Regarding driving on ice roads, check out the North American television reality series Ice Road Truckers. Odyssey is nothing compared to the huge loads transported on ice.

I find your channel so interesting. You remind me of my daughter, she is a triathlete and has traveled the world for the last 20 years. She is in Switzerland right now snowboarding with her dog, she sends me pictures of all of her adventures. You both amaze me.

I grew up in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Many Swedish and Finnish people settled here and we also continue that Suana experience. It is amazing. I loved running out and jumping int the snow to cool off only to need to run back in to warm up.

I wholeheartedly did NOT want this episode to end Eva! I could bask in your storytelling with these Sami for 24hrs straight! P.S. I can totally relate with the nervousness of entering a social atmosphere after wild camping alone for so many weeks, but looks like your social skills and camera confidence blended quite nicely with their natural ambiance. Both lunch and supper looked exquisite!!! 🌿 Looking forward to more Sami storytelling in the future 🥰

Again I appreciate your openness and sincerity. This post is a satisfying interlude in your normal set of strenuous adventures. Since I have become older and not completely well I have become much more sensitive to the cold. Although this Winter in New England has been relatively warm I have been cold since November. I am amazed by your tolerance. I am looking forward to Spring and Summer. If you ever decide to settle someplace your future as a storyteller and video producer are certain. Your presentations are done just right. You tell the story and use the video to simultaneously illustrate what you are saying. That takes talent and dedication. Thank You, Love., GregW

Loved this episode! Driving on an ice road on the ocean. Yikes! You are a Viking Princess!. You are so natural and relaxed and jovial in your narrative. I have been an Actor for the last forty years. You might be surprised how difficult it is for an Actor to be themselves. You certainly seem honest and real. congrats on your Nat Geo Show! You should have a recurring show on NAT Geo. Eva up here the ice gets thick, car manufacturers come to Arvidsjaur from all sorts of countries to have winter tests up here and they also drive on an ice track that is a plowed lake. Winter tires from tire manufacturers are also tested there. The ice up here will be at least 50 cm thick and thicker ice.

I would recommend around march - beginning of april to avoid the really dark and super cold part of winter.

Lived way north of there, out of Karasjok, and traveled on migration with 2,000 Reindeer to Mageroy, 300 km away, I just skied, sat on the sled, and joik'd. My partner sold all her Reindeer to remember the past. She had a Historical memory. Shellac on my skis, wax, and go. That I did, an auger to drill through the ice, and presto, orret (trout) for food, and smoked reindeer meat for other meals. Loved it, and then more chanting, as that is how you remember. Love it more. All Best Eva...........Oops! and, Chappat (black) a famous dog that hitched around North Norway on his own, buses ferries, cars, slept beside me on migration, we just whispered to each other.........My first dog back in NZ was a black Labrador, called,? got it!

Wow. What more can one say! This is going to be one of my favorite videos of your travels so far. I hate the cold, so it's interesting that my other favorite is of you traveling the ferry for 4 days in Alaska. That ice road made me think of crossing the Chesapeake Bay bridge where parts of it are built under the bay. As you're approaching those tunnels the sensation is that you're driving straight into the ocean!! Crazy crazy stuff. Thanks again for taking us along on your fabulous adventures!!

Thank you for documenting and presenting my native country in such a wonderful and warm way! There is a lot of hidden gems when you are turning south again so don’t rush too fast on the way back as also the spring slowly will meet you on the way down.

Another amazing venture in a pristine setting! Would have never known there was such as a place as Huuva Hideaway until you went there. Those people have a beautiful home and a tranquil life, despite the cold.

This is one of my favorites,I was in a village in the Artic Circle, that was called “Artic Circle”with a Bush Pilot that I had met a few days earlier in Anchorage, it was beautiful watching the River and landscape from the plane, but the village was all dirt roads and sheds. It’s much prettier where you were & the food looked great too. I had a lot of Reindeer, mostly sausage, they even served it on the Train I rode to Barrow (I think) where the huge Oil Spill was years ago & you could still see it where the rocks were discolored. Exon Valdez, maybe it was called. People dig huge holes beside Creeks in the winter, then they start fires in the bottom, then cover them with a layer of dirt and rocks, then they knock the wall down and let the water in from the Creek & have their own homemade Hot Tubs, they’re everywhere!!

I used to live in Luleå and have driven my car on the very same ice road several winters. But it is a cool feeling.😊 A little hole or even a crack would not be a problem at all. A traktor or a truck can use the road until they close it for the winters season as long as you obey the road restrictions. People use the road to move objects to big or to heavy to move in the summer by boat. And yes, 'öppen' means that the road is open. 'Stängd' means the road is close for traffic (= The ice is no longer safe for vehicles) When I was young, I used a kicksledge ( We call them Spark, or Sparkstötting) to travel 3km to and from school in the winter period. I hated when the manucipalty put gravel on the roads for the cars not to slip.😂 That totally prevented a good kickslegde run. The kicksledge got stuck om the gravel corns and you almost fell over when the speed was reduced from 20 km/h to 2 km/h instantly.

After the sauna, naked of course, you should take a bath straight into the snow an rush back into the sauna again to warm up. So nice, except when the snow cover is too hard, the you scratch your skin hard.

As a Swedish southerner I've only recently and randomly come to learn more about the Sami, their culture and the extent of the injustice they suffered. Most Swedes are so unaware and it's a huge shame. Thank you for highlighting them in your travels.

There is interesting museum about same culture and northern nature in northern Finland place called Inari. It is called Siida. Highly recommend a visit if you happen to be close by.

Fascinating, and beautiful storytelling. Such a gift, to be offered intimate warm hospitality by Pia and Henry, and their space held so beautifully by your presence, all the sacred relational feels watching your interactions. I love how excited Vilk is to roll in the snow. I grew up in Manitoba, Canada, and have been out of the freezing for 25 years; this helps me appreciate many aspects of where I come from, but I sure don't miss that achy feeling of cold in the bones! It's interesting ... every time your video pops out on KZfaq and I see it's around 20 minutes long I think to myself ... "well, it's too long, I'm only watch for a minute or two". And then everytime I watch the whole episode. You are one of a kind KZfaqr, the videos you create by yourself are actually better and more educational than most travel shows one can watch on TV. My grandmother was Swedish Southern Sami. What a wonderful stay, Sami have lived there for thousands of years in harmony with nature.

Great video! You missed the best part of a Northern Minnesota, Finnish style sauna. You're supposed to run naked from the sauna and jump into a hole cut in the ice of the lake, or at the very least, jump into fresh, deep snow.

Beautiful! What a lovely family and amazing photo of the great grandfather! We were in Swedish part of Lapland a few years ago, and loved meeting and learning about Sami culture.

The reason for the distance between vehicles when driving on the ice road is the ripple effect of water under the ice. Can potentially cause blow outs when nearing the edges where the ice meets land. And of course the combined weight of vehicles.

The ice road is a stressful way of life! If Eva saw the Ice Truckers series on the History Channel, they serve remote communities in Canada’s far north where its too expensive or impractical to service by plane or helicopter. People have to put their lives at risk because without them, such places of human habitation would be long gone.

Yes, but this is primarily for heavier vehicles, not so much for cars on thick ice. There will be a pit in the ice around the vehicle. For a heavy vehicle the pit will be deeper and if the speed is too high the ice can break in front of the car. Have happened when they transport timber with large trucks.

I would only with one or two other vehicles be on the ice road. If you have a Problem no administration or others are there. Very dumb to drive alone.

About 10 years ago I've been i Finland and the actually said that many people use sauna and cold bath in the morning to get a kick start for the day :) I've never checked if that's popular opinion or just people I've talked to. What i liked most there was a smoke sauna- a little hut in the wood, i walked there barefoot on the snow from the main bigger sauna (that was great) and to cool down we were tossing ourselves into the snow - ❄️ what a feeling!😅
