I remember my dad telling me stories about growing with nuclear testing close by. His early memories were growing up at the China Lake, California Naval Weapons test facility. His dad would wake him up really early in the morning. They would go outside and look east towards the mountains and would watch what he thought to be a sunrise coming up, but then it would go away and be dark again. You could imagine to a 5 year old how confusing this must have been. "Where did the Sun go?" The "Sun" he was witnessing was the glow from the early Nuclear testing just on the other side of the mountain range in Nevada.

The craziest thing is that the engineers of the castle bravo bomb heavily underestimated the power because of Lithium 7 isotopes that reacted with the neutrons and created tritium which created even more fusion. The bomb was therefore 2.5 times stronger that it was expected to. Just shows how little knowledge there was.

Crazy how the origin story for Godzilla has been totally flipped around. If I recall in Godzilla 2014, they say that all the nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean wasn't actually testing, it was trying to bomb Godzilla.

Just another Johnny Harris video: entertaining and highly informative with just the right level of preachiness to make you think without feeling preached at. I love your style of reporting, Johnny. You don't pull punches, but you don't get to overly judge-y about the past, either. So many people either blindly applaud or criticize the past. Thanks Johnny for touching on this. It is so sad how countries can do this to smaller island people and the ENVIRONMENT. I can't imagine the environmental destruction it caused, not to mention the lives of those people affected. I'd love to see you elaborate more on this story. Especially the story of the people who were displaced, the country that they're from, and the leaders that took a stand to have this type of manipulation and exploitation of people and natural resources (which are so so precious to the sustainence of these people) stopped. I've watched like 3-4 vids of yours in the past 2-3 days. At first i was expecting some normal factual short videos about some technology or history. But boy was i wrong! Am just lost for words. The amout of knowledge and facts your are putting out in the world, its just crazy. You can never learn this stuff in schools or anywhere unless you are pursuing those sectors professionally on a deeper level. This type of knowledge is surely gonna impact people's life/ thinking. Hope we all learn from all of this and try to be a better human in our life.

A lot... Hiroshima and Nagasaki were basically just used to test out the nuclear bombs, they weren't military cities and there was no strategic 'value' in them. Also a lot of the generals who were in office at the time were against using them because of that reason. The president was the one who chose to do it... America is so fucked up in many ways, I can't understand how they think they're the greatest country in the world

Great video on a topic I was fascinated by for a while and did a ton of research on my own. Leave it to Johnny to totally usurp my research with a ton of new info I had no idea about and present it in glorious fashion. One small thing left about Bikinians: they weren’t just unable to go home, they mostly literally starved to death. The US dumped them into other islands where no food grew and didn’t give them any provisions so they mostly starved. As horrible a crime the US did as any other, including the annexation of Hawaii

Very interesting Johnny... This reminds me of my recent interview with Malcolm Gladwell about his book The Bomber Mafia. It's a story about the chemists vs. physicists and the internal battle about how to win the war against the Axis Powers of the time. It's fascinating to look back in history and try to get my head around how our country decided to drop 2 massive atomic bombs that killed over 100,000 Japanese civilians in one shot. It was a difficult time in history for sure but it makes me grateful to live in this era where there's more peace!

During the first nuclear bomb test, Enrico Fermi was tearing up pieces of paper and dropping them to the ground. When asked, he explained that he was testing if the air pressure changed, because that would indicate they had created a chain reaction that was going to burn off Earth's atmosphere.

This was a really well made video and here in Nuclear - Free New Zealand , I do appreciate your research and work on presenting this . The "jellyfish" babies woman gave birth to in the Pacific caused by being exposed to radioactivity are a legacy that is so unspeakably cruel. Thank you

Remember your "Nuclear Free" New Zealand is only that way because countries protecting you that are bigger, have nuclear protection.
