Well you guys have been asking for years when and how we change out the starch in the starch room and we finally remembered that around the same time we had to change the starch 😂 Usually what happens is Steve would change the starch and then Craig would find out a few days later and Steve would say "okay next year for sure I'll remember to tell you!" 😂

💑 About Hercules Candy
Hercules Candy has been on Steve’s side of the family since 1910(ish). When he took over in the 70’s, he anticipated after 10 years of hard work, he could move the business out of the basement and into a real storefront. Unfortunately, it took until 2018 for that to happen, but hey at least it happened! Steve and Terry own the shop, Craig (the social media manager) is their son, Cara (wrapper and shipper extraordinaire who is poised to take over the shop one day) is their daughter and Leah (who doesn’t love being on camera and is very elusive) is their oldest daughter. Karen has been working for Hercules Candy since the twins (Craig and Cara) were about 6 months old and everybody else is a new recruit. Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the 🔔 for more videos!

I think that's what I love the most about your business. You're not just off site owners who expect employees to run your business. Your business is your baby and you do the grunge work right along side your employees.

That's the old timers for you. The kids today should take a tip from them. But most days the younger kids do not want to do all this backbreaking work. They want things to come too easy to them. But you can't run a successful business without having to put all of yourself into it. God bless them

I suffer from depressions and keeping my space clean and organized is a hell of a nightmare for me. So I think it's an inspiration that I can do it, too!

@@HerculesCandy I did a small place which is next to my computer. But wanna continue during the next week. Have a lot of work but hopefully also a new machine coming which needs space. And right now I have none. I thought about the place I cleaned but it is too small. So I need to change plans. 🙄 like... always. 🤣

I read that you can put cornstarch in compost heap and it only takes 72 days for it to decompose. Maybe you could start changing in the spring after the holidays and find someone that compost and donate it to them it would also help to keep compost smell down just an idea

There are some "liability issues" donating it. It would be a nice gesture, but NOOOOO, I would say not. I know... sad to say. I'm surprised the city doesn't have a compost program. That way Hercules doesn't have to worry about garbage day or rain... they can do it and just take it and deliver it on their own schedule.... and spare that plastic bag only using paper!!

@@sortathesame8701 cleaning is weirdly therapeutic. My fav job is washing the carpet. We have a big family someone Is always dropping food or drinks on the carpet. Its so satisfying seeing the dirt being sucked up into the machine.

I like cleaning videos for a couple reasons. 1) I get to learn something new about the company and about what the equipment looks like when it's not in use, 2) It's very soothing to watch something get cleaned, like just seeing the dirt or grime be removed is cool, 3) The lack of excitement is EXACTLY why I want to see it and be soothed, 4) It's interesting to see how it goes from pristine to what it looks like in use. Also, I know YOU weren't interested in watching him dump every bag of cornstarch in, but I'd have liked to see that if it wouldn't have been too much of a bother. How many bags fit in?

What I like about cleaning videos is that it reminds me what I’m not missing when I’m not cleaning. And depending on the type of cleaning it’s nice to see the difference between the before and after.

I love the nostalgia! As this is likely how most candy companies used to clean cornstarch trays pre industrial time. These videos show us even more the inner workings of Hercules and we LOVE IT!! ❤️

A shop vac with one of those dust\cyclone separators would work for this. It's like a second chamber where the dust is allowed to fall before it reaches the vac, and a regular bag can be put into it.

Can I suggest that Steve donate the old cornstarch to a local high school or college to make non Newtonian fluid for experiments? He might even get student volunteers to help him clean out the starch and wash the trays!

A good use for used cornstarch is container gardening(helps hold moisture). Find a local gardening club to see if they could use it.

That's where those little dollies with wheels help. Kind of like 2 skate boards stuck together side by side. Roll that bag of cornstarch right on out to the compost pile. I only mention this, because that's what my grandpa did. I sure don't miss the cornstarch in the air. Thanks for a very nice video. Brings back so many memories, that I thought were gone. I think its just the behind the scene aspect. We see the process of making candy and the final product...but there is so much other work that has to go into it, that we cant see. I just find the entire business fascinating! cant wait to make a trip back for some more candy!

I have wondered for a while how often the starch bin, trays and equipment had to be cleaned. What a huge job. It seems to be a more tedious job than a difficult one. However, moving the starch out of the bins into the bags and then moving the bags is not easy. I hope the young guys took those out for you on garbage day. Did you honestly think the squirrels 🐿 wouldn’t eventually find you? Lol. It took them a while but their noses finally worked their way to you. Thank you for another great Hercules Candy vidya. I’ve been watching y’all for a long time (pre Max days). I don’t comment much but truly enjoy all the videos and livestreams I’ve watched. The quality of the videos have gone from good to super fantastic.

you can actually get a dish apron for washing stuff and its only like 25 or 30$. it's almost like a water proof tarp made into a kitchen apron and it's really useful for preventing your clothes from getting soaking wet and really dirty.

If it’s all going into the bags why put it into the bin first? Why not just dump the starch from the trays directly into the bags?
