This is the best and most straight forward video I’ve found about pool shocking. Although, I don’t agree with everything, for example, I live in Tampa bay, the US capital of lightning storms. If I followed rules 5 (at 3:15, shock after a heavy rain) and 6 (at 3:26, shock after extremely sunny or hot weather), I would have to shock the pool almost every day starting from mid Spring to the end of Fall, lol.

Hello Swim University, I have a SWG Intex pool, 14,364 gallons. I have a SWG that came with the pool(it produces 11g of chlorine/hr) and it has a "boost" mode where it simply runs the chlorinator for 36, 48, or 60 hours. My question is this, is running the boost mode weekly going to obtain a similar result as the traditional shocking method(of putting a large amount of chlorine into the pool by adding bags of shock)? If so, then I have a follow up question. I would like to use this boost mode to shock my pool if possible(since it wouldn't require me buying bags of chlorine) but it seems impractical to boost my chlorinator which takes 36 hours to do(and me not being able to use it due to elevated ppm levels), and THEN once the chlorinator turns off to wait even more time for my free chlorine numbers to go back down to 3ppm. I would lose almost 2 days of swimming every week, unless i'm calculating something wrong. What would you do if you were me and wanted to use your pool almost daily? thanks.

I have an in-ground salt water pool, and I know that the iChlor system will produce chlorine on it's own through electrolysis so I should not need to add chlorine to the pool. However, in the winter the water gets too cold for the iChlor to work. Is it recommended to shock the pool regularly with chlorinated shock during the winter months? I watched my pool go from crystal clear to dark green in the matter of a few days as soon as the indicator light on the iChlor that it was no longer producing chlorine.

I have been using 20g multifunctional chlorine tablets in a floating dispenser in it, and have tested the levels every day, most to all levels are ok, but the cyanuric acid level is high. We have tried draining some water out and replacing it but it’s still high. Someone has suggested using chlorine shock in. Will this help? If so what is the best thing to get (we are in the UK), and how much do we use? It’s 10ft diameter, 2.5ft deep and holds around 1250 gallons of water.

@jamusmorrison30733 жыл бұрын
No you don’t have to. Get a water testing kit. If you just filled up your pool with tap water it will last a solid week. The best thing anyone ever told me was buy a chlorinator. Since I’ve installed I dont have to worry about chlorine or being clear. Little baking soda or soda ash. 3 red solo cups every 2-3 week. Half bottle of Algecide every 3 weeks. Also look for filter socks. If keeps the sand clean that filters your pool. Once a week don’t forget to backwash for 30 seconds and rinse for 15 seconds. That basically is like scraping the head off of the top of a Guinness. Takes all that nasty sand and crap out! Good luck! Oh and remember swim as much as possible. Walk in circles or around perimeter of pool. It’s stirs up everything chemical wise that you put in and stuff that needs to make it to the skimmer. Go have fun!

Someone told me a photometer also measures total chlorine which test strips cannot do. If your total chlorine is high, then your free chlorine cant work and means your pool is full of dead chlorine. So are they saying the test strips are useless because you can’t test total chlorine? I always thought that as long as test strips says your free chlorine is at 3ppm then that means it’s above total chlorine and everything is ok? OR.. Is it in fact possible for the test strips to read ok at 3ppm free chlorine but total chlorine can still be higher rendering the 3ppm free chlorine useless?
@nuntana24 жыл бұрын
Correct. They don’t show total/chloramines. Test strips are ok as a general indicator but are not great for pools.

First off I am extremely great full for your videos. We bought a house last year and it came with a pool, so after watching your videos I felt fairly comfortable with the idea of pool ownership. Fast forward to today. I shocked my pool two nights ago and added stabilizer because our levels were lower than the recommended level. I expected yesterday to find the pool high in chlorine and a higher level of stabilizer. What I found though was that our chlorine levels, according to the test strips, near zero and stabilizer was almost non existent. I broke out the chemical test kit and checked everything that way. Alkalinity and PH are in normal levels but the chlorine, free chlorine, and stabilizer seemed to be near zero??? I’m so confused. I even checked to make sure that we had chlorine tablets in our Nature2 pod and sure enough we do. Oh and also now the pool is also ever so slightly cloudy. I did add clearifier to help with that but to no avail. Did our chlorine magically evaporate in less than a day? I was curious and did test our test strips by getting them wet and waving them in the chlorine tablet bucket. They almost instantly turned purple on the chlorine square so I know they are “working.” Any helpful suggestions here would be great!! Is it possible our stabilizer is way off the charts and just blowing our test strips and chemical test kit away??
@billybrooks12 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure shocking doesn't raise your chlorine levels. Just temporarily. So it shouldn't show up unless you test same day or early next morning. I was having the same problems when I first got my pool. I had to add about three full jugs of stabilizer to get it over 50. Ever since then all is good.

Maybe because I just have smaller above ground 16'×10' oval pool, but when I use shock it stays high for days and never even in a week still shows chlorine, of course if I didn't do anything I'm sure within just a couple or few days past a week it would drindle to nothing. But I watch these videos because I feel I shouldn't use chlorine tabs if my chlorine still up but everything and everyone I see still throws in tabs like right after shock.
