Something a lot of people don't realize that makes the final duet even better, is that it begins with just the piano, with the Violin joining in after a few moments, whereas by the end the piano has faded out leaving just the Violin.

For me it wasn't the final duet that game me this feeling, but that moment when you face OMORI and realize you have to fight him and the violin begins to play in the background. I don't experience it very often, so I search for games and films that give me this feeling. Another example was when Monika in DDLC begins her song. I found out that for me it's the bittersweetness combined with the aesthetics that bring me this feeling

The final duet really got me to break down to tears, you can really feel an impact when you finally piece together all of the clues leading to Mari's actual death and it really hurts to know that Sunny is feeling really guilty that whole time

You aren't a real video essayist until you complete the trifecta of Omori, Bojack, and Studio Ghibli essays hahaha. In all seriousness, excellent work, I loved hearing what you had to say on it! Learning about the music theory was super awesome too, that's something that I always feel so ill informed to comment on when analyzing music. This was a great piece of media to explain the frisson through (which I now know the name of, thanks for that), I had the same reaction when I got to this part and even just watching replays of it gives me the feeling.

I just finished the game and every time I took a break from it, I had so much to think about from my own life; the ways I felt before, the ways I acted before. So much of what OMORI says as a work of art hits so scarily close to home that I found the game hard to play purely because the game is so eloquent in dealing with such raw subjects like guilt, depression and suicide. I know I won't be forgetting this one for a very long time.

Thank you for making this video. I too often experience frisson from music and Omori is so one of the things that has caused that feeling for me more often then others (The final boss theme or the DUET as you mentioned being probably the two biggest examples). As such I've wondered what it was for quite a long time

That was fantastic, I'm really glad I found this video because it really describes the feeling well. The amount of frisson this game gave me was insane. I don't think I played many games that were packed with so many moments of absolute chills. Final Duet, of course still hits extremely hard and it's still difficult for me to watch or hear without tearing up. The entire finale of the game was an indescribable experience, especially the fight against Omori with that beautiful violin piece in the background that gets more and more intense and distorted as you progress. Not only the terrifyingly personal attacks from Omori but also the phrase "Omori did not succumb" -> "Omori will not succumb" was such a genius twist of a sentence I read so often during the game. One I read with a sigh of relief when almost dying in battle, now twisted into what it really meant. That hit me. If I had to choose another of the many moments of chills in this game I would choose one from blackspace. They all evoked certain, vague emotions that were difficult to describe. The cat room, of course, gave me the worst kind of cold chill right down my spine. But oddly enough, what really struck a very strong chord with me was the "Liar" Room with the song "Glade". The simlicity yet intense atmosphere in this room was so mournful and heavy. That simple piano loop that slowly, unnoticeably rises in pitch only to fall down again when it repeats, the muffled rumbling sound in the background. I knew who it represented but it hurts so much more in retrospect. The whole room is just filled with these mangled and distorted beings that let out this weird sobbing/laughing sound. Then the slowly dissolving floor that reveals the distorted and tainted memories of Sunny, the good and the horrific. Memories you will only understand once you finishe the game. "Liar" just echoing everywhere. And all of that leading up to SOMETHING. I was terrified of approaching it and I mean everything in the game prior to this made you fear that SOMETHING. And then it only answers "Sunny... I love you." That made me tear up. It was the final nail in the coffin that confirmed that it was her, it has always been her. But yeah, I think I could recall a whole lot of moments that gave me this intense feeling and I absolutely adore the game for it.

This was a really great video and I think really nailed the explanation on everything. Just for fun, I'd like to add some of the other areas that gave me chills, and they all have a sort of connecting tie. The first is when you first come out of dream world and you're given the message of "3 days left." The second is when you come out of the dream world and it tells you "Don't forget, it's in the toybox." The third is when you go to black space and all the computer keys become door keys. The fourth is in the real world, when you find the last picture in the treehouse, and it flips over to reveal the same message from before; "Don't forget, it's in the toybox." The fifth and final one is one I knew was coming in my first playthrough and it gave me chills anyway; when you finally open the toybox and find the shreds of your violin inside. I guess the linking factor between all these is that they're all quiet moments of realization, where you're granted with a new, substantial piece of information. These are definitely some of my favorite, most memorable parts of the game (among some obvious others like the final battle against omori and final duet) for how much weight they give, and how they made me feel almost paralyzed in my chair when I saw them. The toybox in particular fascinated me since it was first mentioned and anytime I got more information, I remember my eyes just widening and chills shooting from my spine down into my legs and up into my head and just sitting completely awestruck. Not a lot of media can get me to feel chills or even much emotion, but Omori can do so reliably. Thanks for the wonderful video on the subject!

When I first played omori, I did not understand it. The climax totally flew past me at the time because I’m a damn idiot. However, I asked a friend and he told me the correct story. Then, I played it again. Never in my life have I cried at a video game before I replayed the ending of omori. I made it past the duet, but lost it at good morning. The credit song made me understand the themes of the game, and I just broke down. Now, everytime I listen to both ending songs, I get a pain in my heart. It’s so beautifully crafted and so well made.

jordan peterson thinks art deeply moves us because it models harmonious existence at multiple levels, like a meaningful life is harmonious at different levels (present, future, for us, our family, the community, etc), and that we have a sense or instinct to sense that meaning in works of art.

Interesting. I'd never heard of frisson, I just figured it was the intangible, personally-unique feeling anytime a piece of art communicates with you through its mere existence. "Chills" is really a poor term for it, imo; to me, it's a sudden clarity, like when your sinuses suddenly clear unexpectedly, or you snap out of a concussion. Regardless, Omori was full of them; my most impactful one was the entire Lost Library segment. The friends drifting apart from Omori in the same order as in his real world. The lonely, tired piano. The poorly censored memories. Mari's ghost. It all came together in this sheer revelation of repression, I actually had to stop for a few minutes when I saw Mari walking down the stairs. I was so immersed I had to remind myself that wasn't a real ghost.

As for me, the "Final Duet" theme is one of the best classical compositions I've ever heard. However, I also think, that it's not such "frissonfull" (if we can say so) as some of themes from blackspace part. They are horrifying, strange and... beautiful at the same time. It is a little bit dishonestly, that nobody talk about them, because they are kind of masterpieces too (at least for me.) But the fact, that you made an essay, dedicated to "Final duet" composition is awesome anyway. I have never seen somebody talking about music in this game before. So, thank you very much for this video, it was something, that I was looking for a long time. Thank you again! (Sorry for my English, it's not my native language, but I tried to do my best. Just found your video and it's so cool ! As a french person I have to put my grain de sel in the comments uwu Okay so "Frisson" can have different meanings, all of them leading to the idea of fear, but more in a premonition kind of way. Like you're thinking something is going to happen, and it whether or not it happens in the end, you have the frisson that something was going to happen. The final Duet, as well as the ost "Omori" have some interesting use of the violin, it goes loud, then it slows down a bit, and goes higher, and it repeat this cycle a lot of time, and you know it's going to happen and it takes the time to happen, the way the violin drops one single note each time, it's the frisson energy of both "Omori" (the ost) and the Duet The piano at the beginning of Last Duet is giving the same energy of starting on high notes, descending down and stop.. then start again with this leitmotif everyone knows from "Title", and "Rememberance", the violin solo played by Sunny minutes earlier, as a reminder of the leitmotif. So we get Frisson from the piano of Duet, then the violin, we know he's going to go higher each time until it sounds like the violin is screaming, and when we thought he couldn't go higher, when our frissons of the violon going high are certified, he continues, and it's surprising. The ost that gives me more frisson is "By Your Side", when you listen to it, the melody is NEVER the same, it always change, a note can disappear, a new one come, and you can still remember that one melody at the beginning, it's Mari's leitmotif. And is probably one of the most intelligent ost in the game. Merci d'avoir pris le temps de lire

Fascinating. As someone who's listened to music practically her whole life, I wanted (and did) stop the video to try to think of any significant piece of art that may have given me this "frisson"....and while I don't think I experience it (at least I don't think I do?), the one example that _did_ come to mind where I thought "maybe that's it?" Is the song Zanarkand, produced by Nobuo Uematsu for the Playstation 2 game, _Final Fantasy X._ and what's interesting to me - and what made me want to make this comment - is that you technically get spoiled of this song and the cutscene it appears in when you first start the game. And then, it just sounds like a deeply moving and pretty - if a bit somber sounding - piano piece. But then! Once you actually catch up to that area of the game and, without spoilers, have the context of what that song, those people, and those words mean...suddenly it feels...deeper. much more "oh my god oh my god oh my god". The warm yet darkened colors of the sunset over the ruins take on a whole different meaning and that works with the music perfectly to change your perspective of the piece. I suppose that's the power of blatant foreshadowing and context, huh?
