having the full backs not running on the wing till the other side of the pitch makes them not that tired and keeping them in this zone helps the team to protect against counter-attacks - because usually the full backs are the fastest defenders.

Garbage, he just spends a lot of money and buys big. If he was genius he would take Burnley or Wolves or somesuch to the top of the premier league for a couple of seasons back to back. Man City aren't exactly a small team are they, neither were Bayern Munich and neither were Barcelona. And before you start throwing a word like Genius around, for crying out loud, it's kicking a ball around. Genius is Sir Isaac Newton or Leonardo Da Vinci, Please don't compare an idiot like Guardiola to those men.

@@vewayy yeah, it takes a special kind of someone to get Grealish playing as bad as he was last season then try and take the credit when he gets back to playing something like he was before Pep tried to ruin him. Pep inherits great teams. He's never changed the fortunes of any team he has managed. Barcelona, Bayern and Man City were all succeeding before he arrived, he just maintains success at a high financial cost.

The short passing also enables them to press fast and agressive when they lose the ball as there is loads of City players present in the area already, from the short passing, this disarms the opponent counter attack. The players always have to be aware; if I lose the ball here, am I covered? It is the defense's job to deliver the ball, to the attackers, in the final third, so that they can do their magic. From this point on they are free from positional play. Another mechanisme to disable counters is that the first thought is to always pass deep forward towards the 9 this will lead to more players behind the ball and thus is safer. The initial 433 diamond (transitioned into 343 diamond) explained by Cruyff to play with 3 in the mid as opposed to 4231, is implemented in order to have those 3 men behid the ball (Amongst many other reasons). in that sense, the system is fairly defensive. Disabling defenses by freeing up a player(with ball) in the zone between their attackers and defence is spot on deadly and can best done with two strikers creating an almost mano a mano lst vs lcb, rst vs rcb with a cm almost freely to play in the . This is the diamond in Barça system, where they dance around with. The intire Barça system consits of playing in the third zones, thus horizontal and vertical.

@@pytergomes6321 The only thing I didn't like about FM20 is that central play was pretty much non-existent. I remember trying a 4-2-3-1 in Barcelona with Messi obviously playing as the AMC. It was like my midfielders didn't know they could find the best player of all time in loads of space with a simple pass in between the lines and just kept passing the ball around until they got to the wide regions which really pissed me off. Ultimately, I had to move Messi to the RW and only use the wider regions and rely on their quality (which I hate). That led to Messi scoring less than he should but assisting a little bit more.

@@pytergomes6321 I read on their page that they have completely reworked central play in FM21. There are now more interceptions, more fluidity in the players off the ball movement, more fluidity in ball movement, and better animations. Goalkeepers are also more intelligent, meaning that based on how high their decisions stats are (I think) they'll know when they should go to the ground or stay put. Based on what I've read, all of us who love playing through the middle were given our gift.

I think if I start mentioning Horizontal & Vertical Zones to my players they will get confuse. For me in any formation you need to have an attacking and defensive shape. I always say to my players when in possession you are out of position lose possession get back in position. When attacking have the units together is nothing new, but by having them close if you lose the ball you don't have far to run to press and win the ball back. I see what you mean about the zone as a coach possession is all about angles and distance and looking of playing the ball between the lines. Lets no for get the possession game is nothing new. Liverpool in the 80's were a great passing side along with Forrest. Also you can only play in a certain way or system depending on the players in your squad.

@@gandoulawajdi7155 you are wrong. Pep does not buy players with tactical awareness, he however buys young technical players. The tactical part is where Pep's coaching comes into play. He improves players tactically as well as technically. Look at sterling. Before Pep arrived Sterling was average both in technical and tactical terms. He was just fast. Look at him now. Players like Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva, mahrez have all improved tactically. Also Aguero has added more to his arsenal. Under Pep, he frequently plays a false 9 that drops deep to link up with the midfield an improvement from when he was under Mancini and Pelligrini where he was just a traditional center forward. Fernandinho at 35 years is still playing good and ina demanding system of Guardiola. Not only that, but he has been shifted from his preferred Cdm role to Center back and he has do ne well. That is all down to Pep's coaching.

1:15 - In hockey (or "ice hockey" as you might call it) this is called "cycling". You make passes intended to make the defence follow and isolate one player or create a lane for a slapshot from the point. The difference from football being thatt the walls are live (no out of bounds, bouncing passes off the walls) and physical contact (hitting, checking) is normal play.

Pep's build-up is more about creating chances by using the full width of the pitch and the use of half spaces as he mentioned in the video. It is more organized by assigning each player a task as he always has 5 players to attack and 5 players to defend much like a W-M formation Sarri on the other hand, tries to create overloads on one side and build the attack up with short passing combinations. The main player in his buildup being the regista or Deep lying playmaker (jorginho or pjanic). Everything in the buildup happens thru this player. To create chances his teams rely on third man runs. Overall, pep has a wider approach to the buildup which does not depend on any particular player. Sarri on the other hand has narrower approach and his buildup revolves around the Deep lying play maker

Under Arteta first game as Arsenal manager from his move away from Pep; I noticed how wide he kept his wingers, literally a foot from the sidelines! Players were positioned closer together but in a way that they were supposed to be there (in their assigned area/boxes) which created more accurate passes and possessions. I also noticed he pressed with a 3-2, with Saka & Nile pushing up and Torreira or Xhaka dropping back at times. In result, Saka had many chances but unfortunately failed to deliver decent crosses. Also he uses Ozil in that half boxes/area btw the midfield and defenders, which allowed Ozil to create several chances. With that system, Bournemouth were unable to freely press, bc Arsenal fullbacks/wingers were stretching their fullbacks out, the midfield were compacted, but unfortunately the lack of world class central defenders at Arsenal is very troubling and cannot be fixed unless reinforcements can be brought. All to say, it’s evident that Arteta is developing a similar tactic at Arsenal, which will take a couple of months if not a season or two, and once he find the right players in the market or at the club, then he can fully transform the club. #COYG

That's what I see in a Manager , what he offers to football . I'm okay to Mention Pep as a Great Manager even if he doesn't win anything at all . Reason I call Bielsa a Great Manager as well regardless of the Trophies they've won . Master of Transitions & Player understandings.

Here should be also explained, that having the wingers wide creates more chances in 1:1 play. This is the difference to other teams who use full backs to create width. Everyone will agree that Sterling or Sane would be much better in 1:1 than Walker and the other full back. So with having KDB City can easily transfer the ball from one wing to the other and hence utilize the above.. Plus, having the full backs not running on the wing till the other side of the pitch makes them not that tired and keeping them in this zone helps the team to protect against counter-attacks - because usually the full backs are the fastest defenders.

The way Silva Find his half space or through balls and Kevin running in the wing and get the ball from Barnardo is the most effective and it always turn out to be a Goal.

It is not possible to respect max-two-players-vertically rule in every circumstance. Players' distribution over zones is not the same when the ball is in central and far right zone. So, if ball is far right, then far left zone will be left with only one player - > one other zone with three. Is there any content suggesting this? I haven't found it at Spielverlagerung.

Didn't this pitch framework and positional play come from Michels & Cruyff from which Pep learnt when he played under Cruyff?

As a Wiseman once said "it's not about the X's and O's; it's about the Lennys and Joes... Pep has also had some of the most talented players in football playing in this system and I think that makes the biggest difference in the long run
