“The F16s have been in production since 1976. They have been built with four different radars. All the F16s we are providing to Ukraine are equipped with the original old radar.”
Senior lecturer at St Andrews University Dr Marc Devore breaks down the key five steps to bolster Ukraine's defences, including providing patriot defence system batteries and upgrading F16s.

The Dutch F-16s all are block 20 MLU so they were updated around 2004 with the APG-66 radar which, while not as advanced as the latest APG-83, is still capable of using the AIM-120 at its maximum range and detection well beyond that. This is extremely easy to verify, so much for this guy's expertise...

@@tobiasrietveld3819 ha! Beat me to it. I just wrote a comment on how the MLU aircraft Ukraine will receive indeed fly with the apg66. But it’s the apg66V2. It’s upgraded and absolutely has a detection range from its main search modes of well beyond 60km. He said it can only detect fighter sized targets at 56km. I feel like this is common knowledge to most that know a little about military aviation

Part of the Block 20 MLU was upgrading the APG-66 radar to allow for firing BVR missiles, not upgrading it to a newer version like the APG-83. But while itself can't engage AIM-120 missiles at their maximum range, this isn't as big of an issue as the guy makes it sound, as MLU also gave them Link 16. Ukraine wants to keep their F-16s planes as safe as possible anyway, so the most likely use scenario was always going to be that the fighter jets will just stay safely in the backlines or at low altitudes, firing at targets shared by the donated Saab 340 AEW&C planes or ground radars, well beyond it's own detection range.

Upgrading the radars with AN/APG-83 SABR would be a good way to add a lot of utility to these older F-16s. They have already received some mid life upgrade packages to give decent overall capabilities. Some of the F-16s transferred to Ukraine are set up for SEAD with Have Glass coatings to reduce RCS a little bit. Since they will have access to those materials anyways, there should be no barrier to providing additional coating material sufficient to add to all of the other F-16s. A deep rebuild to block 70 standard probably isn't practical for Ukraine because it would be expensive and put those units out of availability for a long period of time. Since Ukraine is short on aircraft they can't really afford any further delays on F-16s and these mid grade models will have to suffice. But some upgrades should still be feasible without adding long delays either before or after delivery.

Well, they are getting the two Swedish AWACS (not AWACS, the Saab). While two means they could with bad luck just lose them right away, and that they won't be up most of the time, but when they are part of a mission the F-16s should be able to use their data -- which also means the F-16s are not illuminating themselves with active radar. ? If of course this is about the U.K. planning to buy the F-16s from the U.S., I don't think anyone will be stopping you. I am somewhat confused what this is about otherwise.

They could upgrade from the F16A/B Block 15 Nato Mid Life Upgrade standard which was done in the late 90s to the latest Block 70 F16V standard. Like Taiwan did recently with their Block 20s (which were essentially new production Nato MLU avionics standard with some C/D model airframe components) . These avionics upgrades also formed the basis for the US's Common Configuration Implementation Program for F16C/D this century. But a more important issue is what airframe life do these ex Nato planes have left? They were built in the 80s and had some life extension with the MLU but it may be prohibitive in cost and possibly need new wings and other major components etc. to really allow a significant life extension. The Taiwan planes were built a decade+ later so upgrading them to Block 70 with the APG83 radars etc made sense. The MLU/Block 20 avionics are no slouch. They are better in many ways than standard C/D Block 30-50 production. Some export operators of C/D models are still on pre CCIP avionics! Taiwan F16A/B Block 20s in their training squadron in Arizona the last 28 years routinely beat US C/D models especially in the days before CCIP was rolled out across the US fleet.

What he was saying about the Patriot systems, if true, should not be news to NATO and specifically the Pentagon and White House. Why they are being piecemeal in transferring Patriots to Ukraine is just nonsense. After hearing Biden's speech at the NATO summit seems those systems should have been in Ukraine long before now.

I've made the same point about the F16 many times...it's NOT the plane that matter but its abilities, especially radar. Donor nations know this, so again, the West is giving out of guilt, NOT logical means. If both sides engaged in close engagement dogfights (merge), the F16 would be great but this isn't how the war is being operated. At best, the fighters we're giving them are good bombers but as for protecting themselves or defensive duty, they are indeed useless. It would have been a far smarter thing to give them Swedish Gripens with the much more modern radar and missile range. So many mistake shave been done early and this is the only reason why Russia is even still in the war.

A Shaheed drone may only cost $50 000 to $250 000 each, while a Patriot missile is a million, BUT, what's the cost of repairing or replacing the target it hits? This must be considered and as such, spending a million for a Patriot to shoot down a cheaper drone can be considered economical, as that's not mentioning the human lives it saves. The US has plenty of Patriots and we've known this, so to give Ukraine only 2, after all this time, is criminal in itself. But it's not our people being killed, so the West doesn't really care all that much it seems.

Analysis of the hospital incident: Main Features: The warhead (warhead) of the X-101 rocket contains ~415 (+- 15) kg of hexogen (hexal), which is equivalent in explosive power to approximately 700 kg of TNT. Rdx has a high detonation velocity and density, which makes it significantly more powerful than TNT per unit mass. At the same time, relatively few light fragments are formed from the X-101, please pay attention to the nature of the "fountains" on the brick wall of the house from the explosion, there are a lot of them, but the dust is knocked out slightly = a lot of weak fragments. When detonated, X101 forms fragments mainly from its own body - large and relatively slow and few are formed, well, secondary ones from nearby objects can be ignored in the calculation. The facts of the incident: The scale of the destruction: Only one entrance of the building fell, there is no funnel, which indicates a low-power explosion. Despite this, dense fragmentation lesions of the house are clearly visible on the video, which indicate a significant number of fragments formed. The nature of the explosion: The explosion was fragmentary, but weakly expressed in terms of destructive force. The fireball was round and full-fledged, which confirms the regular detonation of the rocket. Comparison with fabs: The consequences of the explosion of """"X-101"""" in the hospital are much weaker compared to FAB aircraft bombs, despite the seemingly large warhead. For example, FAB-100 is 7-8 times weaker than X-101, and FAB-250 is about 5 times weaker. This is confirmed by the video from the consequences of the explosions of these bombs on similar buildings, where much less remains of the buildings and large craters are visible. Video effects: 1.Video of the explosion of FAB-250/500: The video shows that after the explosion of such bombs, little remains of the building and the funnel is clearly visible. This is in stark contrast to the incident related to """"X-101"""", given that the building is similar, and the bomb is 5 times weaker than X101. 2.Video of the arrival of the FAB-250: The AFU camera captures the arrival of a high-explosive aerial bomb (FAB 250) - deaths, concussions, wounds by an explosive wave in the room are visible on the face. But video from inside the hospital immediately after the explosion demonstrates that people stay on their feet, talk and hear each other without hearing protection. This is very different from the second video, where a soldier in armor, helmet and hearing protection falls from an explosion that was 5 times weaker at the same distance. Conclusion: The explosion in the hospital is 100% consistent with the explosion of the warhead of the AIM-120A air defense missile with 25 kg of explosive having a TNT equivalent of 1.34. This is confirmed by the observed consequences (a lot of fragments, a weak explosion) and video footage. I have given arguments and proofs of my point of view, which are very difficult or even impossible to fake, not like a cropped photo of a rocket. But judge, think, of course, for yourself.

Just a thought. Has anyone considered a bit of Jaw-Jaw? The War-war option doesn't seem to be doing any good for Ukraine. Oh I forgot! There's not much profit in Jaw-jaw.

Jaw Jaw is why Ukraine turned over it's nukes to Russia in return for Russia recognizing it territorial boundaries.

@@neededtruth9764 Why do you say no? I bet you also thought the Abrams tank would be a game changer for ukraine as well when the reality is that they are so useless that they have had to be withdrawn from the front line to avoid more losses! Nato is fighting a first world power, not men in sandals, and you can bet that they have been working out effective ways of countering F16s for many years.
