#175: On this episode of the #AskMikeReinold show we talk about some of the differences in our programs when someone has an allograft, instead of an autograft after ACL reconstruction. There are pros and cons of using an allograft, neither are best for every person, but understanding what we need to do different is the key. What about site morbidity? I’m scared I’m 17 I just retore my acl. I want to get back to competitive sports and I don’t know what graft to use. I’m thinking allograft because I used quad the first time and I feel like a patella graft would just forever weaken my leg way too much. What graft do y’all think I should use?

I, 30F got a mix of hamstring autograft and cadaver allograft, since my hamstring was not big enough. I am not an athlete, so I have time to heal properly.

The more I research the more confused I become on which graft is best for me. In my 20s I was a competitive bump skier, but while still active and still love skiing bumps and playing backyard basket ball and baseball with my kids, I am now 52 years old. I am scheduled for ACL reconstruction and recommended from the Steadman Clinic doctors to do an allograph. I am not a class 1 athelete, but I want to be active. What would you recommend based on my short story? Also, has anything improved or changed since this was posted 3 years ago?

There are tons of factors that go into it, but I still personally always recommend an autograft.

@@Mikereinold what is your opinion on conservative management ie no surgery and then return to sport? Seems to be the 'new fad' in my area/region. Thanks

I know this is old…. My surgeon was going to do hamstring, but apparently mine aren’t long enough. And I have osgood schlatter on both legs so patellar didn’t look good. Used allograft yesterday. I’m 5”4 f 40yo, recreational MTB mostly, wanted to play tennis next summer, was thinking of trail running. Thanks for the tips to take it slow but careful scaring people who don’t have another choice. Unless this vid was for doctors and not patients. Maybe my main sport this year will be the gym. And MTB with my brace.

Great video discussing the pros and cons of allograft! Thanks for posting this. I'm planning to choose allograft for my ACL, so good to understand what's involved here.

I got achilles allograft for my mcl, acl, pcl, lcl, because my leg was ripped in half and laid out of body for about 5 hours before I was found maybe 6 before reattached. What're the issues you think I may experience because I'm 2 weeks away from walking first

@@smartFunable I don’t think running or sports will be an option but I mean I’m doing jumps in physical therapy..I asked if I could go back to snowboarding and doctor said not a good idea..my physical therapist thinks it won’t be an issue at all..we’ll see though! I just convinced myself instead of sports and bikes anymore I guess it’ll just be fast cars and planes! Lol
