
@Chris-mh3vf8 ай бұрын
I don’t do a lot with modern engines but all the guides I have seen are steel with a rubbing strip bonded to the wearing face usually some form of rubber I think, plastic will be used because it’s cheaper to produce, but BMW have doubled down by placing the chains at the rear of the engine! So you have to remove the engine to service the timing gear. And chain premature wear and failure is very common in N47 engines.The ultimate driving machine, yeh right! As for the mini, the door that opens onto the road is designed for LHD, as is the automatic lever gate so that in a RHD car the lit gear position indicators can’t be seen by the driver, BMW just couldn’t be bothered to change it. Mini all fur coat and no knickers.
@trevorphillips30558 ай бұрын
@@Chris-mh3vf The Mini engine is a French unit from Peugeot, Citroën. I've had one and I know they don't have the best reputation. I did the water pump on mine myself. Also had the clutch replaced at 80k and it was worn to the rivets. I did enjoy my time with it though, the build quality in some areas isn't great but it was good fun to drive.

Yeah symmetry makes things easier when designing world market car body shells, the " mirror image" tooling of the shell was obviously a cost BMW didn't want to spend out on but you would have thought the UK,Australian,New Zealand and Japan markets combined would have made it worthwhile ( it usually is atleast with most van manufacturers who only have one side loading door but unlike mini they don't have to swap petrol tank sides etc admittedly) but is what it is and was always something that put me off this model personally. Keep up the great work. 😊

Some gems there chop, don't forget to change the oil pressure switch on that Corsa, they leak oil into the loom passed the seal and very common for going, for the sake of £4 and 2 mins to fit its not worth the risk. Had two contaminated looms recently thanks to people leaving leaking pressure switches, a lot of messing about having to change the entire loom and in once case a new ECU was needed ☹☹

Cars like this must be super tricky to price. Really low miles can be nice but as you say there probably aren’t too many people that value it more than having a newer car, possibly even a newer shape. I think you’re about right on this one. I was in the market for a 5 series, a dealer not far from me had one but it was below average miles by a good chunk but he had marked it up probably 30% over book for average miles. I tied to meet him in the middle but he got really stroppy so I left. Picked up an average mileage one a couple of years newer for similar money, a few weeks later I got a phone call…. I take no pleasure in that because I am sure he genuinely thought it was worth what he was asking but you just have to compare to what you can also get for the same money or be prepared to sit on it for a couple of months.

In New Zealand we have the opposite problem;every car is an Auto and Manuals are hard to find and desirable. As an example a 2006 Honda Accord is ,in good nick a $7000 NZD car in Auto form.A Manual version of the same car is ,at minimum a $11000 dollar car and usually more. A Civic manual ,usually, double the price of an Auto.. Not the rule for every car but as a rule ,a manual is far more desirable.

The whole front doesn't need to come off, the headlamps come off easily, I think the bumper is removed and then you put it into front end service mode which gives more access.

They won't appeal to the same people very often. Neither is better than the other, they're different - that's all. If you want a dependable small car then the Yaris is excellent at doing this job. The Suzuki swift is an almost criminally under-rated small car being both fun, practical, cheap, dependable and a hoot to drive. Especially the 3 cylinder or sports models. Good god £13k for a 2011 mini the world has gone mad. Personally i am no lover of mini at all I think 9k is far to expensive even at that mileage. But fair play to you sir and well undercutting what auto trader says
@ChopsGarage8 ай бұрын
But if you were part exing the car and you checked online and it gave a value of 13k would you accept the 7k needed to retail at 9k as a dealer??
@paulmckinder30828 ай бұрын
@@ChopsGarage to be honest if I part ex that and was offered £7k for it I would be over the moon as I probably would not check auto trader. But as I said I like your honesty that your undercutting auto trade by a huge amount I just never in a million years would say a 2011 car would be valued at 13k
@ChopsGarage8 ай бұрын
@paulmckinder3082 this is my point. If someone wbac the car or autotraders it and says worth North of 10k if you offered say 5k you would be considered "ripping someone off" but on flip side if you advertise at 10k you are ripping someone off , touch can't win lol

This is what BMW say. "BMW claims that it would have been too expensive to re-engineer the car for right-hand drive markets with a left-hand back door (or two rear doors) due to the location of the petrol filler cap on that side" 🤷

Not worth anywhere near £10,000 in reality for a 2011 Mini, certainly not AT's £13,400 which is utter madness, BUT .... after nearly 40 years professionally in this business this falls into the "Where will you find another" bracket, so good luck to you.
