I am deliberately wearing a frumpy cardigan to demonstrate a point. This is not my cardigan as I bought second hand to show how even a modern cut can look bad. If you have something in your wardrobe like this then one option is slim jeans as I show but really its a no go . It is big, shapeless and will look bad with most items. A great example of how cardigans can look bad and as I say, why we need this video. I hope you enjoy the video. There's nothing style or fashion can do to make one look good or "better" when one has big "chest". It makes you look overweight even if you are not. How would you dress someone with big upper front and flat lower rear?

The longer length cardigans, whether waterfall or not, are much more flattering on most people. The short ones, especially the white one worn by yourself throughout this vlog, are not flattering at all, saggy and baggy and ending just at most of ours widest point. I am sorry to say it, but it is true.. These shapeless cardi's are only flattering to young slim people. I think one of the perks of old age is being able to forget about what is in fashion, and wear what you like, how you like, when you like, so I am going to stick to longline and waterfall flattering cardigans!

Hi Lynne, yes the white cardigan is an example of frumpy that I used in the video. The only way I can see of wearing such if its in someones wardrobe is as I described, with skinny jeans. It is not my cardigan btw, but one I bought second hand to demonstrate the point. well done for spotting and I am not sure to what extent I made that clear. I had thought I had at the beginning of the video. I do have a pinned comment saying so as well. so do not copy that cardigan, it was not an example of good, but one of bad.

I wear alot of classic cardis and they always done up and they're generally cropped. That has always flattered me. I generally wear straight leg trousers so its fairly balanced.

Denim skirts are very current, especially in a longer length. Make it midi then alter to knee length in a couple of years 🙃

I actually prefer the round neck t shirt with the cardigan on the first outfit it’s the pattern on it that makes it look frumpy, a plain top would have worked much better.

@@jennysiseman3410 I know v necks look worse with a round neck you need a v neck cardigan to pair with a v neck top and a bit of jewellery.. I don’t like those short cardis with the big sleeves either🤣🤣 they look a bit meh and the sleeves pushed up can tend to look scruffy …oh ouch..

I like v neck with low round, scooped or v of a different angle. I don't think the v can be the same shape on both items.

Yes the cream one is balloon sleeve almost grandad style. It’s a modern cardigan but needs to be worn with a skinny bottom item. so its not frumpy in terms of era but in that it is oversized but makes the point well that an oversize needs slim underneath. It is not my cardigan but one bought from vinted to make the point. It is now at a charity shop.

I think the rule by all the stylists is baggy on the bottom, slimmer on the top and vice versa. I think a duster cardigan looks good with wide leg trousers too

I've tried so many styles of cardigans over the years, but the only ones who suit me are the long slim fitted style; I'm top heavy and shorter/chunky cardigans always make me look so much bigger on top than I am. I balance them out with straight or bootcut trousers or jeans. I did like the mustard cardigan and the black trousers as a silhouette; I'd probably give that a go, but would make it a V-neck cardigan for my top half. I think cardigans are the hardest clothing items to style nicely; but they're secretly one of my favourite items in my wardrobe 😅

I sometimes do up all the buttons on a classic cardigan and wear it back to front.(buttons down the back) wear it in the modern way slightly tucked at the front. Voila ! A modern take on the classic.

I love the transformation you showed with the short jean skirt, white t-shirt and yellow cardigan. Amazing! I don't agree with the longer duster cardigan with the shorter skirt - I think it made you look shorter, but you do you. I have always hated cardigans on me. In high school, we used to wear them buttoned up backwards and they looked much better backwards than right-ways around, but I detested them frontwards. Maybe now I can look at them in a new way and there are much more interesting knits these days. Thanks for triggering the re-think. ❤️

Yes! And the pockets tend to sag, which I think looks untidy. I’m scouting for replacements for two of my cardis because I’m tired of trying to pin up the pockets.

Good style is good style no matter who says it is in style or out of date. I get compliments when I wear my cardigans and it is probably because I don't wear them with baggy or wide legged pants or jeans or a droopy skirts. If it fits well and has good lines it is timeless!

Not loving the bulky cream cardigan you are wearing first up. Really love you in traditional mustard short cardigan with faux or skinny black jeans. As you are a petite woman this style looks great. Also short cardigan with belt, denim skirt and v neck great look.

Yes, it s a cardigan I wore to make the point and I bought from Vinted. It shows wide with wide and how that does not work. Its now at a charity shop as I do not need this in my life :)

I am pear shaped and have a ridiculous difference between my waist and hips. I wear printed small size shells, tanks and fitted tops under solid colored open, thigh length cardigans for work with slim black dress pants. This solves two problems: it keeps me warm with the freezing air conditioning at my office and it completely hides my small waist/giant butt discrepancy. Maybe the kids think that waist/butt thing looks good but I’m over 55 and we weren’t raised that way.

Many years ago The "Dress For Success" author said sweaters/cardigans say "secretary." If you want to move up the corporate ladder, wear fitted jackets. I am retired now, and was wearing classic cardigans with sleeveless, tailored dresses until I saw a photograph of myself and that was it. The cardigans are all gone now. I have nothing but jackets now

Office life became more casual eventually but on a meeting or conference I'd still wear a jacket. Younger woman now are seen in trainers and side striped trousers at conferences. Its a shame really as i used to like dressing smart for those events rather than being samey every day.

I have that book. I would like to point out that he was talking about office wear. Rich people (old money) wear cardigans for casual wear. For an example, think about traditional tennis outfits.

Smart casual came in & dress down Friday which I think destroyed smart workwear. Even the CEO of the company comes to work in jeans and trainers in the company I work for they say dress for the job you want but it’s difficult to do without being the topic of conversation

Your cream cardigan looks frumpy in part because the sleeves are too long for you. It's hard not to look frumpy when the sleeves are too long.

Thank you. Yes it s a cardigan that is not in my wardrobe. I bought it from Vinted to make the point. Its now donated to charity. Too wide and bulky but demonstates well how wide with wide does not work.

I avoid chunky cardigans, they don't look good on anyone but underweight models. I wear cardigans with fitted sleeves, open with small buttons or no buttons, I wear mid length cardigans that stop below my widest part. Those long dusters can pick up debris from the ground and get dirty. Tank tops or camis can also look good under cardigans. I am a t-shirt and jeans person. I don't care for most sweater styles so a tee with a cardigan is a nice winter solution or a tank in a/c. I am really tired of the shiny fake or real leather pants look. Who wants to look like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, hard pass.
