Play out the scenario why the 49ers go second this the Chiefs go first as everyone seems to think would have been the better call. In this scenario, have the chiefs get a touch down and a two point conversion. How does this turn out?

I think we forget the context of this rule change. The public was complaining after the afc championship that Josh Allen never got a chance to answer Mahomes after he scored the TD in overtime. Now, people are up in arms about the rule change and screaming that it is benefiting Mahomes. I ask you, how! Mahomes is inevitable, no rule changes can get in his way of winning.

People forget Mahomes got burned with the coin flip in 2018 AFC Championship game against Brady, Mahomes never got to see the ball in OT.

And the reality is, if they hadn't changed the rule, this game would have played out exactly the same. If it was still the rules we were under three years ago (or regular season OT rules still), San Fran definitely chooses to receive (and the would be NO argument on that choice). And if they kick a field goal, KC still gets the ball with one opportunity to score. Under those rules, the first possession only wins OT if it's a touchdown. If it's a field goal, the other team still gets a possession. You have to go back to 2009 to get to a pure sudden death OT where even a field goal on the first possession won the game. So the rule change in this case might as well not exist, because it really didn't play at all in the game. The only thing the rule change did in this game is allow a debate about whether or not San Fran should have chosen to receive in OT. Since they chose what they did, OT played out the exact same as it would if the rule had never changed.

Same thing happened to Mahomes in his first year in the AFC championship game... Went to overtime, and Brady won the flip, and Patrick never got to see the ball. We petition for the change nothing happened, then it happened to Josh Allen and then they changed the rule after that.

AGAIN!! No one cared when it happened to the Chiefs. Where was this big brained analysis when NE and Brady beat the Chiefs in OT? The ref EXPLAINED the OT rules before the coin flip. Who's fault is that the 9ers players weren't clear on the OT rules. Both team play under the same rule. It doesn't just benefit Mahomes. I bet you complained to have to OT rules changed when the Chiefs beat Buffalo in the 13 seconds game. Buffalo got the OT rules changed like you wanted then. Don't try to be a contrarian now.

What if both teams go for the 2 & both make it? Then its sudden death after that so you would definitely want to have the ball 3rd to end it with a field goal

I think Mike S. did the right thing with his second season QB if you think about it ,taking the ball first actually took pressure off of Purdy he didn’t have to match Mahomes ,If Chiefs got ball first and scored a touchdown then Purdy had to do the same or lose that’s pressure

The thing the other teams have to do vs KC is to not play KC's game. In every game in the post season, teams were running all over KC. KC wants you to pass the ball. Teams were pushing KC around running the ball. Then...they stopped running the ball (or SF didn't run the ball for 3 drives after an early 3rd quarter Mahomes interception). All those teams lost. Also, in the week since SB, there's been a lot of great breakdown vids showing how SF had the worst missed blocking assignments in the most important times of the game. Teams/coaches have to have much higher attention to detail. Important 3rd downs you KNOW Spagnuolo is going to blitz you. 3 key plays KC had players running free at Purdy. That's on Shanahan.

LOL more chances, it’s just good to be the Chiefs. So many people, including the sportscasters, who didn’t know the rule making excuses for what ONE team was absolutely prepared for. Sure, it’s good to be the Chiefs…. who play winning football, know the rules and train for OT so everyone knows what’s happening. It was a mistake on the 49ers sideline. No excuses, no karma, just the wrong decision. It happens.

I think the 49ers Defense was gassed from being dog-walked down the field, and that was a factor in Shanahan’s decision to get the ball first

Yeah they didn’t change the overtime rule in 2018 when Brady beat Mahomes in the AFC championship game. Not a word was said but they changed it for New York Buffalo Bills Josh Allen give me a break. Now we benefit from the rule change ha ha

It's so minor. Most relevant is score TD instead of field goal. Making a mole into hilll guys. Stop talking about mute point. The turnovers and tackling warned on the blitz is much more impactful. Who the F cares.

I think the Chiefs are extremely lucky the wheels will fall off next year,Bills had extremely bad luck with injuries this year on defense.I think the AFC is way to loaded with good QB s to challenge Chiefs

I may be wrong, but did these guys read the actual rule?? According to the NFL official site, the winner is the team who is in lead at the end of OT. So if the Chiefs had scored a TD and there were to be time left on the clock, the 49ers would have gotten the ball back, Appenently the Chiefs knew the rule, which was the reason why they wanted to run down the clock to not give the ball back to the Niners. So time is of the essence. What the Niners could have done,. give the Chiefs the TD and then try to score a TD on their own with the time that is left. As soon as the Chiefs were in Field Goal range, give away the TD and save time.. If I`m right, Shanahan should be fired for lack of preparation.

No. The Chiefs took the lead and the game immediately ended. They didn't even kick a PAT. There was still 3 seconds left on the clock of the 1st OT.

Negative bro, both teams get one chance at a td then it is sudden death after that. Time was irrelevant, if that quarter would have ended before kcs td then they would have flipped to the other side of the field with a new quarter.

I think anyone, regardless of their affiliation with any NFL team would have to agree tbat taking the ball first is, STUPID! If you commit a turnover and the other team scores the gams is over. If you score the other team still gets a shot. Third, it's Patrick Mahomes. You do not hand my boy, the greatest QB playing today, extra downs.

Can't either or Chris seriously if you don't even know how old 15 is. He just turned 28 yrs old. He is the only NFL player to win 3 Championships, 3 SB MVP's, and 2 MVP's in Seven Seasons. No other American athlete in a professional sports league has does this in 7 Seasons. I think Bill Russell comes next he won the same in 8 Seasons.
