I feel like we take these artist's techniques for granted, considering stuff like photoshop wouldn't come in until the very late 1900s, so it's impressive to see his editing skills put to amazing work. My favorite piece has to be the spread toast piece he did, looks really well put together honestly

one thing a lot of people dont realize is people back then still had tools to ake it faster and quicker. It may not of been modern technology but it was still technology of their time that made processes shorter, easier, and faster. A good example is an art tool called the Camera Ludica. They may not of had photoshop but they had things that worked just as well lol

I got really into poster art & wheatpasting during the anti-war protests in the mid 00s and came across Heartfield's name. I remembered looking him up after SOAD's first album. Reading about a guy who made anti-authoritarian propaganda and had to jump out of a window to get away from the cops felt relatable. The phrase "the hand has five fingers, with all five you grab the enemy" is so powerful, its a call to action that demands my participation in the struggle 100 years later. His contributions are so under-appreciated and its a shame so many people have never heard of him. Thank you for this video.

I think that you should have added, that he also criticized the funding of the nsdap/hitler/nazi Party often. I feel you misrepresented the piece „millionen stehen hinter mir“, as it portrais that not millions of people were behind him, but millions of funding. This funding came mostly through German industry, but was ironically funded by US and UK involvement and business. This is also clear in his piece „wir beten an die Macht der Bomben“. I think heartfield was ahead of the times, and what he expressed way before the war started was neglected and kept going until the end of the war. And then it was supressed by the winning parties. Sutton wrote a book about the Financial involvements in the 70s i believe.

Super informative, lovely overview. The history of modern art and surrealism and abstraction in art has such strong roots in anti-capitalism, pro freedom of expression. Im a queer leftist trans girl in america, and, learning about this helps me feel not so alone. The absolute suffocating hatred of queer people, poc, the glorification of police brutality and billionaire oligarchs in america makes giving up or giving in feel like an easy option at times, but, the dada movement is a tool of fighting against it, of refusing to let ones reaction to oppression follow a playbook. I kind of feel a kinship with that. Thanks again for your video.

The Dada movement, along with the Futurists, Surrealists, etc. were about the destruction of the middle class (The Futurists were all about war and violence). Do you actually think you are protected from it? Did you not know that one of the "billionaire oligarchs in America" you are referring to is the Rockefeller family that are behind the formation of MoMA NYC?
