►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah, it'd mostly come down to how many turns could be saved with the higher damage outputs. Somehow at least one run would still have a gen1 miss loss to a zubat though.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I thought medium slow was quicker in the early game and overall better because of the limited exp in the early game. I suppose I should watch fewer videos and try doing more (but I suck at my overworld movement)

Yea this one was something I poured too much time into to get the sprites just right. It came out extremely well. I think my Regigigas work was a little better but this is a close second.

Well the 'secret' is that none of them are from scratch. If it's gen 4 or below, you can just devamp the sprites and if it's later than 4, there are wonderful people that have made all Pokemon in gen 3 style. You still need to devamp and add in the correct touch, but it's not like I'm picasso. I'm just taking 10/10 work and recreating it under the smaller and more limited Gen 1 pallet.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 hey, thanks for the honesty! Might be a worthy addition to the overlay on where/who you sourced the original sprite from, just to get some great artists more exposure. Don't discount the work you do too, though! Not everyone could devamp sprites

For sure. There are pokecommunity resource packs that everyone uses for hacks that I just download the folder and go to every once in a while. I haven't had to do it yet for my runs but I think crediting the pack is all you really need to do but I have my eye on some of them. No discounting here! Sometimes I have to combine other aspects, remove a ton of detail and size from the sprite but maintain the theme of it so I am doing something but it's just essentially placing blocks, haha.

You have to if you want them to compete with Mewtwo! Regular Gen 1 moves just wouldn’t cut it imo.

Great job on this one, Matt! I also wanted to say I agree with your reasoning on Ice being neutral to Fire type. Like with Bug and Poison being super effective against each other, Ice being neutral to Fire feels like an interesting quirk of Gen 1 more than anything. Like, there are lots of Fire moves and Ice moves and seeing how that lack of resistance is something you could easily have ran into playing vanilla, I think it should stay. This is contrasted by Psychic being immune to Ghost though, where I think fixing it was necessary for most Ghost mons. Cause like, there’s only one variable-damage Ghost move in the game, it’s a bad move, and you almost never would’ve kept it by the time you ran into a Psychic type? And in the next Gen, Ghost is now super effective rather than resisted? Like, it pretty clearly feels like Psychic/Ghost was a mistake as opposed to many other type matchups where it just feels like the devs were making silly gen 1 choices.

Thanks! I didn't really elaborate because I try to not ramble too much but Ghost looks like it was added last in the code of the game and I'm taking an educated guess that it was a last second addition to counter how strong Psychic was in what little testing they did. The problem is they set the value to a 0 instead of a 2 in the type chart and here we are. The other things seem clearly intentional but with the whole ghost interaction I can pinpoint examples of why it was just a little error. If you look at the anime during RBYs initial blowup, the theme of the Sabrina arc was to counter her with ghosts types.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I pumped my fist and said "hell yeah." The timesave between the final run and the prior run was pretty impressive, and I'm glad it managed to beat Mewtwo! Kinda reminds me of the battle between Mewtwo and Mega Charizard X in Pokemon Origins.

I went with X for the difference. To me Y was a little same-y and basically just turned into "Charizard but a little better" and it wasn't as interesting. It might be something to look at in the future but no plans as of yet!

Honestly, you could've just started and ended with "it's fun" to anyone who criticizes cross-gen runs. I'm normally not impressed by things like Mega Evolutions and Gigantamax, but then again I never played the games they exist in. Thus, my point for or against how cool they are in actual play is moot. All I know is that Mega 'Zard X scratches a similar itch as Alolan Marowak for its design -- close to the original but stands out, and manages to make darker colors look cool and not edgy. Plus, Fire / Dragon fits each other like a glove. Cool to see it negated Misty's super-effective edge! And I do have to say, Shadow Claw is one of my favorite Pokemon moves overall. It's adjacent to, but cannot quite replace, Shadow Ball. That one's probably in my top three faves. Either way, it's cool to see the Claw get its potent niche use here.

For sure. Also, 'it's my channel and it is something I enjoy' also works but I try not to pull that card that much since it is a community. Like I couldn't stream 5 hours of Rimworld and expect that excuse to work but there's always someone haha. If you stream, someone would rather have a video. If you do gen 2, someone wants gen 1. If you do a good Pokemon, they'd rather you do a bad Pokemon. If you play Zubat, they wonder why you aren't doing an A tier Pokemon. It goes on and on.

Charizard x is my favorite Charizard form,and you did an incredible job on these sprites ,and of course the nickname was a nice reference to Yu-Gi-Oh 's blue eyes white dragon 😂😂😂. I love the way the you explain the major time loses in general,how they are coming into play in this specific run. Who would have thought that using the rare candys at the mid game was the right call or grinding on a wild Ratatta at the very start. These small optimizations made Charizard x a top tier pokemon, which is always awesome to watch . In regards to the gen 1 type chart , I personally prefer it as it is, because it's a game mechanic much like the badge boost glitch,and losing that will lose the gen 1 flavor.🤔 I really appreciate that you took the time to do your best. Because sometimes making the best content you could is better than to editing a run your not that sure of. 😊

Yea I was in a bit of a funk. I fully recorded the video thinking it was just good enough but a lot of things were a little off and the looking back at Lorelei being so easy at 55 was the final straw. I'd much prefer the first run to be perfect but nothing rarely is! For the type chart, Ghost was added really late and they just fumbled the ball and there's lots of evidence for it but buy/poison interaction or fire/ice interaction are things I really don't ever want to touch. I'm fine with the ghost fix just because there's only Lick in the base game and it's cool to see them do stuff. Honestly you'd be better off ignoring Ghost types if you wanted interesting gen 1 cross gen content in that case. I always take the time and I notice I've been doing it more lately. I just don't want to release a video, realize I missed something big and have to scramble to do a redo stream or something like that. I want it to be done when it's done lol. Views be damned lol.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Same here about everything almost basically 😂. I'd prefer to release a good video then a bunch that I'm not sure if they are good enough or not. Because in the end I would want to do my best,and become better and better. The point of a cross gen run in gen 1 is to have a similar experience if that pokemon was introduced in these games. To me the ghost typing is part of that experience. Anyways keep up the good work, because I don't mind waiting for one of the best solo run content.😊 here

Yo GLM did you know in Gen 1 you can catch the Pokemon that would normally be in the grass below Pallet town in the Surfable water by it, I've got it to work by riding against the pillars on the far left near the encounter grass! Great video btw hope we see more Megas!

Oh boy, a fast mixed attacker in a generation where you can max all stats and where critical hits depend on base speed, sounds like a great run Fun fact: because of its ability, Mega Charizard X's attack stat is actually higher than 130 when using a contact move However, coding "contact moves" sounds like hell, and simply raising its attack stat will give even Earthquake a boost it shouldn't get Honestly, really impressive you were able to add new mons and new moves,

Yea I have morphed the assembly a lot but I decided to leave abilites, natures, and some effects out to avoid the headache. It took me a monstrous amount of time to get self debuffing moves to work correctly and, while it's cool to see things added in, I'd much rather play the game and make content rather than be buried in code.

I thought about the gen 2 cross gen but I'm not sure how interesting it would be. I'm dipping my toes into regular gen 3 now with normal runs but that won't be ready for a bit. It sounds cool but the gen 3 decomps are a different beast with DMA and encryption. What I'll eventually have out for videos I have already heavily modified but the hoops and memory address changes were headache enough as it is lol.

Truely one of the mixed attackers of all time. This is really interesting though, it really doesn’t have the umph without tough claws but and its super funny that it’s actually weak to ice, but then again so it regular charizard, not worth fixing, this is intended. This made me to check if any of the ghost types start with shadow claw and have enough speed to ensure a crit, the answer is yes but it’s only hisuian zoroark and ceruledge lol Cool run! Hope things are going well with the baby, man!

I've had my eye on the typing of Hisuian Zoroark for a while, tbh. It looks pretty nasty but I just haven't gotten around to it. Soon I'm going to make a channel post going over the baby, life changing, and moving to a bi-weekly schedule but I'll also be release my tentative plans for the summer. I'll probably do it later in the week, I'm too exhausted atm lol.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 H-zoroark is a really interesting Pokémon that’s never really had a chance to shiny, it’s typing, stats and move pool are all really unique. Also it literally can’t take super effective damage in Gen 1 and has 3 immunities lol. I’m sure you’re wiped out, take your time man.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Obviously get to it when you get to it, you’ve got a lot on your plate lol, but it is pretty cool and I think zoroark is pretty popular so it will probably do well as a video. Yeah, idk how you’d render its mane/hair tentacles in a back sprite, that’s tough. I’m really curious how you’d handle the learn set though, the gen 9 level up learn set is very different from the PLA one, it learns way less normal moves for some reason, they changed the way bitter malice works completely and a lot of its coverage moves are TMs that don’t exist in Gen 1. But hey, swords dance and body slam so it might not matter.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 bitter malice in PLA was completely nuts, 60 BP ghost move that doubled in power of the target had a status and a 30% chance to inflict frostbite/freeze, but they changed it to 75 BP and it lowers the target’s attack by one stage so there’s basically no reason to use it. Choice, killer the flavor.

Thanks! Yea, I did a lot of work on the sprite. It's one of the best I've personally done but Mewtwo is definitely crazy in gen 1. People request the mega of Mewtwo but they don't understand that it's gen 1 set IS its strongest iteration.

dig is still effectively full power in singleplayer because your opponent will never switch in order to dodge it. it only takes twice as long as a downside.

Well what I mean is that it takes two turns, meaning that the 100 base power is effectively 50 per turn. Taking twice as long is the downside and there's a reason no one has ever looked at Solar Beam or Sky Attack and thought 'that's a great move!' lol.

I think so too. Once you understand it's competing against Mewtwo and just seeing how each stack up and the perceived advantages are given to everyone, then I become invested too lol.

11:25 When I was a kid, I didn't understand why the player character couldn't just move around or climb over the two Snorlaxes. I know Snorlax is big and fat, but it's not a cube of flesh that takes up every centimeter of the path is it? Perhaps the Snorlaxes backhand anyone that dares get too close and it isn't shown in the game. XD

~7:29 -- a few thoughts: 1. another reason for runs like these is simply as a tech demo to show just what is possible in Gen 1 with a little bit of technical expertise, and that's a good enough reason for me (also, I kind of LIKE seeing the over powered pokemon, frankely) 2. Dig, it's ranking depends on the kind of run and it's only in the contending at all for top slows in Gen 1, in Gen 2 they nerf it and again in Gen 3. Besides being an HM, I think it serves one other major purpose: the invincibility turn, which is VERY useful against exploding trainers like Dudly/The Exploding Hiker and Red/Blue Koga. In general, though for speed you are right, and in general Earthquake is almost ALWAYS superior (save for exploding trainers against pokemon that can't survive explosion -- my Ratata comes to mind)

That Bruno bait & switch is pretty clever. Definitely agree with the weak pokémon runs; they end up feeling very samey and predictable. I watch your runs for how unique and interesting they are. There are plenty of other KZfaqrs who do those runs with weak Pokémon anyway.

And the thing is that I do those runs too! There’s people who like the Crystal runs, people who prefer worse Pokémon, and people who like the titans from other games like this one. Can’t please them all lol. There’s a reason I stopped taking requests. It was about 3 years ago and it was Ditto and Zubat back to back weeks lol.

I'm just talking out of my ass without real testing but there's a bit of diminishing returns on stats. Realistically Mewtwo's regular special is already untouchable and at what point does it even matter if you have like 180? I think if you got something with Psystrike and maybe some other OP psychic move it could be it. I probably won't work on it anytime soon since I've been super busy and have my summer lined up but Mega Mewtwo Y does sound fun. I had plans to do Mewtwo Crystal after the summer and maybe I'll push it back but I think the algorithm loves Mewtwo so we'll have to see lol.

7:05 I think Dig is a little better than just “average of 50 base power” I’d rather hit dig than twice with a 50 base power move, and I’m not just talking about the invulnerability turn. If Dig can one shot, then it doesn’t give your opponent the chance to heal, which can make a huge difference at the right time.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Absolutely, it’s still not a great move, especially on Charizard X which has a bunch of other great coverage moves. For times runs like what you do, it’s only useful as coverage, but in a regular playthrough it is much better than “Average 50 base power”. If you outspeed and one shot, you’ve taken no damage, even if it took two turns to do it. Bulldoze twice would open you up to at least some chip damage, or possibly a status inflicting move. It’s not a great move, but it’s better than if it were just a regular 50 basepower move ground move.

It’s a necessary move in every run for sure, even if not used by your main Pokémon. It’s great but the point is that it’s only great because they shafted ground variety hard. I like Gen 2 giving mud slap early but don’t like the Dig nerf or hiding EQ at the elite 4.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 yeah, Gen 2 Dig Nerf was definitely too much. I think 80 power like it is today would is a good middle ground and not too OP for Gen 2, but still useful coverage. I think today it could be 90 or 100 again and still not be OP. But for most Gen 1 Pokémon that get Dig, it’s a great move, and is more useful than most other 50BP moves would be, in my opinion.

Also considering things like EQ being able to hit it underground and other things like Magnitude makes it even less appealing so I think 100 again would be fine. The 60 bp in gen 2 makes it more of a side grade to Mud Slap, tbh. 30 base power average over two turns with an invulnerable turn versus 20 base power with a guaranteed accuracy drop.

This isn't related to this video but a thought entered my mind after watching exeggcutor. For Pokemon unable to reliably light year trainer train, would it be worthwhile to go to the grass below pewter and take out a few Pokemon and get damaged a bit, then go to the gym and hopefully lose with the decreased health? It's not a total time waste because you'd train on wild Pokemon anyway. If you always one shot, you can get down to struggle and take damage that way.

It depends on the level. The problem is that you'd barely get hurt at a certain point. For some Pokemon even level 10 is enough to steamroll any wild Pokemon and you'd be fighting like 20-40 wild battles to even get to struggle. I'm sure there's some Pokemon that might make a case for that though but I haven't came across it yet.

This genuinely makes me wonder how regular charizard would be if its type was changed to Fire/Dragon in modern games. It would probably need to get draco meteor, and with choice specs/solar power combo it would probably nuke a ton of stuff. Would also drop its 4x rock weakness for only a 2x ground weakness, which feels like a fair trade.

Hey Brother. Haven’t finished the video yet, just got to the highest density cluster of battles in the game, and I wanted to ask about your line about not going into the inventory to use potions. At what point would it be faster to use a guaranteed ohko move like flare blitz and then heal after with a potion? For example, let’s say you had tackle and double edge. If tackle was a 3 hit ko and double edge was a 1 hit ko, that’s only a two turn difference. But if there were 3 Pokémon like that in a row, would saving the 6 turns at the cost of the potion time be faster?

I do something similar at the end with Giovanni’s gym. It was faster to take all the damage and push on but I skipped the potion. It’s a person to person type of question. It depends on how comfortable you are with menuing and how fast you pick moves!

I thought this was going to be for competitive. Funnily I don’t think Zard X would be that good in RBY OU, even if it got 130 Special. It would be bulky, but with only Rest as a recovery option it couldn’t abuse it that much (though it does get reflect… hmmm…). It’s typing is just really bad too, Weaknesses to Blizzard and Earthquake are not great, no Dragon STAB, and Fire is one of the worst offensive types in RBY. Its saving grace is Swords Dance and that Body Slam + Earthquake is perfect neutral coverage in this Gen, but no STAB on either is :S Probably: Swords Dance / Body Slam / Earthquake / Hyper Beam is your best bet, with Reflect, Rest, Fire Blast and Fire Spin being interesting but gimmicky options to slot over Hyper Beam. It probably would be pretty good, but not top tier. It’s a kind of better Kingler/Pinsir

It would be but it’s such a Wild West. The sad thing is that it would be controlled under the most popular ruleset if it ever got popular, which wouldn’t be me. I’m not a huge fan of x4, real time tbh. There’s too much onus on the player to be perfect over a long stretch of time and the shortcuts and lazy overworld movements you can get away with or just don’t matter don’t sit right with me. Seeing people not use the bike and not see any significant drawback feels weird. Rant aside, they’ve done some randomizers that are cool but solo running and what’s hot is definitely just what Scott or Jrose does at the time with 3,000 parrots repeating it after.

I think they will. Let's hope so anyway. Dynamax is a little different. With mega you do have to transform but it lasts indefinitely but dynamax it's like 3 turns or something close to that. I do like the idea a little bit though.

I will push the algorithm and also push against Dig not being that good. Against a human, it's pretty mediocre, as the lost turn is pretty detrimental, but the AI in RBY is pretty trash, so it's not like going underground will cause a switch or the opponent to set-up. If you're abusing glitches, its one of the most broken moves in the game. 100 BP is also a lot more in gen 1 than anywhere else, especially in the same town as Gym 2. Most types have mediocre BP for even their best attacks. High Jump Kick was just 85 in addition to being Hitmonlee exclusive, Sludge was the best poison attack at 65, Ghost and Dragon were fixed damage and a BP 10, Rock Slide was 75 BP with 90 accuracy. Even some of the normal moves that you'd expect to outdamage from playing other gens are lower, like Thrash (90) and Double-Edge (100) just don't. That said, overpowered pokemon don't need that extra wasted text.

Dig is great as an honorary HM and it’s also a solid move. You are right, the turn wasting and text adds up specifically in a solo run but, for example, if they had a similar equivalent around the same time like Bulldoze, it’s use would go down. The tldr that I didn’t articulate well is that it’s Dig or nothing with no variety or options. It’s only good because it’s all there is until Silph.

Very focused on the comparisons to Mewtwo, but I can't help but wonder, how's it compare to vanilla Charizard? Like, obviously it SHOULD be faster, as a Mega it should have beefed up stats. But how impactful was that? How impactful was the type change? Hell arguably it and regular Charizard should have the same learnset (it's the same mon after all, not like it gets a different movelist), so how would it fare with that move access?

I guess the answer is that every Pokemon would fare better with a modern moveset. Gen 1 and 2 infamously has awful learnsets but vanilla Charizard is currently a top 6 Pokemon with a 96.66 rating. Cross gen is just a different thing for me. Mewtwo is unmatched and it's just cool to see how close a Pokemon can get to that and ultimately the any % speedrun record.

I wasn't disparaging your choices, Mewtwo and Alakazam are THE bars by which Gen 1 times are measured. It makes sense to compare to the top slot when the expectation is to have near that level of performance. I just also like seeing how it fares up against the direct parallel. Like if you were to import Sirfetched, I'd want to see it's comparison to Farfetched as well just to see how much of an improvement it is. Gives some context I suppose.

I think saying Dig is effectively a 50 BP move is a bit disingenuous because of the immunity turn. It's basically a one turn 100 BP move with ~8 extra lines of text.

On a weaker Pokemon scared to take any damage, sure. I don't think it is disingenuous though. It's 100 base power over 2 turns. Just like Fly equals out to 35 power per turn or Solar Beam averages out to 60 power a turn. The immunity turn for dig is situationally useful but in terms of time spent, 2 turns is 2 turns and it really adds up. The point is that Dig is thought of so highly because that's...all there is. There's no other options outside EQ when you are over halfway through the game.

I'm sure if you did like 10+ runs and knew the exact HP and where to use them to go down to red bar it certainly could. I have things fairly optimized but it's over the course of like 3-5 runs so details that fine I normally don't take into account. It's definitely not like reading a world record speedrun route spreadsheet lol.

i dont think you would have survived using flare blitz against the last battle exceggutor, cuz 202hp /3 is rougly 67ish, unless i got it wrong and its divided by 4, but as i recall flare blitz recoil is 1/3 of the damage dealt!

Recoil in Gen 1 is a quarter. I’d love to redo more effects but in the case of something like recoil or stat drop chances, it’s infinitely less tedious to just use what’s already in the game. I paused the voiceover and did the math lol.

Plz read whole thing this is a point for gen I and II Actually dig is quite essential in most charmander based play through’s of the game, I’ve played RBGY through over twenty times in my 19 years, the reason dig is good is skipping damage from powerful opponents, and is the reason Diglett is its best user, it’s incredible speed, above average attack, and stab dig make it great even in gen II with Crits and dig gimped

Why Mew? Several Pokemon have outperformed it. Mew isn't even in the equation for the cross gen runs.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Based on algorythmic stat maxes on gen1 red game, 255 is the max value a stat can have. So mew has a max acheiveable stat of 255 in each value, So if you max it to the gills it is literally the ceiling in red gen 1, not including gimmick cheats or glitches. So if you translated a Charizard X stats into the limited parameters of Red gen 1s algorithm, it cannot be more overpowered then a maxed out mew. mathematically speaking.

I think you are confusing base stats and actual stats. Mew just has 100 out of 255 in every stat. Chansey has 250 HP but no other Pokemon has a stat at even 200. With boosting moves, you can reach the max stat, which is actually 999, but Mew's base stats will never change no matter what and Mew does nothing different than any other Pokemon to achieve that. The correlation between stats and what not don't really have anything to do with a speedrun. If something has to go to even the mid 70s to beat the game, it's already down in the ranks.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 but didn't you double attack stat for huge power (or am I misremembering)? You could just adjust move base power to fake tough claws, or base power and type effectiveness for perma-drought

I did it once but I’m hesitant since Diggersby is one of my worst performing videos of all time lol. Picking and choosing abilities gets muddy and none seems like the correct play.

I went with X specifically because Y is just Charizard but more, down to the similar design. Maybe one day though! Never say never.

Congrats MegaZard X for surpassing Mewtwo and reaching 2nd place on your second run. I didn't think MZard X could pull it off, but it did. I just goes to show you what optimizing can really do for a Pokemon's run no matter how little, also real one.

Yea it did great. I was just playing so bad during the first run and still did great. I knew if I just got it together and used the bike correctly and made a few adjustments, I could do work. The level 55 Lorelei was an awful idea lol.

I tried to use the search function and couldn't find any such interaction! I've been working on the sprites and idea for over a year now and that doesn't sound right considering the Charizard redo video is only like 6 months old but even if I did, it's an important reminder that opinions and ideas can change and what someone said 6 months ago might not reflect what they think now!
