Percy Julian grew up to be a pioneer in the field of chemistry despite the many racial barriers he encountered along the way.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

This man is my favorite scientist! He is singlehandedly responsible for ushering in the modern era of pharmaceutical synthesis that we benefit from currently. Before his work, pain medication was expensive, used extremely addictive agents, and was only accessible to the wealthy. When I taught high school chemistry I had this arrogant black student, senior, star quarterback. He did nothing but smart off and bitch about assignments, failed every test, and wound up with like a 48% at the end of the year. His mom flipped out to the principal and he basically gave me the choice between the pink slip or giving the kid some kind of assignment worth the 12% overall grade, so he could graduate. So I told him to research Percy Julian and give me a 5-page biography on him. He not only did a decent paper, he thanked me for introducing him to the chemist's story.

I'll never understand these parents. I have a son with autism. I'm in his face everyday about doing his work in class and getting him to complete his homework. My son is profoundly disabled. If my son has an "autistic flare up" at school, I'm told about it right away and brought into the principles office. In your story, the parent had a star quarterback son that failed and at the end of the school year she shows up to bitch to the principal? Really! I have 0 sympathy for parents of typically developing children that can't do the minimum when I work my ass off 24/7 just so my child can be around these losers.

@@christschool Well that was my first year teaching, and parents like that (and principals like that) were major factors in why I only lasted 4 years. I saw an amazingly poignant comic strip (of all things) during that time. In the first cell, titled "Then", a teacher and two parents are facing a kid, saying "Explain these grades!" and the second cell, "Now," had the parents and kid facing the teacher saying, "Explain these grades!" Meanwhile you've got administrators constantly pressuring you to implement "academic rigor" to get kids to test well, but when you try to hold them to account for their performance (never mind their behavior), they don't back you up. I can't even call the job "hard"; it's literally undoable. And that's why almost no teachers stay more than 5 years now.

Bola Olagunju I mean, look at the native Americans, Spanish people came over and was like, "aye is this India?" and the natives were like, "no wtf is that?" and the Spanish were like, "so you're not indians?" and the natives were like, "no bro but welcome." then the Spanish were like, "mehhh you're indians. but uhh we'll be back with some white people" then the white people showed up and were like, "yep, we like it here so we're just gonna kill all you guys and isolate you into tiny areas and just take shit over" which they did and now the natives have to sit there on thier tiny little pieces of land and watch EVERYONE enjoy what belonged to them in the first place.

Where is this happening? Are their laws that prevent people opportunity? Names these and lets fight them!
@yellowonesdontstop
@yellowonesdontstop 3 жыл бұрын
@@Theozzie11 It's more complicated now. Civil Rights legislation has abolished laws that explicitly mention race; however, the legacy of racist practices like redlining, which kept People of Color who lived in those neighborhoods from building wealth (and in many cases caused them to lose wealth as their property values declined), and current practices that have disproportionate racial impact like policing, our criminal justice system, credit scoring, funding methods for public schools, "old boys" networks for hiring and access to investor capital, etc. create extra barriers for Black people and other People of Color to fully realize their potential. No one would have blamed Percy Julian if he had gotten fed up at DePauw and decided to live out his life in a steady union job on a Ford factory line. No one knows how many Black businesses never got off the ground because someone couldn't get start-up funds or a venture capital firm wasn't willing to finance years of losses (like for Uber, Facebook, Amazon, etc).

@@yellowonesdontstop dude if you dont have something/ someone specific we can fight against then who are we fighting? All white people? Is their racism in NBA, NFL? If not there then why would there be racism in every other aspect of capitalist culture?

I didn't mean to imply that black people can't be light-skinned without recent white ancestors, more that the two actors were really far apart in color. I suppose saying he became light-skinned would be more accurate
@garrusn7702
@garrusn7702 7 жыл бұрын
Bri Elli He really doesn't look like a west African without any recent white ancestry. Black Americans have a somewhat skewed perception of what a fully African person looks like. Sure, there are some Berber people, maybe some Sudanese or Ethiopian people too, who look a little more light skinned, kind of like Keye and Peele. But most of the "light skinned" people in the USA, are just part white. If you go to the ancestral homeland of black Americans (Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Mali. . .) you'll see that they look very different from African Americans.
