i'm not sure what this is a leason in... Maybe: If you want to OC, remeber to also buy quality motherboard, cooler, PSU and ensure decent airflow in the case! Soo yeah, big shock a low-mid end motherboard died when pushed a bit un-cooled... On the other hand i got a low end motherboard 4-phased runing a 8350 at 4,8GHz because i made a watercooling block for the VRMs. As long as you know wtf you're doing using a cheap motherboard can work :D

Just for your edification, Mossfets (part of the VRM) are safe up to about 120C (external temp) all day long. Capacitors are rated for lifespan (in hours) at a specific temperature that is different for different caps. Capacitors can degrade rapidly due to the heat generated by the mossfets if the capacitors are low quality. I would bet that your CPU was actually fine and that it was only the mobo that died. It takes a lot of voltage to outright kill an FX CPU. The 9XXX series runs at a rather ridiculous stock voltage.

I had a cheap ASRock board before, that was rated for 125W CPU. But it had Problems even with my FX 4300 back then. After installing the FX 8350, the VRM's were overheating all the time. Now i have a better ASRock board rated up to 220W CPU, that handles the FX 8350 @ 4.9GHz stable. But for my everyday use, i settled for 4.8 GHz, just to be safe. 20 % is not too bad. Cooling with a 240mm AIO with push-pull fans.

I remember one guy who was able to run 8370 at 4.7 Ghz and 1.28 V :) Thats what you can call a platinum chip :) My 8350 died because i was too naive and listen to one famous overclocker (in our country) who was actually horribly wrong but i discover it too late :) Hitting 1.52 voltage while streaming Lords of the Fallen with fast preset - everything was smooth and fine but CPU speed up to about 5 Ggz and voltage exceeds the limits. About 6 months later CPU just died when i watching some video on YT. Replaced it with 8320e on the same Sabertooth 990fx 2.0 - working properly at 4 Ghz and 1.32 V for 10 months now :) Waiting for an opportunity to move on Ryzen. Great video Brett keep it up :)

Mine was working fine for 6 months after that overkill voltage spike :) And don't forget about tJunction temp was reached and passed in my case - 8350 peak at 78 C which was too high unfortutately :( Still CPU was working fine about half of the year until it suddenly died - so it was temp that kill it not a voltage alone

Any advice for 'clocking a 9-series Nvidia GPU, specifically the 980 Ti? I sorta gave up messing around with it because I couldn't find an easy way to reset my GPU after a failed attempt without blanking my BIOS, which requires me to re-do all the overclocking I did on the CPU over and over again. I swear, if I didn't have the settings all written down, I would have thrown my computer out the window by now lol. Are there specific ball-parks I should attempt to reach for with that specific card, or are they different for each individual GPU?

So my CPU is set to about 1.2V but for some reason fluctuates between 1.2V and 1.4V (even have 1.417 max values).. everything in the BIOS is set to auto. Monitoring with HWMonitor and even Ryzen Master shows the same values. What's happening? :/ (btw. the CPU temperature stays below 55°C even when gaming)

@ruinedlasagna
@ruinedlasagna 6 жыл бұрын
Jesus Alfonso as long as you are using a decent power supply that has enough watts for your system (there are psu checkers online) nothing should go wrong, keep it below 5.0Ghz, as that's the roof for most i7 7700k's without deliding, which you aren't ready for judging by your fear of OCing. I have a cpu (xeon x5660) that is stock 2.8Ghz running 4.3ghz 1.375v now and it's been running fine for almost 2 years!

It is also a good idea to turn off automatic voltage adjustments before you OC or your bios maybe pushing harder than it is meant to. CPU's have been burned out by exactly that.

I was overclocking my fx4350 on gigabyte motherboard. Can't remember what one I had. I was doing a careful overclock but due to the limitations of the motherboard I only got to 4.7 it wasn't the Cpu getting to hot but the northbridge temps. Like you say, can often be the mobo causing issues.

I have a 1060 6gb with a i7 4790 with 700watts. I tried using the OC mode the MSI app comes with and it all just died even though it was just set into OC mode. I got it running again by taking out a RAM and booting it up then i put it back in afterwards. Does anyone know why that happend?

If ryzen 1200/1400 are able to hit 4ghz, why can't 1300x/1500x hit 4.3ghz as it's a +800mhz overclock either way? My 1500x is at 4ghz and I'm afraid to go higher

I have an athlon x4 860k and I overclocked it to 4.2ghz with a vcore of 1.49V(had to set it this high because otherwise it would not be stable) which is ludicrous, but the mobo stays nice and "cold" and in the summer when the ambient temperature is 28deg, under max load the cpu sits around 70 deg, the cpu is air cooled with a coolermaster geminii. It's been running like this for about 2 years now without hiccups.
