Very informative video...66 years old and I have learned something useful today. Have been pellet gun hunting for about 60 years and did not know this...grin...now I know which pellets to use in my rifle...thank you for your work!

A lot of people really don't understand the science behind it so you explaining this in depth is awesome, I myself have experimented with many different pellets for my break barrels and I've found that the 10.6 grain crosman copper magnum Diablo style pellets work best for my guns. I've used everything from gamo red fire pellets all the way to crosman hollow points and none seemed to carry very good tragectory. As for pills for pcp airguns I have yet to experience the difference as I do not own one.

Great vid. I'd love to see this topic revisited where you start talking about increasing projectile weight (or decreasing it) to tune the projectile to the distance and twist of a particular gun. Projectile shape (long-slender, short-fat) and projectile weight, AND twist rate, all work together in the 'stabilization' circus.

Very informative video, I had only seen Ted's Holdover video explain the importance of too much fps (850-900max if remember) can cause destabilisation of the projectile. Just getting back into airgun shooting and learning something new every day. Subscribed... :)

Your videos are great. I have 2 years of college level Physics and a Bachelor of science Electrical engineering and at minimum, double the amount of years of experience shooting. I have seen your presentation on bullet behavior from other imaginary experts. There are no physics equations that predict any spinning object becomes OVER-STABILIZED from to much rotation, even if the center of gravity is off center. The exact opposite is predicted by actual physics. The faster any object spins the more stable and resistant to change it becomes. If it is out of balance the rotational force can exceed the outward force caused by the imbalanced center of gravity. When you sum the vectored forces the effect is not a wobbling spiral. Wobbling spirals are caused from not enough spin to properly stabilize, not to much spin. The bottom line is the faster anything spins, even out of balance the more stable it becomes. The only ways this is ever not correct, is when the speed of the bullet is fast enough to cause the bullet to be stripped by the rifling, where heat, friction, or centrifugal force causes the bullet to melt or loose its shape changing how air friction acts on the bullet during it's flight. Shooting lightweight bullets in high twist rates causing them to become over-stabilized is mythological nonsense. I have shot .224 40 grain out of a custom 1 in 6 twist and they are not over stabilized from to much spin. Spin drift is also myth.The bullet is spinning perpendicular to the direction of force that spin effects movement of the spinning object and the net force is zero, equaling zero spin drift. One would have to have the bullet spinning off perpendicular to direction of travel for spin drift to happen. And your statement about rate of spin changing during flight was off. The RPM will remain the same through flight unless friction from air acts in a way to reduce RPM. The RPM remains the same and is independent of velocity.

Hello Matt. I have also been delving into the study of air rifle ballistics for quite a while and have to agree with you on every point. That most pellets are over spun, manufacturers not knowing what they doing and the subtle importance of velocity in both spin and aerodynamically stabilized projectiles. Running many simulators and have found a few sweet spots in both designs. Slug research was very advanced in Germany in WW2 for heavy artillery. Even by today's standards. Just unfortunate there was never a crossover in tech to the smaller arms. By adapting that research into air rifle tech I think there is a lot we can gain from it. A sort of highly aerodynamically stable slug with extremely high bc. The other concept I would like to test is how accurate a completely smooth bore air rifle can be using modern tech. In the simulators I'm using, there is a relationship for springers between piston mass and barrel friction. By cutting down on friction, you can have a corresponding massive decrease in piston weight. Hoping a choke with smooth bore may offer the very low values required (or an fx barrel), and the needed velocity to make it more stable than the air rifles of old. Pellet quality a given though. Found a way to have high quality blanks made cheaply too. If you interested, it would be great to share some ideas and concepts. :)

Excellent Matt i was waiting for this for a long time i knew for a long time that some thing was going on with the air rifle's barrels. being retired from the firearms industry i know the importance of the twist rate on the barrels and bullet weight , i would like to see FX offer replacement barrels for other air rifle manufactures , or maybe other company's should start changing their process, thank you for a great video.

Hello Matt, thanks for your very explicit videos and valuable information. I write you because I would like your opinion, I have an FX Crown cal .25 and when I did the chrony tests I gave on average 277 Mt / sg (909 fps) the output speed, using JSB Exact King .25 of 25.39 gr. I use a Mira Aztec esmerald. I use a couple of applications, Strelok and Chairgun to guide me at different distances. I did the zeroing in 50 meters and I realized that when firing at 100 meters, making the compensation that the software indicated was not accurate, with a difference of 1 or 1.5 mildot. I did tests to calculate the BC and it gave me different to the one suggested by these programs, which is based on the point of impact at 70 meters and I made the adjustments and I coincided perfectly with the mildew of the sight at any distance. Later I did chrony tests again and the exit velocity with the same pellets was 250 mts / s (820 fsp) and I recalculated the BC by the difference in speed with the first time. With all this story, help me answer: 1.- Is it normal for differences in the speed of departure in each use of the rifle week by week? 2.- Whenever one is going to use the rifle should chrony tests be done and calculate the BC? I have never done any shooting course, nor the use of airguns, I have only learned watching videos and some theory that I have read on the web. I wait your answer Thank you so much

when I was firing the casing from shotgun shells out of my rifled barrel for my paintball I saw very much what you're describing being most my cameras will film a Max of about 60 frames per second this is the only example but I believe it was more because of the ripples on the shotgun shell gripping the air and pulling it around like nuts it was definitely very interesting to watch

You need to talk to some of the small bore guys and guys at Bartlien barrels about gain twist barrels. The soft lead your using would work really well for it from what I've read
