I have a friend I try to help out sometimes (never cash) who is homeless in a red county but blue state overall. They shut down homeless camps then people move over to the next. They try to make it a home adding stuff to their tent, repairing it whatever way possible (or just adding extra layers). Then you got to start over and try to move as much as you can. Because you don’t got a car and you been slowly adding to your “place” over weeks/months now. Local gov just tells you to kick rocks or go to jail when they want you gone. So you talk to your buddies with you in the camp and try to find the next spot to go.

As someone who made 25k a year for a while, it’ll be hell to live off of. But since you won’t have to work at all you could spend time doing something you enjoy even if you don’t make a lot of money doing it and the combined income would be pretty comfortable

The only way 25k works is if you have no debt. If you have a home to live in debt free, and 500k in the bank, you can live of 25k to pay for food, utilities and some discretionary spending. You won’t be living a life of luxury, but you could live say to day. If it’s coming from a tax free investment vehicle that’s a little over 2000 a month. If you have no rent, you’re paying 1,000 for food and bills, then 1000 to do whatever you want with. This also depends where you live, of course.

The key difference is that you made $25k working a full time gig. But in this case, you would get $25k handed to you through your investments, saving you time, energy, and stress. All you need to do now is work 2-3 days a week, you can add to that and bring it up to $50k and you have 4-5 days off every week of your life.

Interest rates are almost always annualized rate. 5% on 500k would pay 25k/yr. Any high interest savings, cd or money market account is going to pay interest monthly so $2,083/month. Most people can't live on that.

You might make 5% on that, but then you gotta pay tax on that so you make 3%. Then you gotta account for inflation and voila: you’re eating up the money and this idea doesn’t last very long

You have to realise that you can't take with you. The trick with money is to make enough to sustain yourself when you reach a point you can't work and spend to have just enough money left to bury you.

If you know what you're doing is the key. Most people don't. Its a very high risk play. There's a new fancy bar that opened near my place. Its freaking empty while the dive bar a few blocks down is always packed.

How does this make sense ? 5% of 500k is 25k You can live off 25k? Maybe if you get some super cheap apartment and have very few bills while being extremely frugal and thrifty. If you have a family or kid definitely not

10k a month after taxes assuming you're saving at least 3-4k a month of that and have reasonable mortgage car payment, with little or no other debt. That would be comfortable in today's econ, but also can't go buying designer everything and 5k vacay.
