The making of these is just incredible to me. I can't imagine the dedication to craft one had to have to produce one by hand. Obviously there had to be some tooling, otherwise it would have simply taken a lifetime, but holy hell.

Okay so all the tricky parts are computer controlled now a days.... how tf did they make these 100+ years ago, pure genius. I love music boxes . :D

Some still make stuff like this by hand nowadays. In the Netherlands we have basically big music boxes build into a trailer. We call it a "draaiorgel" or turning organ. Instead of a roll you usually use punched paper strips as the actuator, and the "organ" is cranked/turned by hand instead of a spring. Instead of just sticky to metal combs these organs are more complex and use pipes like a pipe organ as well as drums. For these machines they still make new paper sheets with the latest pop hits and so on. So yeah, people still do create such matters by hand.

@@LogiForce86 In Germany we have those too called "Drehorgel" pretty similar to yours but no wonder as a direct neighbour. But a Drehorgel are also those smaller boxes which only have organ as sound the really big ones as you described and that we have too also have drums and so on.

@@lukassteinbrink322 Yeah, we have them in various sizes too. Although often you'll see the bigger ones here. Also the name is identical except one word Dreh = Draai. The problem is Drehen in high German has the origin in Dreihen in Low German (Platduuts) and via Groningen and so on where we speak in dialect Low German / Platduuts / Lower Saxon (whatever name you fancy) it has gone from Dreihen to Draaien but phonetically it's spoken in the same manner. 😅

Imagine making these in the days of old. They must have cost a fortune, and sold only to the wealthy of people.

that’s about right, cylinder and disk music boxes, they were only for the wealthy. unless the cylinder was less than 7 inches, or it was a 8” or less single comb regina music box which was affordable then for the average person. but all other sizes were for the wealthy only

nah these shits were so common that they were used as childrens toys. perhaps when they first came out they were expensive, but they sounded like shit compared to having actual musicians present, so they were only used wide scale as childrens toys. the music they are capable of playing is extremely simple, and 99% of the time sounds like complete shit.

Divide a sheet of paper (length equal to total bars in the music, also equal to the circumference of the cylinder) in to segments with distribution of individual notes timed according to the measure of music. Once this is done wrap it around the cylinder and punch those places and insert a pin into it. Needs musical knowledge and precision in craftmanship. Better not to venture into doing one. Will be frustrating if pin doesn't fit in to hole and not properly getting secured. Alignment is important. Also getting a tempered tuning forks (xylophone type) is difficult, moreover it may break due to brittle nature. Gears will wear out after certain number of use. Anyway it is a precision engineering marvel.

*Watchmaking and THIS are ones of the most advanced and precise works a human being can do.* Yet it will be forgotten because of the machines. There are fewer hand-job masters with every year. And the machines will never make it better than a man* by hand. Emotions are needed for this, but people don't understand ...until they compare. :]

They probably ran their milling machines, lathes, and other machinery off of a rotating shaft mounted overhead on the ceiling that was powered by a steam engine. Pinning the cylinder was done by hand.
@e.conboy4286

@@mikeeverett2006 Yes.My dad was a master machinist and I have photos of the early shop.Power was generated by water channeled over huge water wheels which turned wide straps of leather in a circular form connected to another round shaft which kept the action going all day long. This energy was used in textile mills, meat processing plants, auto building factories, until electricity was proven safer and with the growth of the TVA, electricity was easily produced and power could brought to towns, farm, ranches, towns., cities and just look at us now.We generate more and waste so:much light, it can be seen by the astronauts on Sky Lab. But early before the industrial revolution, work done in making these precision instruments may have been accomplished using power generated by a type of treadle or foot powered, similar to your grand or great grandmother sewing machine.: pulley and belts connected to belts controlling the energy to run the machines that were used. Amazing, isn’t it?
