How Pavement "did in" Lollapalooza - West Virginia, 1995

Pavement's performance gets a poor reception - a shower of mud and rocks - on the Charles Town, West Virginia stop of the 1995 Lollapalooza tour. Pavement's Bob Nastanovich and Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg, and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, theorize how the performance may have contributed to the eventual demise of the festival. From Matador's "Slow Century" DVD.

I was at this show, and I felt so humiliated by these actions. I really wanted to see the band play, as this was true alternative music during that time. None of these people who were in the front at that show had ever heard of or seen 120 Minutes before...they knew absolutely nothing about good music. Going to Lollapalooza...especially in a backwoods place where there is nothing else to do in town..was just the thing to do by that time. Hell, I think I saw just about everyone from my high school there...and none of them were in to alternative music. Pavement were right...Lollapalooza was no longer alternative by this time anymore. These people weren't even there for the music anymore. They were just there because it was the "thing to do" and then talk about in school.

We drove up from Leesburg. I remember the heat and Beck's set but not this moment. I remember some kid walking through the crowd as Hole played screaming "You ki**ed KURT!" Still have the live version of I Wanna Get High that Cypress Hill recorded there. They performed it twice and asked the audience to go extra nuts for it, lol

I remember seeing them on the second stage, I think here in Charlotte(i think this was like 93 or so) and they were playing "Forklift" and I already knew most of it, so I lost my shit when I realized they were playing one of my favorite songs and couldnt help but just bounce to that one the whole way through. It was divine, at least for me it was.

I was there an it was all and all a great overall event in my opinion. It was VERY hot to the point that my best friend just got ill and decided to just sit in a corner while the rest of us partied through the day. The fire hose they used to spray the crowd was insane. I didn't expect to be pummeled by water but that is the feeling you get from the amount of water they were pumping through but again, it was soo hot that it was a needed drenching that many of us welcomed.

I never got in to Pavement and I was only 3 years old when this happened. They’re still really well known. Slanted & Enchanted is popular album loved by many and inspired a lot of musicians that I love. Seems like a buncha losers had to be immature and couldn’t handle Pavements set. I don’t really see how any of this can be pinned on Pavement.

Lollapalooza was cool when it first started, then it turned to shit after 1995. It got lame when dumb ass wannabes started to go to Lollapalooza shows because it was getting trendy and it was cool to like that kind of music. I remember for Lollapalooza 1994 when I bought my ticket I had cash and I bought about 8 extra tickets. The years before 1994 the festival didn’t sell out as much but I had a good feeling about that years lineup. The festival eventually sold out right away after a few days. On the day of the show I went early around noon and there was a shit load of people outside the gate trying to get in the super sold out show. And I had about 8 extra tickets. When people outside the fence saw that I had extra tickets all of them rushed toward the chain link fence begging me for a ticket. Money talks. I ended up selling a $30 ticket for about $100-$200 dollars. I sold one for about $50 cuz the girl was cool. But I made over $1000 that day on about $250 of tickets. I remember friends asking me why I bought so many extra tickets. Lollapalooza 1994 has the best line up EVER. Those were the days.

it is so funny how much i love that song zurich is stained and that was part of an antagonistic buildup. as more of a crooked rain fan it's funny to be like...sorry for the melodically beautifully "lo-fi" style played over sly lyrics. but this is us and you can't judge everything on it's own merits but. really, let's be honest, it really just comes down to people being hot and aggravated with a woodstock green day means to protest if for no reason than to protest too much. idk i type.

It does suck for Pavement that they got pummeled by the mud. I don't think I saw that happen and I'm displeased to see the way my neighbors act. The crowd that was there was a mix and there was a lot of jock types that just came to mosh to some of their favorite radio songs and their idea of moshing is beating each other up. I had a good time and wish there was more video of the day that I could find.
