How not to build a Roller Bender

In this video I show you how you should not build a roller bender. The mild steel that I have used for the shafts isn't strong enough for the low distance between the shafts. I will try to fix that with hardened shafts in the future.

I like it, using Thompson rod would probably taken care of that problem or making hardened collars for the rods so you could get it apart if the collars galled up.

I made a similar bender, What is the name of the round ring that is inserted into the shaft between the two bearings to prevent it from moving when the pipe is rolled?

Try pushing your clamps together so they are the same width as the metal you are curving. I think you are pushing a rise on each edge of your steel and then grooving your turning bar with it. If there is no place for the metal to go it will stretch not kink. This is the same concept as to why you need different size dies for bending round tube for like roll bars. If you don't have the die it will kink. I think you're kinking on the outter lip. Worth a try as it will only take a sec to move your clamps inward. Hardening the bar will help for sure. I'd love to hear how that worked.

Thank You for comment and advice. I think you are right. I also think that my roller bender is too weak and small for such a tube. I've looked for professionel roller bender that can bend such a tube and they are much bigger and mor stable.

Use a fwd/rev drill if you don't need the workout that the tiny wheel gives you. Beyond that a 24" wheel would be a better fit for the manual labor side of it. I like your design though. It seems to work well.

Great job, I’ve been looking at making one and this is the best idea I’ve seen yet for simplicity. What size bar did you use for the rollers? I think to add to this I’ll make it a little bit wider wider so I can position the two pairs of bearings further out to spread load. Thanks :)

Thank You! I'm using 30mm bars. It is a good idea to spread the bearings further apart. Then stronger materials can be bent more easily.

@@samsworkshopdiary5748 oh poop. I ordered 25mm bar but I’ve done it with 190mm wide Channel steel so I think I can get 100mm between bearings. I’ll post a video. I have also sourced a motor with a gearbox so that will make it easier.

@@CalamityKim1 I don't think that the 25mm bars will be a problem. I am currently converting my roller bender so that it can be used with a cordless screwdriver, but unfortunately I have very little time at the moment. I'm looking forward to your video.

Sorry to sound thick. What are the names of the ring bearing looking guides for your steel box. The things with the grub screws in. I need them for my roller bender but don't know the name to search them. Do you get much warping whilst rolling the steel?

I'm not sure if you mean the flange bearings or the collars, but that should help now. They don't warp when rolling, only my shafts were too soft for the thick square tube.

What diameter are your rounds? Grate job nice.

They are called collar.

yes I still fluctuate between c45, 42CrMo4 (4140) or 115CrV3
