Ethan, I'd also spend a few bucks and have then install isolation valves so that you can isolate each tank from the common manifold. That way, if one tank malfunctions you can just shut the isolation valve, pull out the problem tank and then use the good tank.

Ethan, it's likely venting head pressure from an over filled tank or the valve may be worn, It can be scary but don't panic, stay calm, vent the camper, remove the tank, put it some distance away and let it vent, glad your okay, stay safe.

A less expensive option would be a Spot Messenger satellite panic button, or similar device. It can send pre-programmed emergency messages or short texts along with your precise location, and their international rescue coordination center will contact the appropriate agency for help. Messages can also be sent to family and friends, and it can be programmed to drop digital "breadcrumbs" on an internet-accessible map (a good reason to keep it in a pocket, not your glove box!)

Ethan, if this happens again, wrap a wet rag around the shut off valve and turn the valve off and remove the hose from the tank and remove the tank from the camper. The wet rag will keep the gas from igniting. I would check into replacing the 2 old tanks to new tanks. The hose connection may need to be replaced to fit the new tanks. Love your videos. Stay safe.

Why do you have to keep the same propane tank? Doesn't you change tanks in the USA when you buy new propane? Like, you give the old one, and they give you a refilled, retested one?
@Dieselbubba1225

I'm happy you didn't get blown up. I've heard of people's houses getting blown up due to a propane tank explosion. Personally, I think I'd be completely paranoid about living in the camper with a propane tank following this. When the tanks, lines, and connectors are in good condition, they must be safe, otherwise no one would be using propane. I wish you the best, and have a Happy Thanksgiving today.

Next time, if you’re paranoid about static electricity, you should be more worried about the batteries on all of those electronics causing a spark. Open the windows, and ventilate. Also, the lights on the truck will cause a spark when you open and close the door. And the metal on metal contract in the latches. You sort of psyched yourself out too much and not enough at the same time.

@@DonaldDucksRevenge Electrical engineer here - a device can only cause ignition if it creates a spark, even a small one. Don't remove or install batteries in an explosive environment, and don't run motors (many spark internally).
@ProFriend
@ProFriend 7 ай бұрын
The prohibition on cell phones while fueling only applies to phones with removable batteries - think flip phones. Smart phones are pretty much air and water tight, and produce no sparks internally or externally. They're really not a danger. If you have a flip phone though, best to leave it in the car. Dropping it could cause a small spark as the battery disengages, and if gasoline fumes are dense enough, kaboom!

Very happy you are safe. I used to love living in my motor home. I was also extremely leary of fires, with all the gas and propane stored underneath it. Also have to be cautious with some older camper refrigerators have electric and a gas operated that uses a pilot flame. The light switch on the truck door can also cause a spark. Yeah they wont fix older tanks or any tank that has significant rust on it. Camper life was always a fun adventure, kinda miss it. Thanks for all your vids, your time and efforts. There are some places that will exchange the tank. Most places like Homedepot and Lowe's will. But your tank is an odd shape and probably old connectors. When you stop for refills or stop at campgrounds start asking if they know where you can get a new tank or update the tanks. Might be as simple as adding and adaptor for a new tank.

I loved your camper and truck tour. I used to travel with my Husky, Zhivago a lot and he loved to ride in the camper but other times he just wanted to sit up front with me. I found a product, I think at Walmart; it's a blow up doughnut that fits between the back of the truck and the front of the camper so the dog can have free run or just hang his head over inside the cab to watch the road ahead. I didn't have to do anything with the windows because the camper and the truck both had sliding windows. I even used it to crawl from the cab to the camper without going outside.

The only extra thing I would have done (which you may have done but didn't show). was to open the windows to let the breeze blow though the camper to ease any gas buildup. You mentioned that the gas bottles and fittings are old - would it not be cheaper and safer in the long run to replace them rather than repair them? At least you now have another cooking option which you can use indoors or outdoors. We have one of those for blackouts and they are very efficient. Good wishes.

This is common & happens. Buy new tank(s), its cheaper than repairing & recertifying old tanks. That's an over pressure relief valve. The tank has warmed up & it's over pressure now. Propane is heavier than air so leave the cabinet & the camper door open to outside & excess propane will dissipate out & there won't be any danger. Remove the tank from the cabinet & let it gas off. Once the propane has aired out of the camper, switch your hose to the new tank that's bleeding out gas & use it for a while to relieve the excess pressure off it. Enjoy the learning experience. 😊

I think you handled that situation very well. At least you were aware of the static discharges. When entering the camper, I would have grounded myself to the camper metal outside and if possible, would have reached inside for any metal that was grounded to the camper metal such as window frames before letting go of the door metal. As long as you are continuously grounded to the camper, you shouldn't generate any sparks. You could also grab an extension cord and strip each end of one of the conductors inside it and ground one end to the camper metal and wrap the other end around your wrist to prevent sparks. Safe travels Ethan!

Most systems have isolation valves, but maybe Ethan's is so old that it doesn't. Certainly the system could be upgraded by simply installing individual shutoff valves on each tank branch line, or a selector valve where the individual branch lines come into a common manifold. Either way, it should not be a major expense or difficulty, and certainly would improve safety and convenience.

Ethan, you reacted well considering how little you know about Propane - like most people. When your propane sensor goes off, it's well below the lower explosive limit, so no real danger. Letting it vent off was the right thing to do. Once the doors were opened, the propane density was very low, just smelly. The butane cook stove was a good purchase. In addition to propane emergencies (like running out), it's great for cooking stinky stuff like fish without fouling the living space. A good sleeping bag, foam pad and small tent would also be useful and wouldn't take up much space.

Love your videos I agree that you need to get a CB or a satellite phone for emergency communication. Short wave radio is a great option. We are all rooting for you and enjoy your adventures. When you have the opportunity, look into relocating the tanks to an external location like the roof and replace all the lines since they like the tanks age. I am not a big fan of anything combustion as the convinces come with risk like you experienced or worse the byproducts of incomplete combustion that are odorless and just as toxic and dangerous

Oh my soul - what a stressful vlog. I am so glad you survived though. I hope you can learn all the ins and outs of propane tanks for the future so you don't have this happen again or know how to deal with it better. But I was really stomach turned over your ordeal; I would have been very stressed in that same situation too.

Propane tanks have an expiration date. Make sure to check it before bringing into your truck. The phone could have been a risk also. Glad you made it out OK.

In Australia we have a nationwide gas (propane) system called Swap'n Go. You just turn up at one of their outlets with your empty gas bottle and grab a full one & pay for that one. You only pay for the gas, but you get a new(ish) gas cylinder (bottle) every time you swap it over.. It's great as your old empty gas bottle is tested upon return and the date stamp checked for compliance - if it doesn't qualify then that bottle is removed from the program. This way you always get a new(ish) gas cylinder that has a quality seal and you know its not faulty.

I was very impressed you thought about not causing friction for static discharge.

Ethan, I leaned some valuable lessons about a year ago about gas leaks. It was last winter and it was was in high 30's outside and started noticing that natural gas smell, whichbis actuallyvan additive to natural gas as its doesnt have a smell on its own. I call the gas comoany, they tell me to evacuate myself and pets from the home, come out but dont find a leak and say maybe a dead animal crawled into my rai water drainage pipe. Next week it gets about 10 degrees colder and my neighbors smells the gas leak. Gas company comes out immediately and finds the keak is coming out of the pipes in the ground. Winds up the cold westher causes the gas to pool and be more noticable but it had probably been lesking for a long time and just noticed it in the cold snap. Very possible that tank had been leaking for a long time and because of the cooler temps it became more noticeable.

You absolutely did the right thing, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Shame you'll be without your propane for so long, but you're a problem solver and looks like you figured it out. Stay safe

Glad you are safe. Your tanks appear to be 5 gallon and are super common- Walmart or Costco, around 50 bucks. You should be able to replace your tanks easily. Best of luck and stay safe.

Hi Ethan. Since propane is heavier than air you can expel it from the camper just by opening the back door. Don't open the door to the truck b/c it is not at the lowest level. I would also get your alarm checked. It should have gone off long before you are light headed. The type of leak you showed I have never seen. You were indeed fortunate.
