Thanks Sean, useful. I have put together a small folder with my flyer/operator ID's, drone code and some CAA CAPS (2003-2008/2012). Since passing my A2 CofC, I have also purchased a card from Drone User mag, which is a credit card sized copy of my cert. Stay safe and keep up the great work.

I would suggest not to have anything drone related on your mobile devices, keep them on a paper copy in your flight bag, as once you have handed your device to the officer you have given him permission to search that device, so always keep your mobile device to yourself, as it's surprising how much information people have on them that the police are not privy to. One other thing if the officer is aggressive in any way or form ask them if it is a consensual conversation, if you feel it's not then you do not have to speak to them, as anything you say can and will be used against you, if he asks to see operating number and pilots licence do show them but not from your device, my motto is with handling police is say nothing, fear nothing. So the least said the least trouble for yourself. Unless they can categorically say you have broken any laws regarding drone flight keep quiet and let your solicitor do the talking not you even if you feel you have to tell your side of the story DON'T.. and if you are arrested don't rely on their duty solicitors as they work for them. PS You are not required to incriminate yourself whatsoever, so the less said, the job of investigation is down to them as your not obligated to do it for them.

Yeah police and government drones so they can spy on, control and harass you even more for not wearing 6 masks in your shower or social distancimg from your wife in bed or whatever. Half the reason they're pushing all these crazy new drone laws on civilians. They see their potential for control and want it for themselves, and don't want you impeding on it. Same as why they stripped you of all your firearms and weapons, effectively outlawing citizens right to self defense. Especially against them wjen they cross the line.

Thanks for this. Legal drone flying brings so much more to photography and creators. Like others here, when we're actually doing nothing wrong, I agree that some people are hostile to cameras and drones, thinking they know it all and more than the CAA does. 'Karens' and 'Herberts'. Speaking (writing?) as a very 'senior' newbie to drones with a first purchase bargain Mavic Mini on the way, your videos are really useful. Apparently I'll have to do courses and a Flying ID or something, and I'll get it all done asap before flying. Also apparently, the Mavic Mini may be less restricted than others which might provide a bit more freedom. Even so, it's probably best to stay far away from humans, built-up areas, and homes.

Years ago, some friends and I used to kite buggy on an out-of-town council owned playing field. We were often visited by a council employee in a van threatening us to leave or he'd call the Police. Knowing we were doing nothing wrong, we asked him to call them. Two officers duly arrived and asked us two questions: 1. Did we pay council tax? Yes. 2. Are we doing any damage? No. That ascertained, the Police said as council tax payers doing no damage or harm to anyone, we were free to carry on. Not before we got a pic of uniformed Police sat in kite buggies :-) Unfortunately, the council won in the end by eventually planting random goalposts and trees all over the field to keep us out and make the land useless.

Quite possibly the best video you have produced Sean - thanks. Good practice is to wear a bodycam yourself if flying alone. I've been threatened to be shot with a shotgun by a lunatic local when flying within an FRZ - with full Airport Tower permission. The Police, typically have absolutely no idea what the rules are - and really don't like being filmed, especially live streamed. However, if you do attend a protest environment and are positive you can fly there - then always seek out the Inspector on the ground and 'inform' them where you will be flying, and what you will and won't be doing with the drone. Chances are you won't be bothered at all after that, well - most of the time anyway.

Hey Chris Kendall! Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it! Yes, the need for Operator ID and not Flyer ID creates a little confusion although I wonder if most officers will accept the 'registration' number on the drone and be happy. It will be interesting to hear the feedback from people who are stopped and checked this year.

@@Geeksvana police officer here. After talking with a drone hobbyist I now have my own (Mini 2). Laws are slightly confusing at first but soon make sense. @@barrieshepherd7694 It shouldn't be too suorising. There are tens of thousands of laws, regulations and offences in the UK. Police can only be trained in a finite amount, usually those that are most common or which are currentky topical. They will have additional knowledge based on their specialism. Drones are not something that the average police officer will encounter that often and is not something routinely trained. Most forces have a drone team - who certainly will know the law - who can be asked for advice if required, or it can be looked up on their data pads.

@@pinkyperky3506 Your point has some merit BUT almost all police forces have issued "Drone Policy" documents and given the active press I would have expected that officers would at least have been pointed to reading that policy document. So while not knowing chapter and verse of UK Drone Law/Regulations, they should at least recognise that there is a policy and that it is not a case of 'making it up as they go along' .

Thanks, for the video! I might also suggest that you wear a brightly colored vest that has "Licensed Drone Pilot. Please, do not disturb" printed on it. And, if you have authorization to operate in that air space, be prepared to provide that documentation, along with your license and drone registration information. You might also show the officer your flight and maintenance logs to establish that you are experienced and knowledgeable about the laws concerning drones.

Greetings from Cyprus! Great content Sean. Here in Cyprus the local Cyprus CAA insist on registration of your drone (free via an online portal), but they issue no registration number or even a confirmation email that you are actually registered. Considering that in December 31st 2020, Cyprus will have to comply with the new EASA regulations it will be interesting how compliance will be administered. I seriously doubt that any local police officer has any idea about the regulations. I attended a course here, and have an Open Category Recreational Flyer certification (which I always carry when flying), but have recently completed my A2 Certificate of Competency (CofC) with UAVHub in the UK to comply with the new EASA regulations. It will be interesting if the Cyprus CAA will recognise my UK A2 CofC certification when you new EASA regulations become law at the end of 2020. I doubt it actually, but we will see! Cheers

Superior technology to remote ID is auto drone separation from other aircraft above 400feet , TFRs , restricted and controlled airspace. More legal freedoms to fly in clouds, fly as high as drone pilots want and beyond VLOS if the drone has auto return to home if the drone looses transmission contact with the controller

Very interesting and helpful video, thank you! Please could i get your thoughts about a nearby private (farm) airstrip, without an ATZ of course and no manned control whatsoever, it also doesn't show on NATS Drone Assist app, would it be legal for me to fly near that (as i want to video an area of interest nearby)? Thanks in advance. P.S I also have an air band scanner which would allow me to hear any radio calls made by nearby pilots.

Hey Simon! Thanks for taking the time to comment and for your kind words, much appreciated! In terms of airfields, there is a map available to show each field's individual FRZ, which you can access via this link: dronesafe.uk/restrictions/. If it does not show on there, I would suggest approaching either the CAA drone team on 0330 022 1908 or the airfield operator. As each field is unique it is hard to advise more specifically. Which field is it? Feel free to email me the details if not comfortable placing it in a public comment, (sean@geeksvana.com).

Most police forces in the UK either have a drone unit or work with drone pilots, so the levels of knowledge by ordinary officers are improving. Making the situation safe finding out what the officer (or a member of the public) thinks you are doing wrong and addressing that in a non-confrontational way is the best way to avoid wasting everyone’s time. YT is full of people proving points with the police, it’s never a positive experience. It is however a great way to get anti- drone bylaws passed so the next time you fly there you will be in trouble. 😖

I can not run the risk of getting arrested by the police as I have one of those faces that look guilty even when I haven't done anything. I get nervous and say inappropriate things and joke about and always seem to unintentionally offend. I have had my Mavic Mini since December but it hasn't been outside yet due to lack of places to fly locally and the Coronavirus lock down but the mere thought of being challenged by a police officer who may not know the rules is enough to keep the drone in the box. I have registered as operator and flyer and have insurance but I am afraid that the CAA along with local councils have killed all the pleasure of drone flying for me and so I will now offer my Mavic Mini with fly more combo on eBay auction starting at 99p.

Plenty of them are just regular guys trying to do their jobs but just as many are aggro wankers out to pick a fight with someone. My last formal altercation with the police was 7 years or so when a pair of coppers jumped out at me from nowhere shining torches in my face and aggressively asking “WHO WERE YOU JUST TALKING TO?” This made no sense because I was on my own literally just stepping into the entrance of a park from a main road, trying to put an empty packet of crisps in a bin, not longer after sunset. They still insisted that there was someone hiding near me. Who was the last person you were talking to? “My mate Fionbharr”. And where is he now? “Northern Ireland”. Don’t be giving me any lip, boy. Do you want to come down the station? For fuck’s sake, you just asked me who I was most recently speaking to and that was my mate on the phone in Belfast, I’m trying to dispose of a packet of crisps and I’ve just come back from the pharmacy with gut medication (which I showed them) and I really want to go home. Are we done yet? They managed to drag this out to 25 minutes including the whole PNC check, and forensically searching the bin wearing white gloves, and determining that there was in fact a recently deposited pack of ready salted Walkers Crisps. They were absolutely desperate to find an excuse to search me for drugs of some kind, but as I pointed out to them they had no probable cause (and we got the “we can do this the hard way if you think you’re clever” chat), and basically unless you’re detaining me I’m going home to do a massive poo. On leaving I briefly stopped just to ask what was the reason they were going to put on their form and they said “suspicious use of a bin”, so I said does that mean you are formally advising me not to use bins after dark because it’s “suspicious” and sufficient grounds for a stop&search? And after brief pause they said “yes”. So apparently that’s official advice from Hampshire police force. Don’t dispose of rubbish at night or we’ll stop you to ask asinine questions and threaten you for half an hour. Granted most of them aren’t like that, but plenty are. I don’t suppose looking vaguely foreign does me any favours.

Can I ask a question about the altitude please: If I'm in, say the lake district on a deserted hill, at sunrise or sunset, at a height of 500m, and I want to capture the vista in front me on a photo or a video, can I use a drone such as a DJI 2Pro or a Parrot Anafi? Or is that case that by already being at 500m I'm above the flight ceiling anyway?
@Geeksvana

Hey Gurinder Punn! Thanks for taking the time to comment. You must keep your drone within 400ft of the closest surface of the earth. So if you are stood on a 500m mountain then you can fly 400ft up from where you are stood. However, if there is undulating surface you must adjust the drone. There is an excellent graphic to describe this on the CAA UK drone registration website. Hope this helps.
