São Jorge is a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It is also home to one of the richest and most elaborate cheeses on Earth: São Jorge cheese. The volcanic geology of the island means that its soil is rich and fertile. Its location in the middle of the ocean guarantees a mild, damp climate all year round. The result is abundant vegetation that basically never dies and cows that are able to graze freely 365 days a year. These conditions pack São Jorge cheese with moisture, hints of spiciness, and a grassy scent.

I am just amazed at how Claudia can understand Portugese when she is Italian who also speaks French and English. Kudos to this family who's still making cheese the traditional way even though most on the islands are producing it commercially. I hope they have a fair chance at selling their cheese.

I'm surprised Claudia can understand European Portuguese better than I, a Spanish speaker. I know she speaks other Romance languages (native Italian, decent French, and some Spanish), but I hear from many Italians that European Portuguese just sounds completely alien (the joke is that it sounds like Russian, more so than even Romanian), though the written text ain't that bad. Normally it is much easier for Spanish speakers to understand Portuguese (especially Brazilian Portuguese) better than other Romance language speakers, since the languages are much closer to each other. But, wow, I'm impressed with Claudia's skills. Guess she can now add that to her already overqualified resume.

I'd love to see an episode on the Canary Island's cheeses. They are similarly small Atlantic islands, but because the climate is different, they raise sheep and goats rather than cows and make cheese from the milk. It's another well-kept secret, the cheeses pretty much exclusively sold on the islands, rather than exported. I'd be really interested to see a regional eats episode on it.
