How Poaching and Wildlife Trafficking Works | Wildlife Trade Explained | Gambling on Extinction | Busines Documentary from 2015
Unscrupulous investors, speculating on the disappearance of rare animals, and increased demand for animal products from Asia are pushing endangered animals into extinction.
Worldwide, the illegal trade in endangered animals is booming. No longer just the work of individuals or small gangs, it is now dominated by well-organized and equipped international cartels. Wildlife poaching has become the most lucrative illegal business, after the trade in drugs and weapons, with an annual turnover of an estimated twenty billion dollars.
At the current rate of poaching, elephants, rhinos and tigers living in the wild will be extinct in our lifetime. Who are the global players in this deadly game of power, greed and profit? Who pulls the strings and who are the customers? And why have ivory and rhino horn become perfect investment opportunities? We answer these questions in this documentary.

If you go by that argument (farm the rhino for horn), then next thing you know Rhinos can only be found in zoo or enclosures.

They already FARM lions and tigers in Africa to ship body parts to ASIA and to release the big cats so they can be shot by trophy hunters. Nobody in south Africa is doing anything about the big cat farms there.

That just drives the price up for the people still looking to buy, thereby making it even more profitable for people to replace the ones you just killed. You clearly don't understand the issue.

That female undercover rhino horn investigator sure looked and sounded like a man with a wig on. Must be pretty dangerous to try and buy these rare animal horns and skin's. This is revolting, especially knowing the animal was alive while they hacked off the horns so ruthlessly. The man who shot the poacher who didn't feel bad, is used to seeing these animal's brutally killed for a horn, not even for food, guess i see his point. God bless everyone.

John is a business man in my view, his only in this for the money he might make once its legalised. To protect his animals or better yet his investment, he regularly harvests the rhino horns and stock piles them in a safety volt to one day be able to make millions once its legalised. his only concerned about the bottom line that's why his angry at people who oppose legalisation, they are hurting his pockets. its the same business tactic previously used in the US where companies invested tonnes of money at weed research before it was even legalised.

it is high time we did approach this issue from another perspective as we should ask ourselves where do these poachers get guns from?🤔 probably from the illegal arms trade. so then illegal arms trade and poaching go hand in hand, address one, you would solve the other. For my country Kenya, those in power are so ignorant 🤔and don't have ideas. like an investment for mandatory X-RAY MACHINE CHECKS OF CARGO at our international customs borders, would solve the transportation of ivory from our neighbouring countries via our port of Mombasa. Also, the imposition of hefty laws and regulations on those found poaching and trafficking would work like a life sentence or even death. it is such a shame these majestic creatures might go extinct, with much of the African population never physically setting eyes on them, only on tv programmes and documentaries. we need to put an end to this.🤧😧😭😢😈. Africa we should find an alternative to employ our youths and sensitize them about, the importance of our wildlife, create jobs through sustainable industrialization and let's put an end to CORRUPTION (CHEAP HANDOUTS).😭

AFTER watching this I have to agree with the farmer if you made ivory sales legal from farmers and breeders you could bottom out the black market price why pay for illegal when you can buy legal and at a much lower price only way to stop poaching.

Our you can further stimulate demand , combined with the fact that it will still be cheaper to illegally kill a Rhino than to Breed one this looks like a disaster in making. Countries where wildlife farming is legal-China, Vietnam there is an increase in illegal wildlife trade.
