The fourth installment in the beloved “Toy Story” franchise achieves a level of detail and realism unseen in any Disney/Pixar project yet. See how it all came to life at the legendary Pixar studios, step by step: beginning with the story and artwork stage, onto 3D computer modeling, shading and surfacing, layout, voice acting, character animation, simulation, lighting, effects, scoring, sound mixing, and the final render.
The first “Toy Story” film was a pioneer in computer-generated animation back in 1995, as the first full-length feature to be completely CG-animated. In the last 25 years, the evolution of Pixar technology has allowed for an unprecedented standard of natural-world CGI in “Toy Story 4,” topping the already impressive undertakings in “Toy Story 2” (1999) and “Toy Story 3” (2010). So how exactly did Pixar raise the bar for animation once more for this year’s sequel? INSIDER takes you behind the filmmaking process for “Toy Story 4,” illustrating each stage in the production pipeline. We show how the characters and their environments were designed, modeled and built, and how Pixar’s technical artists created visual textures that appear so vivid and lifelike on the big screen. Plus, we explain which parts of the movie were animated by hand - and which parts were simulated using advanced computer software that models the appearance of clothing, weather, hair, and fur.
The Josh Cooley-directed film features recurring stars Tom Hanks (as Sheriff Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Annie Potts (Bo Peep), and Joan Cusack (Jessie). Also returning are John Ratzenberge as the piggy bank Hamm and Wallace Shawn as the tyrannosaurus Rex; Pixar even pieced together existing audio from the late Don Rickles for the voice of Mr. Potato Head. Joining the performers to voice the new characters of “Toy Story 4” are a number of big-name cast additions, including Keanu Reeves (as Duke Caboom), Elizabeth Hendricks (Gabby Gabby), Keegan-Michael Key (Ducky), Jordan Peele (Bunny), Tony Hale (Forky), and Giggle McDimples (Ally Maki). Other notable cast members and celebrity cameos include the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea (as Duke Caboom’s announcer), comedian and “Barry” star Bill Hader (Axel the Carnie), Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette (as Harmony’s mother), Jay Hernandez (Bonnie’s dad), Laurie Metcalf (Andy’s mom), Emily Davis (Billy, Goat, and Gruff); Bonnie Hunt (Dolly), Carl Weathers (the Combat Carls), Carol Burnett (Chairol Burnett), Betty White (Bitey White), Mel Brooks (Melephant Brooks), Timothy Dalton (Mr. Pricklepants), Kristen Schaal (Trixie the Triceratops), Steve Purcell (the Bensons), June Squibb (Margaret), and Carl Reiner (Carl Reineroceros).
This star-studded lineup of skilled voice actors help to bring the sweet plot and grown-up themes of “Toy Story 4” to life. Their performances, combined with the strikingly naturalistic quality of the animation, has earned the film a strong box-office debut - along with rave reviews from critics (with a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and even early Oscar buzz for the Best Animated Film category.

Now we know why all of these movies take so long to come out, people need to stop taking it for granted. Some of the actors from the original films are all dead now such as Don Rickles (Mr Potato Head) R. Lee Ermey (Sarge) and Jim Varney (original Slinky).

It looks hard because it's mega detailed but it's not like we animators make the hair and fur of the characters, that's just a layer that we put to the main "skeleton" and we can change it very easily. If Pixar wanted they could make the first toy story movie look like the 4th one in one or two months. It's all just layers made with programs

@gameoperation5239
@gameoperation5239 4 жыл бұрын
The animation is not easy to make. Despite them having to set the models and creating a 3D mesh. They still need to animate frame by frame. (Usually, Animators work in 24 fps) Meaning they have to adjust each frame. Think of it like this. there are 24 frames in 1 second (if it is 24 fps video). So that would be 24 pictures to adjust, or to take care of to create 1 second of animation :) In the old Disney days, they had to draw each frame by hand (watch the making of snow-white, you will be surprised). So you can imagine the struggle. Nowadays they create a 3D model of the character, that can be then easily manipulated or changed to create poses and expressions in the character. Still the shading part and lightning part and to create each and everything according to the scene is a disaster. Animated movies are waaayyy harder to make than normal movies.

imagine crediting the voice actors for carrying this movie. the hardwork put by artists and animators imo have far more credit to animated movies than the people voicing them, I mean the voice was already pre-recorded for them

Alright im just gonna say this voice acting is difficult to do y’all gotta credit them to no need to shame them for doing a good job and trust me I can give you great examples of bad voice acting in could have been good movies that ruined it. I say that a lot of more time is put into animation and it did look great as in end result . I say the movie was carried by the whole team not just one specific group I cant say the same for *some* movies though 👀.

Even the filmmakers said they pay attention to every single detail in their movies to make sure they get them right even though they only appear in the movie for a few seconds.

It's crazy to see just how much detail they went into for this movie. I mean like things that people wouldn't really care about or even notice but I'd be the same way if I was working on it because I'm a borderline perfectionist and would keep thinking that everyone who is watching it is looking for details like this, especially on a big screen where it's much easier to pick out the details in movies. But they really did such a great job on this and all of their other movies as well. I mean, you can see why they are well liked and well loved. Awesome job guys, girls and all the rest who helps bring these incredible movies to life.

The medium has grown a lot in a relatively short amount of time. For reference, it took Walt Disney studios 44 years to release the same amount of films that Pixar has in nearly half the time. And most importantly, they've remained competitive. Other than Cars 2, there's nothing of theirs that seems phoned in and they always respect the intelligence of their audience....even if they are children. Honestly, as a kid who grew up in the Disney Renaissance era, I say kids today have it way better than we did. Disney was the only game in town for us 90s kids and everyone else copied them. Nowadays, there's Pixar, DreamWorks, and illumination (ugh) that all have distinct styles but have all elevated the writing and storytelling expected of kids movies.

I’m happy that he met up with bow peep but I wish the whole gang would have stayed together, but in the end woody was happier and knew he wanted to stay. It may be a ton to ask but I hope the crew animates a scene where they all meet up again. I’m not saying another movie maybe just 30 secs long just to see what has happened between the possible time gap they meet up in. I don’t mean this to offend anyone or give hate on anyone I really enjoyed the movie.

I'm so mad its detailed but I'm so proud of the animators and staff who paid attention to detail. I support them and their hard work. It's amazing how much they changed in over 20 years.

You can say what you want about the movie disney etc but the attention to details pixar puts in their movies is crazy. Even with the limited technology back in the days they managed to put out well rounded moives that were amazing and lovable
