How Optimum No Rinse and The Big Red Sponge Work

Did you ever think the car wash sponge would make a comeback? We didn't, and this BIG RED SPONGE just blew our minds.
Many detailers of today know better than to use a crusty old sponge to wash a car. A 'sponge" can cause scratches, paint marring, and it's better at pushing around dirt than picking it up. However, Optimum Polymer Technologies just changes the way we look at auto detailing and the use of a sponge. The BRS is made SPECIFICALLY for use with Optimum No-Rinse wash. The sponge has cuts to contour to body panels and get into hard to reach areas, all while picking up dirt. The ONR encapsulates the dirt and provides lubrication for the sponge to wipe across the surface. The sponge CANNOT be used with soap and water. Hence why the BRS is a washing system meant for ONR. Many people are skeptic about this wash system until they try it, and each person is always blown away by how safe and effective it is. Try it for yourself and let us know your thoughts about NEW and IMPROVED sponge washing in the comments. Note* As soft and tempting as it is, please do not wash your baby with it. Unless your baby is actually your car.

I was a huge skeptic of this stuff. Bought the ONR w/wax (the green stuff) and it's amazing. Used it on my vehicles and customer vehicles including a black metallic on a Durango. The owner went nuts over the shine, he asked how many coats of wax I put on cause it never shined like that. I smiled and told him I was glad he was happy with the results. That detail landed me a $50 tip and a customer for life. My process is 2 gallons of distilled water, 2 OZ if ONRWW, I also fill an old Griot's 35 oz bottle with distilled water and 1/4 cap of ONRWW as a presoak for heavy areas. I use a microfiber wash mitt with the fingers all over it and soak it in the bucket and squeeze in the same fashion Yvan uses for the red sponge, maybe a little more wet so some product hits the paint before the mitt. Use the mitt's weight to pick up the dirt in a section and 2 MF towels, one to pick up most of the saturation and the other to buff the waxed surface left behind. Using distilled water if there are any water streaks left behind they dry without spotting.

Rich Beach I agree, I use the wash and wax version. I also finally have a big red sponge to try (took me ages to get being in England ). I've not seen anything bad with it yet, and the shine is great

I've been using onr for a few months and I love it. There's multiple ways you can use it as yvan said. I use a pre spray every time and microfibers to wipe it off, and never introduce a dirty microfiber back into the bucket. Folding it and always using a new side when needed. Only wiping in one direction and tilting the microfiber slowly with each pass. It's hard to judge it unless you've tried it. You can always pressure wash before hand to get extra dirt off if you're just getting into it and are worried. Its also a good time saver, and alternative for cold weather. I'm not a fan of washing my car outside using a 2 bucket method when it's well below freezing.

I purchased some Grout Sponges at the HomeDepot, saw someone recommend that many years ago on a forum, and from my experience using it, it works great. I took one of them and cut slits on it just like this BRG to use it on the bottom half of the car since its usually more dirty, so I use 2. No issues at all.

Just got my first 32oz bottle yesterday. Been using Chemical Guys Ecosmart waterless for about 2 years and was looking for something new. I may have put too much in a spray bottle (2 caps) of the product. I had a light layer of dirt on my trunk. Sprayed it and WOW!!! I could literally see the dirt separate!!!! Plus the lubricity is quite impressive! This may be my go to product from now on. Its not even half the price it costs for Chemical Guys Ecosmart!

hi, I am amazed by the innovative aspect ONR brings.. one question comes to mind though; since there is a residue left behind which one should buff off after the panel has been treated with ONR - does this mean this 'residue' will interfere with a sealant or coating and needs to be removed beforehand? (for example with a pre-wax cleaner or degreaserwipes?) Hoping for a response, since I am very interested and want to start incorporating ONR in my washing-routine. Greetings, F.

So you say in this Vid that ONR leaves behind polymers/residue that will make it easier to clean for subsequent washes. Other YT detailers say it doesn't leave anything behind. Does it or does it not leave behind polymers/residue, and will what it leaves behind affect the properties of whatever I used for protection?

Then after using the ONR on a full panel, take a scan grip hand light to it and show a close up shot to see if you created any micro scratches. Could be a coated or even non Ceramic coated car. If it's still flawless I am sold! I just ordered everything and going to try it out on a nightmare of a 15 mustang that had crazy amount of time correcting.

Yes I thought by adding a cap full and my favorite car wash that I would be doing 2 things at the same time. Foam after rinsing along with ONR for the long lasting lube while wiping down the car. I'm not trying to reinvent a perfect product just wanted to know your thoughts on this. My black truck gets really dirty I don't know where my wife be going lol but she really can get a clean car dirty quick . So I thought the 2 together with a rub down would nock 2 birds down at the same time.

Thanks Yvan for the video instruction! I've seen how some people rinse the Big Red Sponge in a separate bucket of water before they dip it back into the ONR solution. I assume that's not necessary since you showed how you dip the sponge back into the ONR to clean the sponge. I'm confused. Is there harm in rinsing the sponge in water first or is that just unnecessary altogether? 🤔
@A.S.8.9.
@A.S.8.9. 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not necessary as the goal is to reduce the water you use for washing your car. And the other downside is you’re going to further dillute ONR, and you dont want to do that.

Great question Alan. The difference is ONRWW(green) has carnauba wax in it. Its great for those that want to use it. I use it weekly in my home garage. They work together just fine. Think of it as a car wash soap, some come with Wax added, some don't. This is the basic difference. For those that are going to wash and then do some buffing and polishing they don't need the added wax version. i hope this makes sense?

At 5:28 if you pause you can see the swirls in that paint. Use ONR its a good product, but make no mistake if your car is dirty its gonna scratch. Period. ONR is great for those instances where you have a light dust on the paint a day or two after washing the car. Then its better than say a detail spray, but if my car is drity, as much as i like the product, ill stick to my "ben hur" methods.

2:00 - you say ONR leaves no residue but here you're saying "you're re-wetting the residue ONR left previously." Please elaborate. At the end you also said, "Washed and protected using ONR" but the blue ONR contains no protection...?

Martin Bowen After rewatching this video (just bought a BRS, figured I’d get a refresher) I was wondering the same thing. I’ve heard more lately that the Blue ONE doesn’t leave any residue behind. Still curious tho given what Ivan said in this video.

The surface is just rough, as always in the late-Autumn/Winter and a daily driver left without real care and comfort. Even when the surface is really dirty, but you are washing are car that hasn't been neglected, you won't hear a thing when washing with a suitable sponge (never one with silicone!).

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want it to be dripping wet. Since the ONR is "doing the work," more would seem better.

WHY did rubbing the sponge on the car sound like sanding? Would that not scratch EASY?!
@aarons7267

sardomnumspa that because the car has never been clay bar in it whole life since it was new. When you rub the paint it should be smooth and quiet but if not you need to clay bar it.

I just can't get it. That sponge breezing over the dirty panel just makes me cringe. its wiping across it before its even put any onr on so surely it being dragged across the paint on that initial pass is gonna make it scratch, even if subsequent passes are then lubricated with onr. I have the wash and wax version, but I simply use it as an additive to my 2 buckets to soften the water and give better lubrication on my 2bm, thus making the wash even safer, I also spray it onto the panel diluted first.

JonFFavale maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage to use it more freely. but until I can understand it's effects more and see them in the flesh I'll stick to the tried and tested and just use onr to enhance that

Why not have a separate rinse bucket to clean off the sponge before re-entering it into the ONR? Would keep ONR solution fresher longer!
@MasterOfShine
@MasterOfShine 7 жыл бұрын
You can do that if you like too. Just fill that extra bucket with ONR so you don't dilute your wash bucket by accident. The more often you use ONR, the more comfortable you will be. Thousands and thousands of hours have gone into testing ONR and the BRS. No need for a second bucket, because the products work that well.

I usually like this series, but this was a big no no. Very disappointing on the technique shown, that will scratch the hell out of the paint even if is lubricated with ONR. Also, the waffle weave, I wouldn't use it like that. I was hoping that at least the panels would have been pre-soaked with a spray bottle and ONR.

Elías Hdez you can do it however you like! ONR is that safe! No one in the history of the world uses it more than Yvan LaCroix! The man orders it in 55 gallon drums for his shop! This video is describing the standard operating procedure for ONR. You may modify it how you see fit! You may also use any medium to apply it! Whether it's TRC towels, BRS, or wash mitt! You can rinse the car off first, or pre soak as you suggest, or go straight from the bucket! That's the beauty of ONR! Trust the Science!!!
@eliashdez
@eliashdez 7 жыл бұрын
@Levi Gates, I'm truly skeptical that you won't get marrying or small scratches doing that way, unless the clear coat is hard or has some aftermarket coat on in. Would be nice if TRC makes a video that will test BRS with ORN on a black panel with soft paint and show how much actual marrying or swirls creates. If doesn't create any, well I guess you have convinced more people to jump on this technique and will be a win-win for everyone.
@eliashdez
@eliashdez 7 жыл бұрын
@JonFFavale, I don't have a problem with ONR but with the technique involved. I mean, Wolfgang Uber Rinseless Wash would have yielded the same results on the same situation showed on the video. But no matter what product you use, with that amount of dirt and moving it with the sponge, would have definitively created swirls or marrying on the paint.
