Paper factories in Sanganer, India still produce each sheet one by one. The industry has withstood colonization and foreign competition since papermaking communities first arrived in India around the 16th century. We went inside Kalpana Handmade Paper Industries to see how the craft is still standing.

@@aleale6277 • Texture, added artifacts (rose petals, twigs, sparkles, etc.), the knowledge that it's recycled, raw borders. I've made paper sheets at home, but not with the skill that these folks employ.

It's amazing how most of these "still standing" episodes comes from places in India. As someone who is originally from India, kinda makes me happy to see this. Hope their government incentivises people like them so, they don't get discouraged

This is a good example of using waste to make something new. It takes scraps before they get into the oceans or landfills, eliminating complicated collection and purification steps that make some processes unviable. And high quality paper is made from cotton anyways so it really is a win-win.

97% of word's paper is recycled anyway. Landfill problem is different, plastics and other non biodegradable things.

Well, before we can say that this is eco-friendly or not, we have to think about what environmental problems this process may cause. Sure, it reduces waste but does it use a ton of water? Does it use a ton of energy?

@@frommarkham424 These environmental problems would stay the same even if the paper was made from fresh cotton or wood pulp and the harvesting of these raw materials would have a much greater impact.

Western countries used to do it as well when they used only cotton and wool for most clothing. However, the raise of man-made oil-based clothing materials change everything. These clothese are too expensive to recycle, so most of it is dumped or re-sold to poor countries before finally getting dump there.

I used this paper once in a while for watercolor for the past 4 years . The colors look amazing and it’s super easy and fast to do the artwork. Because the paper it’s super resistant and you don’t have to worry about overworking it . Also after it’s done it looks good just by himself . Not need of expensive frame if you don’t want it . That’s amazing to see how it is done 🙏🏽

Another fact, there are production units making handmade paper like this all over India, so there is no single town keeping the tradition portrayed in the video alive. Sorry, but as a researcher on handmade paper, this type of sensationalistic video title really frustrates me.

@Wayne Flanigan So, this paper factory is located in a small village that has a number of other paper factories around making different types of paper. The output of this village combined might be above average, but India has a lot of these areas where paper is made.

@@AP-do6sv There is in fact a unit there making actual traditional paper, but it is only one. Historically Sanganer was and still is a very important place for papermaking.

It's funny how Small businesses and everyday people are more concious about waste and it's recycle while the companies that make bulk of the pollution are not concerned about it beyond tv adverts, Just recently saw that a Company has been running empty flights just so it doesn't lose it's spot at heathrow or some other british airport, but I'm supposed to be guilty for leaving my light on for 10 seconds after i left my room.

Indian rivers are totally toxic from small businesses dumping chemicals and waste in the rivers. Paper making requires a lot of chlorine and other chemicals to make the pump white. Indian rivers are the dirtiest in the world, businesses and normal people use them as rubbish dumps

to be honest, whatever technology comes in future, writing and drawing on a piece of paper is always more satisfying then doing all that in iPad, as an engineering student, i have to draw multiple diagrams, even tho it's half the effort in ipad, still that feeling i get after completing drawing with pencil on A3 sheet is so satisfying.

For me, it's half-half. Drawing on paper has a different feel to drawing on a tablet, but they both feel good. And the feeling differs from medium to medium and tool to tool. For paper, are you using high grade professional paper or cheap copy paper? Are you using a good quality pencil or something out of a dollar store? Same with digital. Are you using a drawing tablet or just a regular iPad? Are you using a stylus, your fingers, or a mouse? All sorts of factors come into play.

I love this series, and also the waste series-- and this video seems to combine both! Their paper is beautiful, and I feel like there is definitely a use for this kind of paper vs. paper that comes from mills. I hope they have business for many more years.

You are being dramatic, paper is paper, not "beautiful". This has no benefit over industrially made paper. It's a giant waste of time and manual labor. We live in the 21st century, paper is efficiently mass produced in all forms and shape.

@@skyhappy 1) you cannot efficiently mass produce everything. 2) mass production tends to be very inefficient when you consider shipping of raw and final goods. 3) you don't get to tell other people that they aren't allowed to have specialty paper simply because you don't think its appealing. Its also worth noting the industrial process kills entry level jobs and forces businesses to support engineering salaries.

I buy handmade paper from India for watercolour painting. The texture and weight of the sheets is wonderful, and world apart from the mass produced watercolour pads available in my area.

Wow, My Malayalam teacher gifted me handmade paper after an essay writing competition when I was studying in 8th standard. I still have it with me. It has got a good fragrance and it is very different, harder and little rough compared to machine made paper.

In Ukraine we have a place for tourists(Radomysl castle) where anyone can take part in making such paper. The place is known since 1612.

I thought all of the papers came from trees and recycled paper waste. It's good to know that there are some other sources of it like garments and such. Kudos to Indian workers who work hard and proudly compete to other manufacturers.

Historically, a lot of paper came from reusing fabric in this way. It hasn't always been made from trees.

I really love my country India, Japan and the middle East (especially Iraq, Iran and Palestine) for still preserving their own culture. More people in the respective countries need to know about these ancient traditions and encourage it in their own country as well as outside. 🇮🇳 🇯🇵🇮🇶🇵🇸🇮🇷

Back when I was 13, we had to choose a science project based on some kind of manufacturing process and present your findings to the class. I chose paper making. Learning about the pulp, aligning the strands with a home made tool (nails in a piece of plywood) and the different additives to strengthen or clean the pulp. I learnt a lot and people enjoyed feeling the paper samples I had made. It's no easy task.
