For those who have watched football for the past decade know that Ancelotti looks better than he actually is. This Man City team was not invincible, the first match Real could have easily scored 3-0, however Ancelotti sucks when opponents play possession ball, he got destroyed vs Barcelona multiple times, destroyed against City and many more times during these past 2 seasons. Zidane with this current Real team would have won these last 2 UCLs without any big issue. (Zidane's matches against City in 2020 were much closer despite having a much worse team, and was 1 goal away from the 2021 final despite having 69 injuries and basically played with his reserves in UCL knockouts) Well played City, they deserve the UCL this year

Not always. Managers like Hansi Flick and Zidane could have burried this Man City team without any big issue. It's just Ancelotti always struggles against possession because he does not train to have possession on his own team for periods of time. Zidane's Madrid did know to play possession and counter attacking football and could easily switch between those, same as Hansi's Bayern, Ancelotti on the other hand got destroyed multiple times in a row by the worst Barca squad in history, a team which Zidane didn't let them win once for years, including times they had Messi and Suarez in their team.

The first half of this match reminded me a lot of the Barcelona vs Madrid game back in 2010 where Barca thrashed them 5-0. That first half by City was just something else. Like I have constantly said for years now, Pep is the GOAT of managers. Tactically, the man is light years above the rest. Present and future managers will study Pep's work and use it as a blueprint. Football will remember Pep fondly. He's undeniably the GOAT.

The growth of Stones is simply amazing. And When Pep says Bernardo Silva is the best in the world at what he does ( pressing players n closing spaces with just few movements) he wasn't lying. That guy could go days just giving a 100 percent everytime. Alvarez just shows that he can literally start for most teams out there with how clinical he is and how good he is defensively too , Soo much room for growth. Then we get to Kyle walker. I don't know what ancelotti was thinking leaving an attacking midfielder (modric) and a wing back as the defence in real's back left, with the occasional help from another midfielder (kroos), 1-2 midfielders and a wingback can't solo defend man city down the side and were always outnumbered on that side or when cutting inside from it by at least 1 if not 2 players. And taking off modric for rudiger when losing by 2 goals???

When Madrid fans said they’re gonna defend deep and hit on counter against city, I knew it was more of a disadvantage for their team. I’ve seen several teams do this against City but they end up suffering so bad. Trying to hit on counters against City might be a nightmare as City’s defence has become stronger than ever as everyone tracks back anytime we lose the ball. City also fight really hard to win the ball back in dangerous possessions as we saw that in the 4th goal. I’m so glad pep learnt from his previous errors and turned city into a beast💙💙

@@DrakeDHDerr tbf mate we were good at dealing with counter attacks last season too s real madrid, the only issue was Fernandinho (bless him) wasn't ready for Vinicius but walker dealt with him perfectly. What was the real difference this time, was our confidence on the ball and not making or inviting any mistakes, we seemed so level-headed where that cost us last season; Real Madrid flourish vs teams that struggle with the pressure and force them into loads of mistakes... the main reason we won today was because the players were ready, mentally prepared. Pep mentioned this too and as mentioned in this video, city's risky and confident tactical approach was a result of this. A calm, unfazed mentality, which we also saw from coming back from a goal down at the Bernabeu, is what we're gonna need in the final.

It’s just only coming together. This was a project in the making. I can’t imagine how many hours of drills most likely went into this, from the formation, movement and drilling scenarios into his players head for them to notice even the slightest changes to the oppositions shape. You obviously need to have players with high IQ like KDB, Gunda and Silva in order to facilitate this but as FMS pointed out even with lesser competent players like Akanji and Walker once you drill these guys long enough, games become like templates and all they need to do is remember what was drilled in training to react. I feel like one of the keys to city's attack was the way the handled passing, normally city utilizes quick one touch passesmoving the ball back and forth left to right etc, in this game i saw city holding onto the ball just for a few miliseconds, they knew that Madrid was trying to anticipate passing lanes and saw them trying to jump into the lanes to cut off or steal the ball for potential counter attacks. By holding onto the ball for those extra miliseconds caused Madrid players to make their moves and when city didn't pass at that moment caused Madrid players to be completely out of position to defend. This opened up huge amounts of space for city players to dribble forward with the ball exploiting the open space for those more dangerous passes into the box or on the wings. You could clearly see Benardo or Kevin running forward with the ball forcing Madrid defenders to move forward to try and stop these runs. Karim and Vinicius weren't always having the time to come back after their anticipated passing lanes couldn't be exploited. These vacuums in pitch space were the difference today for sure.

They werent much more dominant than last season's tie. The differences were: 1. City's personnel in rest-defence make them stronger on transitions 2. Relying on variance to save you when getting dominated by definition doesnt work most of the time. Banking on stormtrooper aim from the opponents and hitting the jackpot by scoring 3 goals from 1xg of chances isnt sustainable no matter how good your players are, and that it sometimes bounces that way for a few games in a cup run is neither unique to Real Madrid, nor is it some secret brilliant plan you have control over.

Even though on paper City is much better than Inter, i wouldn't be surprised if the match is very tight or even goes to extra time. Real Madrid is not strong in any way this season, most of the key players out of form, lost their balance with letting Casemiro go, they play without a CDM and a natural left back. If anything the clasicos showed that Ancelotti as a coach is clueless against possession based teams, individual players got the results they needed last year but they couldn't perform this year. In the first leg City showed lots of vulnerabilities, the match could have easily gotten 3-0 for Real, in the second leg they dominated but a totally disorganized RM team who didn't even try to run allowe that, Inter will play Mourinho's football in the final and it will be difficult to break that with possession football only.

Pep actually found another "meta" formation in football with this 3-2-4-1. He tried different combinations in the last few years when he had Cancelo and Walker as LB RB going into the center of the midfield essentially making them inverted full backs playing as defensive midfielders. I think he always loved playing with 3 at the back but never had such polyvalent players like Akanji, Ake or Stones who play as CB, CDM or LWB perfectly. But in 2023 we saw that this formation was his go to most of the time. And it really shows his vision and impact on the players. I think everyone thought that Akanji was an ok CB at BVB but for sure not an world class player, people thought that Stones will always be a bench player for Dias or Laporte and Ake was just a rotation option. Can't wait to see what he will do next. He will be if he isn't already the best manager to grace the game.

Man City is unmatched in the football world right now. Vinicius has contributed the most to Real's run in the champions league, but unfortunately for them, City had the perfect counter for Vini. Walker did exceptionally well and his pace and physicality were too much for Vini to create any scoring chances. Pep learned a lot from the first leg and tweaked his tactics to perfection in order to dismantle Madrid. Overall, it was a great day in the office for City.

Vini has always played against 2-3 opponents, and when he has an invisible teammate in Benzema it's obvious he will not be able to break the defence on his own, not even players like Mess and CR7 in their prime could have done it consistently. Real Madrid had Valverde, Benzema, Modric, Carvajal, Mendy, Maguire Militao all out of form this season and they paid the price, should have been knocked out much earlier though.

Perhaps the most important take away for real is how exposed their core of aging players: modric, kroos, and benzema. They were also off the ball 3/4 of the time, and the few touches benzema got were exceedingly sloppy. End of an era for sure, but with city’s pace, it’s time to start players like asensio and tchouameni. I love modric but I think his time has come

IMO there's not so much 'wrong' with Madrid in this match. They're just overrated. Their form had been shocking in La Liga and the reason they won last year just because Benzema and Courtois was like super clutch. The media hyped Real so much as 'England Killers' without taking context that the team they face like Liverpool and Chelsea were bad this year that even mid table teams could beat them quite easily and they actually lost in chances created in every single one of them last year. The narrative was this is a close match or something, while the reality City is just far too good for them and it shows when Benzema, Rodrygo, or Valverde couldn't score outbox bangers, they're Real-ly screwed. I admit i even was taken by the hype that i predicted it would be 50-50 chance. It seems i was wrong. 😅😅😅. I'm an Inter fan and i hope we will win this year. I think we only have like 25% chance to win and given our form, it could be 30-35%. Anyways if City win, it'll be alright as well.

The tactic was simple: Overload the last third of the oppo in the middle, two wingers playing wide and quick switch from attack ti defense by two main midfielders. Simple. The fact that technically City had one defender but everytime they lost possession Walker would quickly move back together with stones and Rodry means that City are hard to score against .

@@draoicht22 Actually, Ancelotti's tactical plan was based on containing Haaland but then Pep had a completely different idea. Pep basically used Haaland as a decoy to create space for City's wingers. Haaland's presence in the centre attracted a lot of attention from Madrid's players and they over-compensated to try and nullify Haaland. So as a result of the over-compensation, Madrid left acres of space which other City players exploited.

Great tactical analysis as always - the extra man from wide areas and the KDB dropping from the press were great moves by Pep - but more than anything City dominated because their wingers work their asses off the full length of the pitch and RM wingers did not put in the work required. Also, I was feeling soooo happy when I saw Rudiger was dropped for Militao - if Carlo just wanted to sit on the counter the rumored lineup should have been used with Carvajal-Militao-Rudiger-Alaba and keep Rodrygo on the bench, all City fans would have PSTD moment when Rodrygo came on late as super sub.

How Pep Guardiola managed to destroy Real Madrid's midfield. The keys? Stone's role. And Rodri. In the defensive phase, Stones was another centre-back, forming a line of 4. But in the offensive phase, Stones was close to Rodri's position, acting as a double pivot. Thus, Rodri was released and could mobilize and have more freedom to play. In turn, when Stones went up, the City centre-backs had up to 6 options for the first pass: there was always someone free. It was a 3-6-1 in the offensive phase, which allowed City to always have superiority in midfield. Rodri was the footballer who made the most passes (113) and the one who covered the field the most (12 km). Masterclass Pep.

But Bernardo and grealish couldn't deliver it and had no support from their full backs. And of course Akanji and Walker are not good moving the ball, or making runs. It was obvious even before the game that, Madrid had to play with 3 central defenders Alaba, Rudiger and Militao. Wingbacks Camavingwa and Carvajal. Ancelotti picked the wrong starting XI. He picked Alaba, and Kroos signifying that he believed they could be effective in possession. He treated the home leg the same as the away leg. Big mistake. I would've elected for Valverde at RW in place of Rodrygo, Camavinga and Tchouameni in midfield alongside Modric, and a back four of Alaba, Rudiger, Militao, Carvajal. The priority should've been to suffocate, or physically overwhelm City to make them uncomfortable. City tend to overrun their opposition in the opening thirty minutes. Once the crowd were settled, and the nerves calmed, then it would be appropriate early in the second half(60th minute) to bring in the likes of Kroos, and Rodrygo to turn the tide of the fixture. Tactically, it's hard to fault Ancelotti. It's easy for us to see these tactical buildups from an online chalkboard. That being said, the minute he saw City playing with a back two of Dias and Akanji/Walker, he should've conceded them possession and dropped Benzema into the midfield to block passes to the more dangerous players. This would force Dias or Walker/Akanji to either play it long, which isn't their specialty(and even if they played a decent ball, you have to trust athleticism of Militao and Rudiger to clear the ball), or they would have to carry the ball forward. This would play into Madrid's hand. If you force Akanji or Walker to carry the ball deep into the opposition half, it takes them away from a possible counter. At that point, when say, Walker dribbles it into crossing range, I would've prioritized having Vinicius Jr stay on the halfway line to expose a direct weakness when the ball is recovered. Walker was the only player capable of flustering Vini. If he's been forced up the pitch, it negates his strengths, while forcing him to be a playmaker, which is his biggest weakness. If done successfully, this would've either provided consistent outlets when the ball was won, or force Guardiola to stay in a back three, and thus mitigate the amount of players offered in buildup play. Of course, this means allowing a player potentially free to cross the ball into the box, but you need to trust Rudiger and Militao to deal with that threat. You can't take everything away from City, so you must concede possession to the least dangerous players. There's more I could say, but this would've been my game plan for the first half. Once Madrid settled into the match, then you bring in the technical maestros against tired legs. Ancelotti's belief that his side could technically compete with City initially cost him the match. He should've elected for better legs, and more industry to fluster them, and to take the crowd out of the match.

Real Madrid tend to concede a lot of goals through headers (2 headed goals at Etihad last year, among many others throughout the season) Both of Real's CBs are short players who are very weak in Aerial duels, it is a no brainer to start Militao who alongside aerials he has very bad positioning against tall and fast players like Haaland. The game was lost the second he benched Rudiger.
