+the gourd king pumpkin my family is in poverty but the only way I can still get Internet and all that is if my family pushes back bills until we have too many to take care of and go to food banks and work more than normal. I can still get internet but there are some disadvantages to keep on having these things. I don't even have money saved up for me for college because my family used all of it to keep us from not having a home and all that.

Why do people act like having privilege is a bad thing?
@nolongerjuicyboiz4413
@nolongerjuicyboiz4413 6 жыл бұрын
Because it's used as a way to invalidate what you say, invalidate your experiences, and invalidate how much you are struggling in whatever aspect. It can be just rude. If I go up to a gay guy living in Indonesia, and say he is privileged because he is male, that's just rude, because most likely, that 'privilege' won't help him from being stoned to death for being gay- i'm acting like the fact he's male means he's "privileged", and that word entails assumptions like he has an easy life, when he does not in fact have an easier life than a black trans gay muslim whatever living in America.

I was born in a fairly rich neighborhood in the largest state of the most highly developed country in the world to an upper-middle class family with good social standings and lots of connections. I had and still have access to running water, electricity, the Internet, public transportation, more food than I can possibly eat, and every single source of knowledge in the world. However, since I am a gay, non-white female who works as a barista, I scored a 37/100. 10/10 would take again 💯

Dont have colege loans +1. For my country is normal to NOT take loadns for school or university. got a job ... +1. Never been homeless ... +.1 I don’t rely on public transportation. well i dont, from end of the city to the outher walking 45min. I live in the middle of the city 10 min walking to everywhere wtf i will need public transportation? But doesnt matter +1. ''I have had an unpaid internship.'' I have had multiple unpaid internships.'' and this is the same question ... and i dont get wtf this is privilege to work for no money? but doesnt matter +2. I graduated high school. +1 yey the great privilege to finish high school, you are not lazy so you are privilege.'' I graduated college''. the same''My parents are heterosexual.''My parents are both alive.''My parents are still married.'' 3 more nonsence +3 points. Privilege becouse my parents are alive. +23 from noncense. and there are more just cant take that joke anymore.

the unpaid internship is a privilege because you are able to spend time working without receiving money and are working towards a wanted career. People who have less money are not able to take an internship like this because if they didn't work for money as often as often as possible (multiple jobs), they would be homeless or have no food, heat, electricity etc. To not have to worry about finances enough to be able to take an unpaid job for the experience of it is definitely a privilege.

@First Last Thank you, for giving me these examples. I've never heard about the first thing before, but I looked it up and found out, that it is a regular occurrence from some judges to decide like that. This surprised me, but I know too little about it to really discuss this. And the other topic also seems quite complicated so I won't get into it. Thanks again for these examples.

Pretty privilege is most definitely a thing. Use ex con Jeremy Meeks as an example. He went to prison and his mugshot went viral. He made a lot of money, was cast in movies, and became a model because he was an attractive felon. Don't tell me that would happen to someone who was average looking.

I don't have any problem with privilege as a concept, but videos like this one make me mad, and not because I'm racist or stuff. I feel as though it undermines all the hard work i pushed through, all the hardship I endured and all the grief I've felt. I know im somewhat privileged and i know that's good for me. I just feel undermined, reduced to my gender, my looks, my sexual orientation. That makes me mad, rightfully so.

Personally, I think the whole "privilege" thing is being taken too far. I'm never going to be embarrassed because I'm a white male who grew up in a nice family. Though I realize people have it harder than me in certain aspects of their lives, I think THAT'S what should be focused on: helping their needs instead of bashing "privileged" folks. It seems like we've spent so much time convincing people that we're accepting of everyone that we've gone full circle and started ostracizing those who have always been accepted simply because we've "had it easy". Now, obviously, white straight people have, well... had it easy in specific aspects of our lives. But that makes up a noticeably small portion of our lives. We're not completely different people bc our ethnicity and sexual preference is considered more "normal" than someone else's, This kind of "calling out" of people isn't beneficial in the effort of bringing us together, and my "privilege" is something I refused to be embarrassed about.

Yeah you shouldn't be ashamed, just aware, and you are and that's good. But being aware also means accepting that you've had an advantage, and you shouldn't be bashed for it. And the fact that you think it's only a small part of your life shows you aren't truly aware. Also the fact that you think it's gone too far, shows your ignorance to a real issue that doesn't affect you.
@ladynoluck
@ladynoluck 8 жыл бұрын
But no one is asking you to be ashamed. They are asking you to be aware of the advantages that you are given by birth and circumstance, which many people don't enjoy. These advantages span from feeling accepted to feeling safe, but many people don't think of those as advantages. They think of them as rights, but they are really privileges. I am white and not poor, so I have never felt unsafe walking through the TSA line, nor have ever worried about people thinking I was committing a crime or a criminal just by looking at me (police, store owners, etc.). I never had to work a service job to feed and shelter myself, and I have had to opportunity to go to college and then go to graduate school. Those are all privileges that I have simply because I'm white and not poor. They are not rights, and they are not accessible options to many people. Ignoring that is why people have been bringing up privilege a lot recently. People are quick to say things like, "Just try harder," "Race doesnt matter," and "You got same-sex marriage, so what more do you need?" Those are privileged statements that ignore the inherent inequalities of not having the privileged majority identities, such as but not limited to the daily fear of harm. You are misconstruing this discussion as an attack on you when it's not that at all. It's an attack on a system that grants people privilege, not based on merit or their own choices, but based on being a certain race, a certain gender identity, a certain sexual orientation, a certain income level, a certain family style, and more. The fact that people are miscontruing the discussion of privilege as an attack on them is what makes having this important discussion unnecessarily difficult. tl;dr : You aren't being asked to be ashamed; just be aware and apply that awareness in helpful ways.

Yes I’ve had a hard life, but I own a phone, I can watch this video, I go to bed warm and now safe. The word “privileged” seems bad to most, but think of it as a thankful scale. Although I didn’t score much I am thankful to God every day that I can even live in this country. We don’t worry about a war happening a few miles away, there’s churches, soup kitchens, and our government that provides food. Gosh, I’m so thankful to be able to even comment on a video. I got a 45/100... I am ranked not privileged at all. And I thought I was, I mean I feel privileged to have a phone to watch KZfaq on, and a house and clean water! I am not trapped in my country, caught in the middle if a war, or being tortured for information by a crazy dictator. I am not being held against my will. My family didn't abandoned me as a baby, and I was born at a time of flourishing technology. I would say I am pretty privileged, how about you. Just because I am of my middle-eastern background doesn't mean I am not privileged, It just means more rude, arrogant people might use that as an excuse to make them feel better about themselves; instead of just going along their day. (Same thing about being a girl)

Yesssss. I'm a "minority with two strikes" (Hispanic and gay), and, while I can't speak for everyone, what irritates me is people who think whites are "out to get them." Racism is found across all nations/ethnicities/cultural backgrounds, and while I have felt discriminated against, I hold THAT person accountable. Not their skin color. There's also a double standard. If a white person doesn't help their fellow man, they're racist. And if they do help, they're being condescending and doing "charity" and people respond cynically.

I took the quiz. "You live with 31 out of 100 points of privilege. You're not privileged at all. You grew up with an intersectional, complicated identity, and life never let you forget it. You've had your fair share of struggles, and you've worked hard to overcome them. We do not live in an ideal world and you had to learn that the hard way. It is not your responsibility to educate those with more advantages than you, but if you decide you want to, go ahead and send them this quiz. Hopefully it will help." I'm white and live in Canada. Maybe privilege has to do with money.

+Sophia Guo That's not the message their sending. The whole idea of privilege just makes minority's groups angry at white males that have done nothing wrong. On top of that, it reinforces the idea to minority's groups that they are worse than the majority, which leads to them not feeling comfortable about who they are. They should be telling everyone to accept who they were born as and to see disadvantages they have as challenges they have to overcome

I got a score of 37 People tell me I'm privileged just because I'm white(but I'm more than half Macedonian), I went to a private school, and my parents have always had a little more money than we needed. That's just what you see on the outside of me. I know there are people that have it worse than me. I do not consider myself more able than anyone else out there. My parents work hard for the money we have. They work so much actually, to the point where I rarely see them on a daily basis. I have three learning disabilities, and I struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I am in the process of finding out if I have Anorexia, OCD, and Schizophrenia. Just because I was born with a color of skin and got a better chance than some doesn't mean I haven't struggled. Just because someone is white and maybe has a little more money than they need doesn't mean they have a "good" life. Please stop looking at people's surfaces and judging them for that, because there's so

People act like its bad that we're "privileged". Life is different, it's okay. It's doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a rich white family and it doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a poor situation pretty much the exact opposite of that one. We all come from different places and all that matters is who we are from there and where we go. There's no way of controlling where you come from so just accept everyone and stop making assumptions of people based on that. Base it on how they are to you and to other people. If someone's kind and a good person to other people and tries to do good that's all that should matter. We should not let life desicions and backgrounds define our image of another human beings. Because in the end we're all just people struggling to be happy and we're all just as deep and whole as another person. It's just some people have a harder struggle than others. And we shouldn't hold that against anybody.
@ZendenKing

Yep! It's definitely no ones fault that they were born into ____ family or _____ sexuality, and we should all embrace ourselves (and each other) for who we are. The problems only arise when people fail to see that privilege exists and some people get it tougher than others. We need to be able to see differences and help each other!

+Vanessa _____ I see what you are saying with how some people work really hard to be successful and get nowhere and how some people don't try at all and become successful. However, my family really worked hard. My great grandfather was a coal miner just making enough to get my grandfather through school. My grandfather became a sheriff and started a scuba diving business. My father worked at that scuba shop, worked throughout college and made his way throughout the ranks in the Air Force. He now flies planes for delta. In three generations my family went from the bottom of the economic scale to the upper middle class. That's why I believe in capitalism so much. It may not be a guarantee to wealth and may not be a quick solution all the time but it served my family well. It makes me believe that if I get a good education and if I work hard, I can become successful and allow my children to become even more successful.
