The use of pallets in storage areas can drastically change the fire load of the commodity being stored. Pallets vary in their construction materials and can be wood, metal, or plastic, and they can be either reinforced or unreinforced. For Class I through Class IV commodities, the commodity classification might have to be increased depending on the pallet type.
Pallets with fuel characteristics similar to wood might not increase the commodity classification, while certain types of reinforced plastic pallets might increase the commodity classification by 2.
Lastly, flat-bottom pallets that are solid and combustible, or “slave pallets,” have their own dedicated requirements outlined in NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.
