Ukraine is aiming to deploy more advanced weapons in its push-back against Russian forces. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says Ukraine has taken deilvery of a sophisticated air defence system, called NASAMS from the US. Russia currently controls around 15 percent of Ukraine - and, as we heard, Moscow is preparing to formally annex these areas following the so-called referendums. How will the NAMSAMS weapons systems change the way Ukraine fights this war?

Maybe that is one possible aspect of a future. Then again maybe we dig too deep and awake the balrog ... i mean the GAI will eradicate us or we do it ourselves, which in a sense when creating a GAI which we loose controll of would be the same. Maybe due to cripr9 and the available proten folding contributed by deepmind we could instead eradicate all deseases or we create a super virus which kills all of us ... . We clearly have options here ^^.

The advantage of the NASAMS AFAIK is that all the batteries and radars are integrated with each other over distance - so that the system figures out, as a whole, which launcher is in the best position to engage a target. Also with multiple simultaneous targets it is able to distribute the load on the various targets so that all targets are engaged optimally.

For those unfamiliar with American weapons systems, most are 100% domestically produced and designed but we do not hesitate for a second to collaborate with allies if the end result is a great weapon system that provides a decisive advantage. Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Poland all have great weapons programs. We do not need bragging rights or need to puff our chests and pretend we are the best at everything all the time. A little humility goes a long way. Bottom line is you must provide your soldiers with the supplies, weapons, training, equipment, and leadership needed to destroy whoever needs to be destroyed. It does not make much difference who made what as long as you win.

Like all missile systems aircraft can fly around them as they should be easily aware of there locations as soon as the radar is turned on and the Russians also have capable anti radiation missiles not sure the capabilities of this system to defend against those.

These "experts" need to read the information about these systems, before going on camera. These systems can shoot down aircraft and cruise missiles, so it will protect Ukrainian cities from mostly cruise missiles. The USA sent 2 batteries and will send another 6 in the future for a total of 8 batteries. The other 6 still need to be manufactured. These systems use American radar and air to air missiles. The Norwegians made the fire control system, so these air to air missiles can be used for this ground to air system. Raytheon makes these in the USA with the Norwegian fire control components. Obviously, the USA is not going to buy the whole systems from Norway, especially when most of the system are US Radar and missiles. The Norwegian company also makes these in Norway with American components: radar and missiles. I read, the Norwegians also integrated some European made missiles into this system for European countries.
@norwegiangadgetman
@norwegiangadgetman Жыл бұрын
In theory, the system can use almost any air-to-air and ground-to air missile. There's even a launcher for 'cheap' AIM9 SIDEWINDER missiles. Just the thing to shoot down drones with. And since it's a decentralized system, by the time the Orks detects the radar lock, they may have flown over the launchers, and should be preparing for a HE enema... I don't know where the finished systems are coming from, but the Ukrainian soldiers has been here in Norway to get the necessary training. And they learn fast!

These systems will likely never be used anywhere CLOSE to the frontlines. The purpose of these systems is to stop the indiscriminate cruise missile attacks on civilians in cities like Kyiv and Odesa (and in that respect, Ukraine needed them about six months ago). I'm sure everyone has seen the latest terrorist attacks on Odesa using Iranian suicide drones. Those are literally the EXACT kind of attacks that NASAMS is being sent to Ukraine to stop. These are very short-range systems (relatively speaking and compared to something like a Patriot battery) and will almost certainly never have the opportunity to shoot down a Russian fighter jet or helicopter. Although considering how incompetent the Russians are, maybe one of their drunken pilots will get lost and accidentally end up flying towards Kyiv and will somehow manage to get close enough to be shot down with NASAMS...but I doubt it. These will be used by Ukraine exactly how we use them here in the USA. NASAMS batteries are set up around the White House and other sensitive areas in DC to protect the White House and Capitol building from airborne attacks. Whether that be an airplane or drones. That is what Ukraine will do with them. They will be set up around Kyiv and Odesa...perhaps eventually around a city like Kharkiv...and will be used to shoot down incoming cruise missiles and Russian/Iranian drones in order to protect those cities from future attacks.

@@xbandosx1 You don't seem to understand the logistics of this war. The S300 may have a longer RANGE than NASAMS does, but IDK what else would make it "far superior". And having a debate about which system is "superior" is literally meaningless. Why? Because Ukraine DOES NOT HAVE THE AMMO to keep S300 batteries operational for the rest of this conflict. That is EXACTLY why NASAMS is being sent. If Ukraine is forced to keep shooting down tiny little drones with huge S300 AA missiles, they are going to run out very quickly. They are likely on the brink of running out as we speak. That is the main reasons NASAMS is being sent to Ukraine. It has nothing to do with "capability" compared to the S300. They are being sent because NATO can continue to supply Ukraine with the AMRAAMs that are fired by NASAMS pretty much forever. There are no huge stockpiles of Soviet-era S300 missiles available for Ukraine to replenish their stocks, and once they run out, Russia can hit these cities with cruise missiles and drones non-stop without Ukraine being able to stop them.

He makes them out to be equal to S-300 Soviet era AA missiles. They are not, and not only able to resist jamming they all work as a single unit, the radar from one is used by all of them so 100 kilometers is not the actual radar capabilities of the system, just of 1 part of the system. A line of 10 of them in a row gives the ones on the ends a 1000 kilometer range along the row. If two are side by side 50 kilometers from each other and something is flying between them the system will pick which one should fire before the operators can even think about it. They are not what Russia and Ukraine have been used to making them simply resupply.

NASAMs is a basically a Norwegian fire control system and launchers plus US components such as a Raytheon Sentinel Radar, not a Norwegian system as claimed in the video and US missiles. NASAMS 3 the latest version adds support for AIM-9x, Extended Range AMRAAM, and the German IRIS-T and it will also add a new GhostEye medium range radar based on a system developed for the US Patriot air defense system. GhostEye would open up interoperability with the Patriot possibly leading to Patriots for protection of higher value targets such as Odessa and Kyiv. So it’s big news.

The system is actually based on work done on the old NOAH system. And it already can interconnect with Patriot. They also use optics from Rheinmetal. Incidentally, they used a pair of NASAMS to protect Washington DC during the 2005 Presidential inauguration. Not certain why they didn't use a Patriot system? (The airspace over The Whitehouse is still protected by NASAMS) NASAMS 1 could also control RBS 70 manpads and L70 40mm cannons. Don't know if 2 and 3 can still do that.

I'm afraid they simply do not have enough jets, nor are their jets advanced enough to achieve air superiority. Furthermore there would need to be a huge SEAD campaign along the frontline - something which they cannot do without new aircraft. MiG-29s with AGM-88s aren't enough, especially given their limited implementation. What Ukraine needs are F-16s. That is their only chance for air dominance.

Those systems will be saving Ukrainian lives, so your input is irrelevant

The defense contracts and new purchases of weapons system was the economic motivation for expanding NATO eastward. Georgia, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden, and most importantly, Germany will now be new markets for American-made weapons. Most of the older Soviet/Russia-made will probably be donated to Ukraine in exchange for the US-made newer technology.

There's no way they can afford it with the downturn in European energy production and currency.

@@hermanwooster8944 Which country are you talking about since the US clearly has a history of lend-lease debt forgiveness and rebuilding wartorn West Europe in exchange for access to the European market and a pledged opposition to communism. The only European nation that will be in economic ruins will be Russia. Even if a nation doesn't have the ability to immediately fiance weapons systems, it won't make any difference to the US government. Ukraine will be a new market of 45 million pro-US/UK consumers buying US goods, services, and financial products.

@@hermanwooster8944 That's not an economic argument you're making. That's your political opinion, and it's got nothing to do with objective reality.

@@ritemolawbks8012 It is an opinion, but it is based on the economics. The decrease of the Euro and Pound in relation to the Dollar combined with the higher cost of Western military weapons is a very difficult proposition. To put it another way, there's a reason Poland is turning to South Korea and not to Germany or the United States to purchase their tanks and artillery. I suspect that purchase is being heavily subsidized too.

@@hermanwooster8944 That position is not based on any economic forecasts. You're nearly saying the exact opposite of reality. You do know there a war going on in Europe and even Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland have begun mobilization? Military spending skyrocketed over the past two years. I'm not an expert, but I do work for a defense contractor and can see the increase demand. I could forgive you if it were slightly true, but being willfully ignorant of obvious fact that military spending has increased, leads me to believe there is an ulterior motive behind your remark. I'm not attack your position, but do you have a credible sources saying that Europe can't afford new weapons because I'm not sure where you got the impression of military spending declining during a war and heightened alert?
